Well, I was just being facetious, but in that case, I'm with you on that one Keef.

Would you rather have been hit with another charge (and interest) for going overdrawn?

Not quite SE22 but the Gowlett has a pool table

Just out of interest, how many eggs would your chickens have to produce (taking into account set-up costs, organic feed, vet bills etc) before the cost per egg is lower than 25p?

I noticed that the new recycling bins at Sainsburys include a bin marked "cartons" - presumably this will take Tetra Pak. Does anyone know for sure?

If water is part of the management charge and the management charge is his responsibility, he shouldn't be able to charge you for it other than through the rent itself (need to check exactly what the lease says). As for repairs etc, he can only charge you for damage over and above "fair wear and tear". If a mattress needed repairing/replacing, that's probably more than wear and tear (what were you doing to it??? - actually, don't answer that...) Get an itemised list from him of the costs that make up the ?800, assess what would be fair and reasonable (eg replacing the mattress?) and offer that. If he rejects the offer or doesn't respond within a couple of weeks, suggest going through small claims if not resolved within a further reasonable period eg 1 month. But be prepared to go through with it and keep copies of all correspondence/notes of telephone calls. county court likely to be more amenable if you have acted reasonably throughout and if you made a fair offer.

Announcement about the Goose Green fence
peckhamboy replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Trust me, it's not foxes. Size and colour both point towards a dog being responsible. I'm all for there being a separate dog area on Goose Green where they can do what they want and if that means fences that's fine by me. And, like cdonline, I don't have kids myself but would much prefer to have an area that I knew was free of dog mess. Every now again it would be nice to be able to walk somewhere and feel it was safe to look up at my surroundings rather than carefully scanning the floor. -

Well, Paris maybe. Although there are certain areas of ED that give it a damn good run for its money. Unfortunately, I think my morning route has a significant overlap with the daily routine of one of the worst offenders (whose dog seems frequently to be a little poorly) so maybe I've got a bit of a jaundiced view... -

What a load of crap (excuse the pun). In what way is this a "class issue"? Are you trying to suggest that leaving dog mess all over the place is a positive aspect of working class life? I suspect that a large number of people who consider themselves working class would take exception to being portrayed in that way. And whilst I agree that France has a problem with dog mess as well, I'm not convinced that it's any worse than here. Basically, a handful of anti-social and/or lazy dog-owners make the daily walk to work a rather unpleasant obstacle course and I'm not sure why you would want to defend their right to leave mess on the pavements. Maybe if it was on your doorstep every morning you would feel differently. -
Depends where you're coming from.

I have no problem living in a Peckham postcode (not least because I get to live very close to Lordship Lane but only paid SE15 prices for my house), but given that I live about 1/4 of a mile from ED station, and about 1 mile from Peckham Rye, tend to ask for ED when I get a cab home, or describe it as ED when friends come to visit. I started off by being "honest" and calling it peckham but quickly realised it just led to confusion and doubled the taxi fare because cabbies would set off down the Old Kent Rd. People in London define where they live by their nearest station or landmark rather than by postcode. It rarely has anything to do with shame (Maurice excepted). If I lived downhill of the lights on DKH I'd call it ED, uphill is Denmark Hill, anything else is Peckham. Camberwell doesn't have a station so as far as I'm concerned it doesn't really exist apart from a few hundred metres round the junction at Camberwell Green.

Controlled Parking Zone For Dulwich?
peckhamboy replied to cazkid's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I guess the problem with any sort of CPZ is going to be that unless it extends for a sizeable distance from the station it will simply displace the problem. Sure, those who live immediately next to the station may benefit but only at the cost of passing the problem onto their neighbours a couple of streets away. And if the zone extends too far, I doubt it will do much to alleviate the problem - I suspect the problem is not "out of towners" driving in to use the fantastic rail service from ED (there are better services from stations further out than ED) but is more of a local issue, ie people living about 15 mins walk or more from the station simply being lazy and driving down rather than walking or waiting for a bus. So, like extending the congestion zone to include areas like Chelsea has resulted in the city getting clogged up again, those people could end up continuing to drive to the station. And, as someone else pointed out above - visitor and resident passes are only ever available in person from the parking shops which are located in the back of beyond (and the councils seem to take care to ensure they are never near any public transport routes) and open only for about 30 minutes a day. -
Beckenham Place Park is a reasonably well kept municipal course. I think you can get trains from Peckham Rye. Beckenham Place

Mainly of sitting round the corner drinking dodgy cider from 3 litre bottles from the dodgy offie, then drinking dodgy snakebite and black whilst watching dodgy bands. And generally being quite scared of the girls that went there...

First one I can remember the name of was Neds Atomic Dustbin at the Hatfield Forum. Do I get a prize for obscurity?

You'd have thought celestial could easily close for a few days without suffering a dent in their profits, given how few customers ever actually set foot in there. In fact, they might even find it more profitable to close as they wouldn't have to pay staff... Anyway, never mind the power of prayer. Let's harness the power of the forum. Christmas without celestial i could cope with, but Christmas without booze? Unthinkable.

I live just off Grove Vale but it's SE15 so I don't get SE22 magazine. Can't I just walk to Lordship lane? That sounds like an awfully long commute to get my William Rose sausages :)

Isn't that the Deep South?

They are personal company cars for the estate agents so they drive them home at the end of the day.

One for the Consumer Acts lawers amongst you - Xbox for ?33.24?
peckhamboy replied to Mark's topic in The Lounge
Well, you might get an X-box for 30 quid. But basically they are not offering to sell at that price - you are offering to buy at that price, and they don't have to accept. Their terms and conditions say "Our acceptance of an order takes place on despatch of the order, at which point the purchase contract will be made and you will be charged for your order". So if they post it to you and charge you that price, you've got lucky. But more likely, by then someone will notice and correct the price and then contact you to ask if you want to buy at the higher price. Probably worth a try though. It might just slip through the net... (I'm assuming they misquoted the price rather than misdescribing the contents, but the same principles would apply.) -
It would, but might be the lesser of two evils. After all it's only annoying to the one person wanting to start a new thread rather than to everyone on the forum. And only delays the thread by a second (unless you haven't searched first, of course...)
-
When someone posts a new thread, could you have a pop-up box that asks them if they've already searched? They then have to click yes before they can post the thread. Not foolproof of course but may reduce duplication a bit and at least make people consider it before posting.

The Best Bar in East Dulwich 2007 award - discussion

To be fair, I find the EDT is worse for that. -
