I got stung by her once. "Kid were in the cold, husband was at work". Never again! -
Getting slightly off topic - what is it you have against him?

I somehow stumbled on to it and thought it was quite funny.

Is your property on on the market with Foxtons Dulwich? (Lounged)
downsouth replied to maison_d'etre's topic in The Lounge
I wonder how many 'local agents' have registered on the forums to deride Foxtons? "Use local agents". -
I also think visibility of pedestrians for drivers at night time is important but can see the counter argument. There must be a 'policy' somewhere.

Great news - congrats!

ED is becoming less diverse as a result of recent Demog. changes (Lounged)

Has this not died a death? -
No he shouldn't. NR was a novel situation. Although I do think Lloyds should have been allowed to buy the bank early doors which would have quietened the whole situation. We now have another lender (Paragon?) pleading for support from the Government/taxpayer. It's going to get messier as this thing goes on.

Had a mushroom and haloumi burger in All Bar one - very nice. Horses for courses folks. It may mean you don't have to see the 'others' in your preferred watering hole. Win win relaly. -
You cynic you. Until 1959 it was till called th Manchester Guardian and in the US it is still known as that. It cares far more about regionalism than any of the other parties due in part to its founding. We're off topic now.

Gosh, I suppose it was inevitable that some swords would cross but in themain this has been a very mature and senslbily discussed thread. A great example of exploring these issues in a non-confrontational manner. It is all too easy for some characters to be as negative as possible and say things they wouldn't dare say in the 'real' world. Brendan makes a brilliant point regarding cultural similarities. I always find they are emphasised when you go on holiday. Following on from my previous post and what has been put here since ED 'appears' to have less african caribbean (and Turkish when I think of it) infleunces and residents. But that in itself has not led to a lessening of its cutural mix as there is still a significant presence and in addition many new nationalities particularly antipodeans and Eastern Europeans have come to settle here. Much of this is to do with economics - that favourite topic of mine - and little or nothing to do with anything else. -
The Guardian is a mancunian paper.

Superheroes superheroes. One of my passions as a youngster. For me you can't get much better than Jean Grey/Phoenix from the X-Men. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6a/Jeangre.png

ed_pete > with race. Diversity in my book also means age, > sexual orientation, wealth, political leaning etc. I'm a fan of diversity with a small 'd'. It means things are always evolving and ideas cross polinating. For me it also means places feel safer. That is a personal opinion but I would rather somewhere that had a broad brush of people from all the different things you mention and race/culture/nationality would be included. -

Gosh this is an emotive one but one I have been thinking about for a while. Many of my friends grew up in and around the area. When the time came many couldn't afford to buy here and for those who could they preferred to get more bang for their buck in other parts of South East London. I share some of Maurice's opinion on this and agree that the change in the main has been welcome. But there does for some of my friends seem to be this stranger in his own land scenario which I'm sure could be voiced by others in the 1950s thru 1970s and even now in some areas by intolerants. I think the best way to articulate this situation is that some people no longer feel 'welcome' in East Dulwich not necessarily in an overt way but subtely. Yes shops closing down could be one manifestation but that perhaps is overegging the pudding. To be honest many 'black' people don't go to Caribbean restaurants as they or their family will cook a nicer meal and if they are men many won't endure a marathon session at the barber shop. The real issue is that from anecdotal evidence the livery's of LL are not as inviting and hospitable as they once were. Is this simply poor customer service? I'm not sure but with some of the rave reviews I see on here some of my friends who have had very cold experiences would not pay a return visit. So it is not an issue of diversity per se but, as has been mentioned by Sean and others, a shifting demographic which I suppose now sets the tone for the area. So there is an 'issue', even if it is a psychological one. Edited for a typo. -
There is a spectrum that over time shifts. Attitudes in the 40s and 50s would now be deemed offensive. However there are some areas where society as a whole is either not ready or will never be ready/accepting. Unfortunately political correctness is a term that has in recent years been used to describe all efforts at achieving a consensus - laudable but at times fraught with very poor exceptions. There are though absolutes, and racist is racist and prejudice and sexist are just that. The rest is grey and for society through media like this to discuss, debate and keep alive.
