  1. I think you're being somewhat naieve. Do you live in SE24/SE21 or SE27? If you did you would know that there is a clear need for this. As I mentioned this is 0.2% of the park's space. The parcel of land in question currently houses a set of dire toilets and is a meeting point for the local drunks. As a regular user of this park I am for it. What they plan to do to Crystal Palace - now that's another story entirely.
  2. Oh, company lawyer for greedy oil giant that is sucking the life blood out of the planet.
  3. Do you mean, why are we on here?

Becuase of the delays and being late daily I now drive to Brixton. Not only a waste of tax payers money on the widening of wide pavements but also of the inconveience to those trying to get to work.
  5. I've read a bit more and I am wholeheartedly in support. Herne Hill central is a lovely area but it needs to be less boxed in and congested. This proposal will allow for wider pavements, part paved areas (far safer for all the children and families who go there) and will be far more attractive for investment. Being the closest area to W Dulwich I fully support this. The organisation dead set against this has before and after shots of the boundary = http://www.brockwellpark.com/herne_hill_junction.htm The park is 128.5 acres = 500,000 square metres. They propose to remove 1,000. 1/500th is 0.2% absolutely infintesimal. Obviously this should not set a precedent for encroachment but there is a real need to improve this bottle neck.
  6. Not yet looked at the detail but that road is a bugger to drive through at any time of the day - a serious bottle neck if ever there was one! Five roads into one just don't go. I love Brockwell Park but provided they take a small pinch I won't be upset - it's twice as big as Dulwich Park.
  7. I'm ambivalent. He is at least challenging the received wisdom and mores of this current time Especially in the wake of 9/11. With the notable exception of Noam Chomsky, most media bods were singing from the same hymn sheet. Yes he is a bit of a fantasist/self-publicist but so long as it makes people think that imho is a good thing.

I thought it meant something that normally happens once every month. Sorry for the curdeness but heck this is the offensive thread.
  9. The spludge has always been a favourite of mine - so graceful yet effective. So, was there an Oddbins on LL previously as I've only known of the two in SE21?

  11. Well I hope not, I'm v. fond of our local and don't think a Nicolas would quite cut the dijon.
  12. That's because you leave them on too long. You should on leach for a few hours at a time otherwise they blow a fuse and boil your blood.
  13. There's nothing wrong with a bit of leaehing, in fact it's good for the blood.
  14. That's the thing about the EDF - people love to share their thoughts even when it's s***
  15. I'm not so sure, there's an Oddbins in the Village and one in West Dulwich. The Nicolas is the only one for miles around.
  16. Cudgel - a fave of the Bard: Cudgel thy brains no more about it; for your dull ass will not mend his pace with heating or even better: If I owe you any thing, I will pay you in cudgels: you shall be a woodmonger, and buy nothing of me but cudgels. God b' wi' you, and keep you, and heal your pate. Amended to put some cudgels in.
  17. Oddbins is still thriving in my neck of the woods despite Majestic opening up shop. Sean - the link you sent actually has supermarket recommendations from the lovely Jancis so they can't be that bad can they (rhetorically speaking of course) Superior retailers? own label wines Sainsbury?s Cuv?e Prestige C?tes du Rh?ne Villages 2004 ?3.99 Sweet, spicy, full, dense southern French red from Caves St Pierre. Sainsbury?s Classic Selection Albari?o 2004 ?5.99 larger stores Racy, marine Galician dry white. Not the best but far from the most expensive. Sainsbury's Coonawarra Cabernet 2002 ?6.99 Terrible label but excellent wine from Katnook. Tesco Finest Great Southern Riesling 2003 ?7.99 Delicious Western Australian fragrant, racy white from Howard Park. Tesco Finest Alsace Gewurztraminer 2004 ?6.99 Not blowsy yet very true, floral, opulent French white from Kuehn. .............................. I also mentioned before I found G&B to be quite discourteous so that sort of thing tends to stick in my mind.
  18. Sean - not sure where that article comes from but it doesn't negate what I've written. Yes the vast majority are like a herd of cows who will graze the ?3.99 and buy one get one free shelves. But for the minority who like wine not sugar or suplhites there is still space on the shelf. I don't have huge hang ups about supermarkets so don't mind spending my sheckles in them. likewise I shop at Oddbins or go out to the Rosendale for a smorgasboard of wine tasting. I don't have a preference where I get the wine so long as it is good. The entire high street can get along with one another just fine.
  19. Actually Sean Sainsburys have a terrific range of wine as does Majestic. I too am a big lover of wine and really appreciate some of their finer selections. Yes if you spend a fiver expect to get a fivers worth of wine. I'd agree with you that Oddbins are good, I'd say they still are in my local on Rosendale Road - these guys are really helpful, knowledgeable and most importantly passionate. Majestic do a really nice range of fine wines - the Dulwich branch is one of the select outlets that does the really nice stuff. http://www.majestic.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10151&langId=-1 Sainsburys also has a fine wine section (see link) much of which is thankfully stocked at the revamped DKH brnach http://www.sainsburyswine.co.uk/Webstore/search_results.asp?ProductCode=&SearchByKeywords=&keyword=&ProductClassGroupCodeList=&ProductClassCode=WFINE&ProductGroupCode=&GreatOffers=&DrinksFinder=&RefinedProductCodeList=&Category=&ResetProductClassGroupList=False&ResetAdHocClassCode=False&SearchResultsPageTitle=Fine+wines&SearchResultsTitle=
  20. I used this last year and spent a fortune. In retrospect it wasn't that good a deal. Unlike last year you can't buy champagne with the voucher. If you're going to be buying a lot of wine Tescos and Sainsburys do discounts and Majestic wine is really good too.
  21. when the mood takes me I leap frog bollards.

  23. It doesn't make sense Maurice. London's streets weren't designed for cars and with the little bit of tarmac we have you want to cause more congestion. What exactly do you expect the heathens to do to your home if they can once again drive along Camberwell Grove? Petrol bomb, throw a brick through the window, wave bright shiny palcards with the word "boo" embalzened in gold? Really, you have to share the city with everyone and closing off roads is counter productive. As a left field thought and a compromise, why not put in a toll booth like the one on college Road? that way the money raised can pay for the road and bridges upkeep and levels of traffic won't be so high.
  24. This blocked off road actually deters me from shopping in Camberwell as I cannot conveniently get there via car from West Dulwich. I would not take public transport in/from Camberwell. Not a good idea as I have seen on one too many occassions. Back on the point, I think this actually harms Camberwell's crumbling shopping precinct. Taking Denmark Hill at certain times of the day is almost too much to bear. The car traffic was never that heavy at any rate. Maybe I'll see if I can get my own road in West Dulwich closed off to traffic...
