What cyclist haters are failing miserably to understand is that: 1. Re tax: cyclists are heavily subsidising 'road' tax already 2. Re insurance: cyclists are more likely to be injured yet less likely to be at fault in road traffic accidents If anyone was to ever to introduce a compulsory tax or insurance system it would likely be to the detriment of existing motorists. So. Get. Over. It. Or at least read up on it before spouting nonsensical vitriol. You hate cyclists. We get it. Get some facts, get some data, then be a bit embarrassed about the whole thing.

This whole thread is sadly predictable... "cyclists use the road when my hard earned taxes have gone into providing cycle paths" Direct quote from the Guardian's "Bradley Wiggins is hit by a car, then the cyclist haters pile in" http://m.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/nov/08/bradley-wiggins-cyclist-haters-cycling?cat=commentisfree&type=article

The 'precise' amount of tax would be nothing it would be a pointless waste of time and money not a sane principle at all.

silverfox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It should be mandatory that cyclists are taxied Ermm, presumably you mean 'taxed'? And based on what? Current rules? "Car vehicle tax rates are based on either engine size or fuel type and CO2 emissions, depending on when the vehicle was registered" https://www.gov.uk/calculate-vehicle-tax-rates That'll be ?0 then. And how much will that cost the 'tax' payer to administrate!? Well done SF, bravo!

Chemtrails! Seriously? Have to wonder about some folk...

Have to agree with the above. For me and others it does not encourage 'shared' space at all as we now avoid it. I'm not one of the fastest cyclists by far but even I reach speeds of up to 28mph on my morning commute and I don't want to do that on what is effectively a pavement! Sorry but it's dangerous so I actively avoid this route (although it would be much more convenient for me not to)!
-
Couple of threads on it already, seems people have aired the same opinions about it being unsafe: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,950987,951914 http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,544168,545298 Personally I avoid it and go round the back of Bellenden/Burger King to get to Surrey Canal which is really very out of my way but at least I'm not narrowly avoiding hitting pedestrians all the time!

Interested in cycle to work in the City?
binary_star replied to jonsuissy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@convex I go almost to White City from Barry Rd. Not the most picturesque ride until Victoria then it gets quite nice going through Belgravia, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens (my office stops a bit short from Westfield). In the last two months my routes (one avoids DKH) have taken between 36 and 48 minutes but it's normally around 40mins. -
Yep I actively avoid this route as well and go via Bellenden instead. You can't really blame pedestrians for walking out in front of bikes as the cycle lane looks almost identical to the pavement! I've nearly hit peds a couple of times now which is why I avoid it. Really daft. This and the other improvements to Rye Lane were meant to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, bit of a shame really as I doubt anything will be done about it now, it's already cost ?650,000: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/368/peckhams_rye_lane_the_former_golden_mile_given_650_000_makeover

Yes they bite humans. Reason for lower leg and arms bites is they're often present in carpet and soft furnishings.

Surely the point is that the responsibility of fixing the problem lies with those who caused it, not some 'special' treatment given to pigeons...

I have brewed beer but only ever from malt extract (lager/wheat/pilsner/bitter) and with varying degrees of success. I once tried a ginger beer from scratch but had to decuple the recipe for a party and the result was awfully bitter as I managed to half the quantity of sugar needed, yuck! Would like to get back into it and keen to learn more...

Visited the awesome Neighbourhood Vets earlier today for something unrelated and will now be ditching Frontline in favour of Advocate on their advice as fleas have now built up a resistance to Frontline but Advocate as others have said above will work.

Strange bottles full of orange liquid

Recognise that from this morning. Think I'm more disturbed about the 'arrangement' than the contents :/ -

Gay marriage? Let's have a referendum

Annette Curtain Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The guy's mentally ill, no? Hard to tell from a BBC news article, but if he is, his barrister didn't use it as a defence, or didn't manage to convince the jury he was: "Baxter, of Shipman Road, Market Weighton, admitted dangerous driving and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm against Mr Kirwin and his daughter. In mitigation, Simon Jack [his barrister] said Baxter had been under considerable strain after his father became seriously ill. He added that six drivers working for Baxter would lose their jobs if a custodial sentence was imposed. The court heard Baxter had previous convictions for driving offences and one for assault in another road rage attack in 1994." http://www.trucknetuk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=28723&start=0 Neither presumably did his legal team from his previous convictions. Most articles I've read say he produced a previously concealed razor blade, which seems more convincing than having slit his wrist with a watch, but whether or not that makes him mentally ill who knows.

I was quite surprised at the length of the sentence but then it happens frequently, motorists either get done for dangerous driving or GBH rather than murder/manslaughter. Makes you wonder why there is no such thing as "death by dangerous knife weilding". From a while ago now but this guy only got an extra 7 months for deliberately reversing into a family of cyclists. Of the little girl the father was towing in the trailer: "Emily was left unconscious for six days with serious head injuries. She also suffered a broken jaw, nose, blurred vision and four lost teeth." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2869009.stm GBH? Right. Edited for typos.

Driving schools/instructors that teach in an (automatic) KA or Mini?
binary_star replied to zeban's topic in The Lounge
There is a little automatic car that's often parked up on Adys Rd by Goose Green but I can't remember the name of the instructor (pretty sure it's private rather than a driving school). I go by quite a lot, will have a look for you and post back if I see it again. I think you're limiting yourself only learning automatic though. Unless you're planning on emigrating to and never leaving The States... -

HAL9000 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Who remembers the exact price of every item > purchased during a weekly or monthly 'big' shop? I > don't. So you've never had the privilege of working a checkout then! One of my student jobs sadly, and I can tell you that you might not check every item, but plenty of people do.
-
If the checkout operator wanted to steal potato hoops why on earth would they run them through the till? Surely this would make it harder to steal as they would have to explain to customers why they've paid for items that aren't in their shopping...? Stealing at the checkout would be a lot easier if you DIDN'T run the items through the checkout and either gave them to your customer mate or stashed them for yourself. It makes no sense.
