Averages mean > little. What was their top speed? Are you serious? Beijing Olympians versus your average commuter means little lol. Ok, here's one for you - in 2000 Eric Barone reached 222km/h (138 mph) downhill...maybe he was going that fast!? Or maybe as reports suggested at the time, he was travelling much slower. If you think that that your average commuter even reaches a TOP speed of 30mph you are out of your tree: Average cycling speed - indications Bearing in mind all the provisos above, you still want to know 'average cycling speed? Hear are some general guidelines, all for solo riders on general 'mixed' terrain (ie rolling hills about 30% of the time, and pretty flat the rest of the time): * Beginner, short distance (say 10-15 miles): average speed 12 mph. Most cyclists can achieve 10-12 mph average very quickly with limited training * More experienced, short-medium distance (say 20-30 miles): average speed 15-16 mph * Reasonable experience, medium (say 40 miles): average speed 16-19 mph * Quite competent club rider, some regular training likely, medium-long distances (say 50-60 miles): 20-24 mph From here: http://www.road-bike.co.uk/articles/average-speed.php

So the answer you are giving to my > question "Are you saying your average cyclist > never, ever gets to 30mph?" is actually, "No, the > average cyclist can get to 30mph and above". I'm with Pearson, your average cyclist certainly would't reach anything like 30mph on a commute. The fastest winning time at the Beijing Olympics men's road race time trials was only 28.61mph!

Pearson Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ^ i only suggest taking proof in case the police > do get involved. Yup I thought as much, and I also thought that could be a risk, but then I thought what kind of bike thief that nicks (by the sounds of it) a lot of bikes would draw the attention of the police to themselves? I suppose a particularly savvy thief might register the frame numbers using their own details, but realistically I reckon if the real owner can't prove ownership the thief has no chance... Liking the idea of bringing the mate along. Just out of curiosity how many bikes have you managed to "retrieve" in this way? :)

Well that's 3.5 mins of my life I will never get back... -
Yep I'd do what Pearson suggests, I might even be tempted to do it without proof it was my bike - after all, what are they going to do, call the police???

Goolge have a few I've spotted this morning - Gmail Motion and the autocompleter job vacancy are a bit naff, but as a designer, this one appeals: type 'Helvetica' into Google :)) Any funny ones?

Better get on to Birmingham council, Winterval will be back before you know it.

No but you've replied to one!

To answer James' question, yes I would have prefered to have had the works take place on a Saturday rather than very late on Sunday evening/early hours of Monday morning. The point I made earlier about invonveniencing residents rather than motorists was not that the work shouldn't have been done, but the time it was done and the notice that was given. If inconveniencing drivers was a concern then either Saturday or during the middle of the day after rush hour could have been workable, surely? I don't object to the works at all, I actually weclome the improvements but I am however severely hacked off that the first I heard of it was a pneumatic drill outside my house and that after that had finally stopped, I only had a five hour window to get some sleep before the noise began again at 4.30 in the morning. And I might be being over-sensitive or a tad unreasonable, but you know what no apology, I've not been getting much sleep lately...
-
So the 'work' finally stopped at around 11pm, which was all well and good until at 4am some chap came to pick up some of the machinery. We had a brief respite from 4.30 until 5 when he came back again, then left at about 5.45. This goes on until...oh hang on he's still fecking here isn't he. I can categorically say we got no notice about this whatsoever, my sympathies go out to those with children. Nice to know that the council have prioritised motorists, whose taxes won't have paid for the works over workers whose council tax probably has?? Council will be getting a sh!tty letter of me for all the good it will do!
-
Now the pneumatic drill is out... Yey!! Does anyone else think Monday night just after the clocks have changed is a bit wanky? Fri night or weekend would have been better surely?

Have to say I'm well fucked off too - noticed the sign at the end of the road by the church that says buses are on diversion between 8pm and midnight. Fucking midnight! The missus is thinking of complaining to the council. I've just got back from work and was hoping to get an early night as I have to be up at the crack of dawn. No fucking chance now, it's like being inside a saw mill!!

I didn't realise Africans had a 'reputation' for being strict with their kids, but reputation aside, if I'm honest, I'm not sure what I would do. I'd like to think I'd challenge the behaviour, but it's probably one of those situations that you're never sure of how you'd react until it occured. Btw, thanks for posting the SNT link PR, form there I found out when my local SNT meetings take place. I had asked James Barber about this separately but didn't get a clear response...and now I know (in the middle of the bloody day!)

Sorry to hear about your break-in Rose. I think someone has had a go at our back door lock - it looks like one of the pins has dropped inside the lock and we are no longer able to open the door with the key. Can't be sure until the locksmith comes round, but we are only three roads away from you Rose and it seems a bit of a coincidence.

Camerons plans to reform social housing.
binary_star replied to DJKillaQueen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So where are we up to with this then? The latest info I can seem to find says: "The reform of council housing finance is a Coalition Agreement commitment which, subject to parliamentary approval, we will implement in April 2012." But I can't seem to see when the parliamentary approval might take place...? I also can't see how it's going to make that much difference if it wont affect current council tenants (and then their children??) Surely, it could be up to two generations before any of this kicks in...? DJKillaQueen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > They might feel that at their age they are too settled Aww yeh the poor dears lol. Actually, I could have planed to have moved to Wales and learnt Welsh in those two weeks but historians will never know because that question was left blank on my form. Xenophobes! *goes supernova*

"[As a secure tenant] You have the right to live in your home indefinitely, as long as the council doesn't start legal proceedings to evict you....The most common reasons for eviction include: not paying the rent; causing nuisance to neighbours; using the property for illegal activities such as drug dealing; moving out of your home or renting it to someone else...Most council tenants who live in self-contained accommodation are secure tenants. " From: http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/renting_and_leasehold/council_tenancies/secure_council_tenancies Is this true, i.e. if I'm a council tenant and I win the lottery, I can carry on living in my property? -
Yes, sent ours off last week.

Discrimination was inherent in the BNP's membership policy until they were forced to change their (probably) unlawful constitution. Personally, I don't see it as a problem with any "political" association, but unfortunately the BNP were allowed to carry on being a "political" party after the constitution amend. mockney piers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > anyone has the freedom to belong, and rightly so. Neither police officers nor prison officers are allowed to be BNP members - they don't have to start peddling their nonsense or treating black people differently, they're just banned. I think the same should apply to teachers. In fact I'm actually amazed that children aren't protected against the same discrimination that prisoners and criminals are.
