  1. Bit early for me, I'm usually there for about 8 but I will keep a lookout for the car (and coming home too). What a nasty piece of work hitting your son and not stopping. Just out of interest, are you looking for financial compensation for the damage to the bike?
  2. Ah cross posted with michelle-b. Great minds... Mind you, fools too ;D
  3. thebestnameshavegone Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > get a wall hanger if you can - if you leave a bike > outside overnight no matter how securely, it's a > question of when, not if it will get nicked. I think that depends on the bike...I know of a bike that has sat propped up against a bike stand in Bishopsgate unlocked for over a year. Some just aren't worth nicking lol. Spending 10% of the cost of the bike on a lock is a good ballpark figure, I spent that on one (have two). Really one of the most important things for me to check was that it was approved by my insurer. I'd be gutted if it did get nicked and I had nuffink to show after forking out for an expensive but useless lock!
  4. Of course, this is happening in the US already: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-01/06/pooprints-dog-dna Not sure how well the initial registration of the dogs works though given that the owners have to willingly participate and then fork out the cost (?) evelyne Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We need doggy DNA. > > All dogs required to register. > > Dip a stick in the mess and track them down. > > If caught a sharp right foot up where the sun > don't shine will sort it out.

  6. I had flu-like symtpoms for a few days, got really bad yesterday so I dosed myself up with all sorts but to no avail - had to take a day off work. I slept for nearly 19hrs and dragged myself out of bed once or twice to use the toilet but it took a lot out of me. I honestly can't remember being more ill. Still not convinced it was proper flu though as I am over the worst of it which seems to have only lasted a day or so. Now I just feel like I have a cold. Perhaps I had a man-cold...
  7. Don't trust Google maps - the address is right (1 Lordship Lane, SE22 8EW), location is wrong! I think Google maps thinks the EDT is The Bishop!
  8. Absolutely get a good lock and lock it up properly, top post Applespider. I also recommend getting two locks - if you can, get a d-lock and a chain lock, it will scupper thieves who only carry tools for one type of lock. In the UK a Sold Secure certified lock is normally sufficient for bicycle insurance, but I use a motorbike lock as well for mine because these have to pass tougher standards. Even the best bike locks out there are only ever approved (in the UK) to sustain a 5 minute attack and most of those can be breached in under a minute using either bolt croppers for a cable/chain or a bottle jack for d-lock. So remember that you are only really buying time, and don't leave it out overnight!
  9. Yeh check your insurance too - I don't think mine's valid unless it's locked up with something at least sold secure silver.
  10. Yeh I saw that - the East Dulwich Deli only has one star, but it scored the same for hygiene as the Rye - the 'confidence in management' brought the score down...does seem a bit unfair.
  11. This morning I bought a sandwhich from the coffee stand outside Forest Hill station, which I was surpirsed to see has 4/5. This prompted me to downloaded the app and boy am I surprised at some of the one star-ers out there in East Dulwich!

  14. Just to clarify, I had every confidence the charity 'Tree of Hope' were legit - I searched the Register of Charities on the charity commission's website and they're listed there with a full history of viewable accounts from 2005. Also, their 'activities' are described as helping sick children find treatments not provided by the NHS, so a worthy cause. I was not sure on the company who were collecting on behalf of them 'SOS Clothes Ltd' because although they are listed on Companies House, I still had reservations for the reasons mentioned above. As it turns out, the treasurer at the charity confirmed they were legitimately collecting on their behalf and they were very grateful for it too. Just felt I should make all that clear if it wasn't already! I should imagine that the companies will be making a healthy profit, or else they wouldn't bother to operate? They're not charities themselves after all.

  16. There will always be people who, no matter their environment, will excel. Likewise, there will always be people that fail in life no matter what opportunities are provided for them. However, these people are extreme cases, at opposite ends of the scale. Most people are not complete winners or complete losers but the average Jo in the middle. And for that majority, a good education and upbringing is a key factor for social mobility and later success. Average Jo from Dulwich Village with average intelligence/motivation can have Mummy and Daddy buy him a good education, whereas average Jo from Peckham can't. I read an article somewhere in the news this week about the government's recent review on poverty and life chances. It found that the life outcome of a child can be predicted by their ability level at five years of age. Five. It also found that children who start in the bottom ability range tended to stay there. The same article quoted someone from Save The Children who said that even at 19 months old, poor children start falling behind their richer friends in development. So unless we break the cycle of poor people only having access to poor education (or parenting?), I think that for the majority of babies who are born into poorer families, social mobility is a bit of a joke. For the majority that is. The exceptionally bright or motivated can always find ways to succeed. EDIT: So I think anyone who was brought up on a council estate and has carved out a more comfortable life for themselves and is making a statement about how much they've achieved is entitled to do it and I wouldn't begrudge them that right.

  18. The point of wanting your children to grow up in a position of privelege is that it affords, err, 'privelege'. The clue is right there, it's nonsense to think otherwise. If 'priveleged' backgrounds offered no genuine privelege at all there would be no such thing as school fees. As it stands, some school fees are more than some people's salaries because the higher echelons of society can buy themselves out of having to send their little darlings to crap schools.

  20. Oh, lady M I'm glad you managed to sort it! I did suggest the ctrl+alt+del solution on p2 of the thread tho! Still, good on you!

  22. Ah, sorry cross post with you LM, I'm sure hubby will sort it out!
  23. Yeh it is getting a bit convoluted, if you don't have any luck uploading your screenshot LM maybe you should just force quit the Help and Support window that is obscuring your screen and get rid of the damn thing??? If you want to do that press ctrl+alt+delete which will bring up the task manager. In the 'Applications' tab Choose Help & Support then click 'End Task'. If you don;t see it there, hop over to the 'Processes' tab and see if you can find it there. If you can, select it and click 'end Process'. If you've no idea what the feck is going on, then enjoy your dinner?
  24. Yes, that is paint! Now you might have to press the prtscrn button again to capture your screen. Once you've done this, go back to paint again and click ctrl+v - this should paste the screen capture into the big box. If it does, save it as a file somewhere by pressing ctrl+s. Then if it doesn't need any further cropping you can upload it to the forum.
  25. Ok, let's try something else. There is a 'start' button or windows icon at the bottom left of your screen. Click it and then click the option that says 'run' then enter "mspaint" in the box and hit enter. Did that do anything?
