So to wrap it up and then I am leaving this subject alone, now I have thought about it, the EDF is pretty good because we don't actually use any racist terms, people are just a tad too touchy about saying a person is black, or indian etc and should not be, because it is NOT racist to do that. -

Youtube is not the only example, films, programmes, I was even watching a comedy scrubs the other day and reference is made to colour again...why?!! I was with AOL as my network server so I used to frequent the forums, and chat rooms, and they were really very expressive and open about everything, they held no punches in their views. I liked the generalisation that upon finding out I was English, it meant I had bad teeth...I didn't know that!::o -

Well, if you are a black man calling another black person on the pitch the N word, I am sure it is fine if these rappers are anything to go by, but if you are white, tut tut, shame on you! Hence my point, it is like chinese people calling each other a racist term, Pakistani people calling each other a racist term, Black people calling each other a racist term etc in their songs and greetings, and mentioning it ALL the time and then when someone else who is not of the same ethnicity as them uses that term or refers to their race everyone is up in arms, so the only way to move forward is to ban racist terms being used between each other and others. It cannot be one rule for one, and another rule for another. Being mixed race, I don't go up to all my mixed race friends and go " Hey you half caste/half breed , what is going on?" and then when someone who is not mixed race says that I then get all offended and say " You cannot say that you RACIST person!" it is just wrong. So I should not be using offensive terms even if I am of that colour, and nor should anyone else. -

Exactly and our point is, it should not be an issue because more often then not, it is not an issue, but people keep making it an issue by saying we are not allowed to use the word "Black" and so forth. It is only offensive if you use it to generalise everyone of one race, colour, whatever. And of course using offensive racist words is wrong but that goes without saying. With regards to rappers, how can we do away with the 'N' word when they keep singing about it in their songs? and calling themselves it but others are not allowed to? it is just pointless and not necessary. I personally don't want to hear the 'N' word, not from a black or white person. It is an offensive term, and I get offended when black people call each other the N word , and no one regardless of what colour they are should be saying it. -

Like everything in life, not everyone is the same but as I stated in my post, I have been on many american forums, and from personal experience, I found quite a lot of them more expressive in their views to colour, of course you get the decent people informing them that they are rude and they cannot say that, but I am quite surprised by the language and how often colour comes into play on these forums, same as their films and programmes, more often than not, reference to their race (if they are not white) is mentioned, I don't see the point in this, all it does it just keeps the flame of hatred alive, how often do rappers from the USA mention race in their songs etc? I just think if you keep making colour an issue, it will always be an issue. If that is my personal experience, then that is my personal experience. candj Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > HeidiHi Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > > > I have to say I am very pleased this is not an > > American forum because I have been on many > > American forums, Youtube is a perfect example > to > > how racist and expressive americans are in > their > > views to colour, you only need to watch most > > American films which features black actors to > see > > that more often than not, reference to their > > colour is always made. LOL love that explanation!! Or as one website states it means: Showing an effort to make broad social and political changes to redress injustices caused by prejudice. It often involves changing or avoiding language that might offend anyone, especially with respect to gender, race, or ethnic background. -

Sorry Moos, I was not actually referring to you! Sorry if it came across that way! I was just expressing an example as to how some people are not allowed to express the colour of people when it comes to crimes etc due to offending others but if the person is whatever colour then being PC is not going to make that colour disappear, there is nothing racist about saying the guy was black, asian or white. How often do people say " You know the guy at the local offie?" and you reply " which one?" " the black/asian/white etc one"? and we go " oh yeah! What about him?" it is not racist to do that. And as for exotic, if I don't know if the person is from Iraq, India, Iran, Afghanistan, and the person is not white and definitely not born here, then I say exotic! Exotic is NOT racist, I really don't think someone from abroad who is not born or bred English is going to say " She called me EXOTIC?! that is so racist!" True, even a black, mixed race, person can be racist, I am pleased to say I am not! But then naturally if you do not know me, you are not going to know that. I have to say I am very pleased this is not an American forum because I have been on many American forums, Youtube is a perfect example to how racist and expressive americans are in their views to colour, you only need to watch most American films which features black actors to see that more often than not, reference to their colour is always made. You don't really see that in British Films and programmes and I quite like that, this forum is very mild in comparison. As Moos said, probaly good we are oversensitive instead of insensitive. -

I agree with Sue's post. As a person of colour, I do find it quite strange the reaction on here to things when it comes to colour, someone can say they saw a black guy with dreadlocks burglaring a neighbours' house and then others seems to take it upon themselves to be overly PC and say " You cannot say that, what does it matter if he is black with dreadlock, what will that solve?" but if he is black with dreadlocks, then he is black with dreadlocks! I also found it quite strange when I mentioned someone was 'exotic' and people took offence to that, as someone of colour, I think I would know if this is offensive or not! Amazing that they think calling someone exotic counts as being racist, even I get called exotic, I quite like it! And I don't know any black person who takes offence at being called black after all check application forms, what do they put when asking your ethnicity ? Black British, Black African, Mixed Race, White British, White Irish and so on. It only becomes a big deal when people not wanting to be seen as racist all jump on the PC wagon and say " You cannot call someone black, exotic etc" it just makes things bigger than they are. As for people using the term half caste, coloured etc, I have to say from a personal experience I tend to take this with a pinch of salt only because my grandmother, who is FAR from racist is old school and it was normal in those days to call mixed race children half caste and black people coloured and being old and set in her ways she still calls people that. Even I used to call myself half caste because in the 70's/80's that was normal but naturally as time changed etc, we realised that it was not actually a nice label to have and we changed it to mixed race. My grandmother actually thinks calling someone black is quite offensive, even though they have told her they prefer it but as I said she is from the older generation hence using out dated terms. I will only get offended if they say something that is out of order when using the term black, half caste, coloured etc, i.e all coloured people , Half caste children are dumb etc, otherwise, what is the big deal? the world is full of people with prejudices, and we cannot educate and change everyone. -

On a serious note, I don't know why FelicityNormal decided to have so many usernames, I am quite disappointed in her, as there is no need for that, you can be yourself on here and post under one username, instead of lots of names to try and get a point across. -

Cassius Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > So does this mean that the Lordship Lane Lothario > doesn't exist? No point worrying about it since I am sure most of the ladies in Dulwich will probably not have to encounter their naughty ways! -
I am not scared either, it is just a sad part of life, people die, some in natural circumstances and some in horrible circumstances, naturally it is more scary when it is on your doorstep but I am quite aware that it can happen anywhere, anytime, it could be worse, we could be living in an area completely rife with crime but of course it would be wonderful to exist in a world where murders don't happen but that is a pipe dream! I just feel sorry for his family, it must have been an absolute shock and no one deserves to lose a family member in those tragic circumstances. I worry in general about men, especially boys because there is a lot of gang mentality going on, and in some schools and areas this is obvious. I know of boys from Dulwich who have been told they are not allowed to go to Lewisham or Brockley etc, pretty pathetic since these boys who fancy themselves as gang members don't exactly have 'turfs' worth fighting for, I can understand if you have a private property and someone is trespassing so you shake your fist at the trespasser and tell them to get off your property but to kill people because they come Dulwich and are shopping in Lewisham etc is just bizarre to say the least, we are becoming too much like the USA. ( why anyone wants to aspire to be like the USA is beyond me!).

I told my two sisters about it and they are both going to have a trial class, you should have seen their eyes lit up when I mentioned an army instructor and lots of rolling in the grass! Shu.Kurimu.Sensei, I find that post quite upsetting and disturbing, is possible you could remove it?:(

I think people who spend too much time correcting others really should get a life, what is the odd typo or two? Now text speak...that is a whole different thing! You forgot to correct Mikecg on his use of to and too...its TOO shizzled, not TO shizzled. Mikecg, I am not the spelling nazi but in light of this thread I thought I would be a pain in the backside and correct that typo!;-)

I take it we have a big Polish community in Dulwich then? I know we did when that Dulwich hotel was still standing but since it was knocked down, I presumed the Polish people moved on also.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever had?
Dulwich Born And Bred replied to jimmy two times's topic in The Lounge
Always wear clean underwear! -
And I thought women fought for rights to be as equal as men?!:)-D I have to say as someone who likes her drink, I would never ever get myself into such a state that I am unable to look after myself in public, common sense says you just do not do that in public, especially if you are going on your own to meet a stranger for a date.

If the shoe was on the other foot and I was confronted by an absolutely drunken male on a first date, I would have done a runner.
