The problem is that the pub, for a long time had virtually no customers. Residents have obviously got used to the pub effectively, not being there. Well it is there and has been there for a long time. It's been revived and is once again viable. TGE is not an excessively rowdy pub in my experience and if you move next to a pub, then its a bit much to complain when it reasonably goes about its business.

But as long as the noise simmers down by 10:00 then there isn't much I can complain about really. If I lived next door to a pub, then I would expect it. We are not presumably talking about amplified music outdoors at this time, just customers talking until around 21:30?

This is why I would love the tube to be extended into SE London. Relying on transport services with are not only irregular, but have routes and timetables which are constantly under review is a nightmare. This part of London is the worst catered for in terms of public transport and yet the mayors priority has been crossrail (serving already well catered for communities) and has now switched to crossrail 2 (again serving already well connected areas). When will a politician look at the transport map of London and ask what's happening to address the glaring great hole in the bottom right corner?

I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that TGE has no concern for the ED community. They've actually breathed new life into a previously failing pub. They've also encouraged a new craft fair and put on many other good community events. The pub has proved very popular since it opened (which I believe is part of what those in close proximity are unhappy about) and I for one think it's a great addition to the neighbourhood. You may not think it's location is appropriate for a late licence, which I fully understand, but please don't assume that your view is necessarilly the view of the whole community.

ED house prices: sanity check please
Earl Aelfheah replied to Wanhope's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have never asked for, or considered the square footage when buying a house. I usually look round it several times and make an assessment of whether I like it or not. I've been using nothing more than a visual assessment of it's adequacy in terms of size. Am I insane? Has anyone got an equation which I can use to produce a desirability index of the local area and character ratio concerning the style? Blimey, I've not been looking at any of this objectively enough. Clearly, I am not cut out to occupy my own investment vehicle. -
Yep. I've had a bit of a slug problem too. They're definitely enjoying the wet summer.

Some people will take anything that isn't nailed down. Maybe they should be nailed down. Feckers.

Was the writing on your car, or on your BMW? ;-) I'm sorry you've fallen victim to such a mindless act of vandalism. There are some shtbags out there. Hope you get it fixed up ok.

Unless I am reading it wrongly, isn't the proposal for an additional 6 flats (there already bring 2 in the existing development). I am not sure I buy the 'lots more people driving to M&S arguement. It sells convenience food - the type you might pick up on your wayhome.. its not the type of place you drive to for your weekly shop. Also, how much is the existing carpark actually used? Again, I would question how many cars are actually going to be displaced by its removal. As for arguements about brand snobbery, its all pretty irrelevant to the planning app and deeply subjective, so why bother going there. For me it comes down to whether or not the area can cope with an additinal 6 flats and the associated parking issues. My guess is M&S will end up compromising and reduce the number.

100 hr pharmacy in C.Palace rd ?
Earl Aelfheah replied to boshi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The problem is two fold: The NHS is publicly funded through taxation which we are legally compelled to contribute to. Therefore I don't feel that it is right for that money to be extracted for private profit. This does not bar the use of different providers, competitive market competition, or some sort of incentivisation, but the principle ought to be one of reinvestment of profits / nonprofit. the local authority has a legal duty to provide these services, so should the service fail they (we) would pick up the bill. There is of course an arguement for properly privatising healthcare, but its not one I am in favour of. However, what I am particularly against are these publicly funded and underwritten 'private' companies claiming to be in anyway free market capitalism. -

@the-e-dealer No. Not sure what gave you that idea. The state subsidising private enterprises for the enrichment of a small elite sounds a bit 'commie' though. -

I just read the article in the Mail (linked to above). It does seem wrong to me that public services, paid for out of our taxes should be run for private gain and the enrichment of a few incredibly wealthy individuals. The fact that there seems to be a profit motive in all of this does also put the debate in a different light IMO. -

@sue You're right of course about a aself selection bias with regards online feedback, which favours negative reporting. I have plenty of personal experience with DMC however and I have plenty of friends who have similar complaints as I do with regards their booking system. -
Usually, DVD players have a small plastic clip, or similar on the bottom which allows you to release the drawer and get the disc out. Might want to check before taking the whole thing apart.

@Sue - Speaking to others, reading the comments on the NHS Choices website and on this forum, about DMC, I suspect that you have been lucky in your experience of the surgery. Certainly I have struggled to get an appointment with them on the last two occasions I have tried and an emergency appointment is almost impossible unless you are on their doorstep at 8am. -

Maybe a liberal application of 'no more nails' on the bottom of your pots. Really shouldn't be needed though. I feel for you... it's really awful that everything must be tied down in order to be safe. -

DMC are appallingly managed. See if you can get an appointment there within 2 days as they suggest you can on their website. Unless you queue from 8 outside the surgery, you're lucky to be seen in under 2 weeks.... yet they continue to register new patients. They really don't need to be expanding into new areas right now. Concentrate on sorting out the inefficiencies in their current operation. Good doctors, non-existent / terrible management. Maybe the nature of GP Consortia? -
