Could i please ask ED parents not to describe schools which are not full of 'white middle-class children' as 'in special measures'? I overhead such in the hairdressers yesterday and it had me seething. The school she claimed was failing is Ofsted rated good. As a local teacher whose children have attended one of the less adored ED primaries, I think people should be a bit more sensitive to the teachers, children and school communities which they are dissing. If you choose to reject a school place on the basis of 'no or few birds of a feather' then say so. To claim the school is rubbish is insulting and reflects poorly on you too.

No buses on Lordship Lane going toward Forest Hill
flocker spotter replied to Jennys's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Has the roundabout been made two way for traffic? Just seen someone drive this way - but maybe the fact that he was also on the phone as he drove is more of an indicator than any legitimased road use changes. -
Yes, was disappointed to see it is not on in ED. Who chooses which films show at our local Pic Hs? Every time I want to see a film I find I have to go to Brixton or Peckham.

Cuts to School Funding
flocker spotter replied to editorialmoo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
How come Dulwich Hamlet does not lose any funding whilst all the more diverse schools (ie with higher proportions of FSM children) stand to loose ?750 to ?1,000 per child!! -
Childcare for my 18 month old special needs son
flocker spotter replied to NatMac's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Have you talked to Sunshine House about getting an EHC plan for your son to see if he is entitled to one-to-one support in nursery? -

Have you tried turning the power off to your box, waiting 10 minutes and then restarting it? Ours regularly needs a reboot.

Another ill-thought out council plan....
flocker spotter replied to Rockets's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How can you judge a road improvement scheme to be ill-thought out if you are not privy to the decision-making? There are provably some very good and worthy reasons for planning the work into this week. Besides, if they were to wait until the schools closed, they would be starting work on 22nd December - which would have been ridiculous. -
I have hi-lights and lo-lights to cover my grey. I used to go to GMS until I discovered home hair dresser Stevie. Much more relaxed and convenient than a salon - she cuts the kids' hair whilst my colour takes and I can get on with the laundry! You can find recommendations for Stevie on the forum.

Charter vs Private school

Stay put and you get your > sibling place even if the catchment changes, but > if you move all bets are off. Nice idea to prevent people playing the system but totally unfair for families living in rented accommodation who have little security of tenure. Second children also often want to join an older sibling at secondary school because they already feel an affinity with that place by proxi. These children should not be disadvantaged because their parents want an extra bedroom/(larger) garden etc... People may not like a lottery system (such as at Kingsdale), but it is the only fair system. -

About starting school...
flocker spotter replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Bookbag charm is the only thing you'll need on day one from this list. Any writing will be done with school equipment and with no set tables there is nowhere for your pencil case to go apart from staying in your book bag. Clearly your child is not going to be allowed to go rummaging for that each time she is asked to write her name on her picture! There is also the issue of sharing - a skill that has to be taught for many in Reception - the less sharing of own things the better. As for PE kit, a few brave teachers do start them getting changed from the start of Reception but many leave it until after Xmas once the children have settled into a routine and developed a degree of independence. -
So good to see so much support for today's strike. I have only been teaching 5 years but each year the goal posts are moved and the budgets are tightened. No longer is there one TA per class - even when 20% of the children are either in the early stages of learning English or are two years behind in their learning. 60 hour weeks are the norm - teaching is not long holidays, is it very long shift work. How can overstretched, exhausted teachers be good for children's learning? In addition, there is an atrocious new curriculum focused on tough tests that set children up to fail ( only 50% of this year's year six cohort passed their SATS today). Teachers are best placed to protest against these reforms and fight for a better future for all children. As for taunts about sickness - my local authority school, even one day's sickness requires a return to work interview and paper-trail. I worked for 20 years in marketing and no paperwork was required for sick leave of less than a week. And, yes I did earn 80% more and work 40% less. The whole purpose of industrial action is to disrupt the norm and draw attention. Yes, it is tough on working parents who have to pull rabbits out of hats to accommodate class closures. But we wouldn't strike if we didn't feel so strongly about the current government's decimation of education and children's futures. And the strike wouldn't be effective if it didn't disrupt. I am proud to be a teacher and I feel privileged to be able to make a difference to children's lives, but I also feel angry about the current govt's education policies and feel justified in protesting.

I have no idea where these readings were taken within the school grounds, but two years ago DKH Year 4 children took part in a pollution study in conjunction with Kings College which involved children wearing pollution monitors on their journeys to and from school and within the playground at lunchtime and playtime. When the results were presented to us, the pollution levels in the playground, as I remember, were better than those on many of the children's journeys to school. Possibly the school building shelters the playground, which is at the rear away from the busy roads. Or pollution levels experienced by children on their way to school is more of a danger.

Voting Day - Heber School Closed
flocker spotter replied to pork chop's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The school where I work was used as a polling station - but the booths were set up in the nursery which could be isolated with a separate entrance. This way the rest of the school could carry on as normal. Couldn't Heber do something similar? -
Art scholarships secondary state schools
flocker spotter replied to dontpanic's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Kingsdale offers art scolarships - but you need to be at the school first as they are not awarded until they see the talent in year 7.
