DR and BB, some thoughtful posts. Thanks. Others take note. Informed debate whether we agree with each other or not.

A typographical error is more important than discussing a serious issue? Do you have any deeper views that you would like to share? Well on the positive I have a pointless answer for the game show - Hording is defined as forming or gathering in a large moving group

We are spending 15% of GDP in the short term, to avoid overwhelming the NHS and 1000s if not 1000s of avoidable deaths. Am I being stupid? This does not appear to be putting the economy first. Can you lot not see beyond a knee jerk response of believing that everything this government does is wrong? Irony is that he will come out of this even stronger.... If you want to have a proper whinge here is one - what a stupid time to have left the EU.

Deliveroo couriers are a different species to the Homo Eastdulwichus. They are primitive, resort to tribal behaviours, aren't into culture, and should be exterminated. Listen to the SE23 Fuhrer, Deliveroo couriers are a scourge on our society and need to be rounded up now.

DF the government don't make millions, the government raise money to pay for things that we need in our society. Like the NHS. But on the cynical side if they truly cared about the environment then they would raise fuel duty. Shocking. OK not a covid-19 specific comment.

The idea is that you tell us about your hoarding.

I'm pleased not to be in France under their martial rule. Not a fan of Bojo but at least I can exercise my own judgement about socialising. I sense that many would whinge on this site whatever government did. There is the bigger issue of maintaining some sort of business as usual, economic impact, our well being in terms of being social animals, and the health consequences. History will tell.

I thought that it would be useful to have a thread where people could fess up. Go on, most of you have been hording. Own up. To show that I am not perfect either I though that I would start. I cycle to Lidl a couple of times or so a week to be tempted by the middle isle. I have my staples there too, where I can bask in the glory of saving a few hundred quid a year. I buy cereal once a week, but bought a packet a few days early today. Naughty person. Also, not quite as bad, I like their dark chocolate digestives. But there were none today so I naughtily bought a packet of milk chocolate. I would have got a tin of toms too, but there wasn't any so will have to go to the Turkish grocers on Forest Hill Road when I get the chance. No urgency. ED can decided whether I am pardoned or not or what my penance could be. No dried pasta today but some good news as their fresh gnocchi is back. Excellent - most of their fresh pasta isn't great. Trouble is there will be none left when I go back later in the week as I expect many of you will rush out now I have alerted you. I expect to see profiteering on eBay later.

I was involved in both planning for Sars and Avian Flu. The measures go well beyond what we considered likely at those respective times - but (a) what is going on in the continent will influence our response (b) the world has moved on since my time with the ease of home working © this is a different beast in terms of transmission and health impacts. It is reassuring that we are still taking an evidence with the experts full involvement, that this is a collective decision, and that somehow they've got Bojo to show gravitas and speak plainly/succinctly. This was a strength in most PMs in history. Select Committee's are always interesting and history will judge.

Ia this a facetious post? If so well done. If not please tell me as I will then say what I think of it. I worked one summer in a psychiatric hospital. It was more like a care home before care in the community and the expectation that you would pay to be looked after in later life. It was summer and the staff talked about keeping people alive for many more years due to good nutrition and warmth. But then said that flu would come and take a few out during the winter. When you are old it is a bit of a lottery, as you may escape such diseases or not. I've lost two members of my family through pneumonia so I am not taking this subject likely. Coronavirus may bring forward a large number of deaths, but for many this is near the end of the natural life. The NHS is there to try to prevent this but has a finite capacity. We have the poorest government and the worst Prime Minister in my lifetime but on this issue I am not having a pop, as they are being advised by experts. I expect few of us posting are (experts).

What a shame that the Brothel is no longer open on Underhill Road as this may have provided alternative employment. How and why would you have sacked them on the spot? I'm not particularly sympathetic to the staff at that time but your post does amuse me. What is a decent wage by the way?

What is going on between government and the civil service?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
The word that caught me in the article was 'impartiality'. Civil Servants are not political appointees. On the odd occasion that an interventions is not justified this will be put on writing to the minister ie we don't agree and this is a political decision. The professional relationship should still continue. I also liked this part of the article "Of course these are somewhat exaggerated descriptions of what goes on in Whitehall and Westminster. Civil servants think far more about the political context than I have given credit for, and politicians and political staff do engage in much detailed policy discussion. I certainly did in each of my roles." But I worry the world has changed under Cummings/Bojo. The later is famous for not reading submissions (May was the opposite and wanted to know things inside out) and he seems to make it up as he goes along (current situation he is reflecting the scientific consensus so this doesn't count). Yes minister was an entertaining sit com, from another age. It's not like Spooks, which MI5 described as an entertaining piece of fiction but in private would be thinking "hmmm that is a bit close to reality". There have been other ministers who have not had good relationships with their senior civil servants, not sure if the Priti Patel one has set a new bar. Here's another article of interest https://www.civilserviceworld.com/articles/news/charles-clarke-politicians-who-%E2%80%98slag-off%E2%80%99-civil-service-are-%E2%80%98completely-wrong%E2%80%99 -

It's the new normal. This would have ruined a political career in the recent past. Now lies and personal life the response from many is "well that just shows what a normal person he is". Maybe it's some perverse thing that the media normally needs to find this stuff out, but as he has made it easy then the reaction is very different.

What is going on between government and the civil service?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
I like the video. Interestingly of course she will be briefed by policy and communications colleagues so that she would get the key three to five points over, using the RIGHT terminology. She will face ridicule among here own civil servants if she can't even do that. Or maybe not at Bojo get's it wrong all the time. -
What is going on between government and the civil service?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
So we have had the unprecedented situation of an ex permanent secretary suing government over constructive dismissal, and EDF is only interested in the Bojo baby? If I had entitled the thread something inflammatory about the lovely Pritti perhaps I would have got more interest. Bojo is happy though; speaking during a visit to Public Health England in North London on Sunday, Mr Johnson said he "absolutely" has confidence in Ms Patel. "I think she's a fantastic home secretary" he said. "Anybody who's been home secretary will testify that is one of the toughest jobs in government." He added that he was "full of admiration for our civil service and the job that they do". So all if fine, move on move on, nothing to see here -
Think the brothel was where the new build is on Underhill Road, diagonally opposite the Crystal Palace Tavern.

Met a young lady on Friday night (distant work colleague) and when I told her that ED was up its own rrrss she looked quite perplexed. I was as ever saying this playfully. But as a near neighbour that is the way I view SE22 in recent years. And I talk of the Dulwich Ripples as the effect comes up the hill and spreads into Lewisham. But I'd be interested in the demographics as I probably have a very jaundiced view - yummy mummies, couples from the creative industries moving her due to the prices, views, schools etc. I'm one of those people who if I had my time again wouldn't have been able to afford to live close by. Anyway point for discussion, nothing about Lou who is welcome to share her opinions, I will listen, and DF as well.
