  1. The coalition gave civil servants a right kicking and after a hiatus it all seems to be happening again. I found Philip Rutnam measured, supportive and politically neutral in some brief dealings with him. Not the sort of person to take on a government minister. I don't think this shares anything particularly sensitive or that these views will impact any court case. Guido considers that all civil servants are a waste of space of course. https://order-order.com/2020/02/29/philip-rutnam-quits/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51687287 Former Cabinet Secretaries have spoken up on behalf of their ex-colleagues but we are now in a different world https://www.globalgovernmentforum.com/impartiality-under-threat-a-warning-from-former-uk-cabinet-secretary-gus-odonnell/ And there is previous form too https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/jul/15/anger-over-resignation-of-top-civil-servant-bob-kerslake
  2. Although they should rename it the 'I at Nunhead'. The brothel opposite the CPT was common knowledge 20 years ago.
  3. Had to Google Trust Fundy Hippy as I hadn't a fc what it meant. "Living a decadent life filled with exotic drugs, music festivals and Daddy's credit card, the trust fund hippy leads quite a lavish existence. A delusional breed of trust fund babies inspired by ideals of free-love, artistic expression and environmental conservatism, these particularly abhorrent hypocrites usually amount to nothing more than lazy acid-loving potheads who refuse to to recognize their place in society as cash-cows for largely unoriginal music acts fueled by new age technology, massively oversized speakers and lightshows so over-the-top and spectacular that the true hippies of the '60's and '70's probably would have enlisted in 'Nam just to see them set to Pink Floyd. " Well FM, I don't recognise anyone like that. So a group of well meaning locals helped to save a lovely pub. Go to the site of the Forest Hill Hotel that Antic turned into flats and see how it would have gone otherwise. It aint perfect and it aint my favourite pub. But FFS what a stupid thread. I've sworn more times on social media in this post than I have done in total in the past. PS I used to love the old Crystal Palace Tavern, and the amateur quiz. There was a brothel over the road. Before the Trust Fund hippies took over.

    Whiteness?

There are (not their are), sorry.

    Whiteness?

Hemingway Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > To defend the 'un educated' white working class, in reality there's far more racial mixing in terms > of marriage, relationships, parenthood, family, working together, living next door etc etc in the > working class than among the worthy middle classes who think they're not racist at all but probably > have a handful of black friends at most..... Not so sure about this. Their are swathes of working class who moved out from the cities as part of white flight and the like and live in very white areas. Fortunately there are Eastern Europeans and gypsies for them to hate - well at least that's what my family in Tamworth come up with (they had to move out of Birmingham due to sharia law). Excuse me being facetious and I am sure you cannot make sweeping generalisations as I have just done.

    Whiteness?

I'm split between "what a lot of inflammatory nonsense" and "something here to discuss? So intuitively - the UK is predominantly a western European culture (liberal/conservative?) infused with wider influences through trading, the commonwealth and the like. Immigrant populations maintain some of their culture, sticking together, being a minority etc, such as food, music and the like. And then that melds with the indigenous. And for those from commonwealth countries the culture is influenced by European and sometime some sense of European being superior, and their's primitive (colonisers, missionaries etc). Ultimately I expect much of is to do with socioeconomic status, income, education and the like, although a white person growing up in a cosmopolitan area with money and education may be very different to one from the shires. It feels very dangerous to go down this whiteness route, flag of St George etc. But the above is off the top of my head. To toss a grenade in the EDF (SE22 not the organisation of the same initials) does feel very white, at times being a bit patronising and occasionally a tad of casual racism "those people would wouldn't they". Tom Robinson not Tommy Robinson please.
  7. How come there have been 12 posts and the term NIMBY hasn't been mentioned yet? Maybe you should welcome this as part of Johnson reuniting society. PS they have offenders in Dulwich Park with the orange community payback outfits on. I saw dog walkers, various boot camp exercisers, parents with young children etc etc and didn's see any mass panic.
  8. There was a great episode of the IT crowd where Jen is going out with a chap called Peter File. Moss says "that's unfortunate, you could pronounce that as pedophile. Or in America pedda-phile." Cut to the last scene and Jen is in the airport with said Mr File. An airport announcement goes out calling for Peter. "is there a Pedophile here". Penny drops... "taxi"

Whatever happened to that nice August Walker?
  10. Why do we have road narrowing? Because you selfish drivers cannot stick to speed limits and government and local authorities wont enforce speed limits. Bring in average speed cameras, it will be like banning smoking in pubs and restaurants, in a few months we will appreciate the change. And similarly take action against poor parking close to schools - parents, you know who you are. You will be pleased to know that my ire isn't just aimed at motorists. Unnecessary traffic lights: Forest Hill Road and Colyton (I'm sure these were only supposed to be temporary), Loughbrough Junction (Akerman Road, no traffic), Lambeth Bridge South. Poorly joined up local authorities - Southwark and Lewisham, the latter blocked right turns onto the South Circ forcing traffic to use the farm track that is Honor Oak Road. Don't start me on speed bumps.
  11. As ever any thread about road use, cyclist etc shows a great degree of ignorance by fellow drivers/road users. Ignorance both in terms of knowledge and rudeness. As a professional tree hugger ie someone with vast experience number 1 myth is that smooth (aka eco) driving means that journeys take longer. By anticipating the road ahead, and avoiding harsh acceleration, you stop less (not more)maintaining momentum, reducing fuel use and CO2 emissions, less nitrogen oxides (as you are stressing your engine out less), less particle pollution from brake, tyre and road ware, and less general wear and tear on the car. A win win win win win situation. Yet our politicians wont propagate this message for fear of losing votes - the whole concept of being able to drive when you went where you want how you want has to be challenged. Sadly we have the blunt instrument of the ULEZ, rather than the benefits that widespread behaviour change would bring. If you want an adrenaline/endorphin high then get a bike, go carting, or get involved with car or motorbike related sports, off road or on a circuit. And even those who get the climate change/air quality angle, most of you still drive like shite. Just go to Court Lane - I can do the whole road without braking once and average the same speed as the rest of you - accelerate/brake accelerate/brake accelerate/brake

  13. We are all Sparticus Kirk Douglas at a mere 103. End of an era I expect.
  14. We walked home as kids, and got talking to a man in our street. He used to invite us in to look at the house he was building for himself. One day we passed with my mother who thanked him for entertaining two 9 year olds And the shocking thing is that all he was doing was telling us about the house he was building and nicely engaging with two curious kids. Of course years later he wouldn't have dared talk to us at all. Things were no different to now in terms of the dangers, we were warned not to take sweets from strangers or get into stranger's cars but it is a shame that everyone gets excited without knowing the facts. But if you see this gent do run
  15. A Google search was interesting, but just took me to health problems. Where you get a lot of wee it that ends up stinking like ammonia - bus shelters, hot countries with poor sanitation and the like. Perhaps environmental health could help?
  16. Andy Gill, Gang of Four, took on the fascists (lots to learn here) https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/feb/02/andy-gill-gang-of-four-genius-guitarist-who-burned-a-route-out-of-punk
  17. We lost. We need to move on. We thought that common sense would prevail. It didn't and it made things worse (as much about the ERG as remainers in the government I hasten to add). And that opportunist took his chance. Friday night was so so sad but by trying to get some moral high ground wont change things one jot. And just gives ammunition to the popular view that we are stuck in our London bubble.
  18. Part of outcome will be a move of high tech including niche motor manufacturing to the EU. That's not a whinge but a result of lack of harmonisation. Happy to be proved wrong.
  19. Move on. Stop whinging. Get active. Dare I say take back control. (My rabid rellies would be laughing their socks off)
  20. Have a good look at yourself East Dulwich. What did you do before the referendum? Did you campaign to stay? Did you influence the agenda? Did you get involved in a political party or other relevant oganisation? I expect only a minority did. I didn't and I was probably like most round here who were too complacent that we wouldn't be so stupid to vote to leave. So not sure why there is a thread criticising those who were pleased. If they had rubbed your face in it, that is a difficult matter. I can't go on Facebook, I've blocked some Whatsapp addresses and have lost 'friends' and it has affected relations with some members of my family. But why did I not engage with them before the referendum rather than thinking it would never happen?

    Radio shows

As a student on a drunk Saturday night we'd tune into Radio Moscow telling us all about how much better things were in the Soviet bloc, and no doubt insulting us bourgeois pigs in the West. Wonder what happened to the presenters. Here's a later clip

    Radio shows

Wow, I thought this might get a little more interest. Surely East Dulwich does listen to the radio in one way or another. Half the comedians on Radio 4 live somewhere around here. I even chuck in a red herring but nobody bites on that - I think Jono was on GLR before Paul Ross started to do the breakfast show. A nice distraction in a difficult week.

    Radio shows

Hopefully a harmless thread. Why is Gideon Coe so good? Also enjoy Robert Elms on Radio London. Dip in and out of Radio 4. Not a fan of much of the commercial radio stuff. Last time we tuned into Capital it was when Jono did the morning show - although a quick Google suggests he never did so I must of been on a substance. Five can be OK at times but annoying other times. Past point of no return on Radio 1, tuned to BBC Asian once by mistake and that was good but not sure about schedules. Tom Robinson, Stuart Marconie, and Cerys, Radcliffe (less so since moved) and La other faves. Get a double helping of Cerys on Sundays! The Monday night tea time comedy on 4 is always excellent.
  24. Just agreeing with the views on Consent, wondering why it was still on but then seeing the pist is two years old when I saw it. During the New Year's sale was surprised how little I want to see in the West End. The Comedy about the Bank Robbery is no doubt still excellent. I go less and less to the West End as prices generally silly or you are up in the Gods and do the Brockley Jack from time to time. Seetickets send me offers including some good stuff off the West End eg Park Theatre. Women in Black is excellent in the West End.
