  1. Off to Carcassoonne shortly so interested in recommendations already made and ones to come.
  2. May I commend this thread as this is the first reference that I have seen to Hurricane Smith for over forty years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Smith_(record_producer). His link to Tony Butler (ex BRMB) just makes things even better. It's been a good day today.
  3. Where's gender stereotypes gone. It was supposed to be an innocent thread. Was it hijacked by nefarious types? I left another forum because of control freakery - not that I am accusing you administrator.
  4. Worked with her on the Olympics and shared the odd conversation. Good to hear all of the positive tributes from all sides.
  5. Mate is in France looking at a time share complex, out of curiosity. A black British couple come in. The British manager of the time share says to my mate "don't worry about them, we'll put them off". My (white) mate is married to a black British women. This stuff still happens, generally not in the metropolis. Keep challenging it. I also need to practice a response along the lines of my wife/husband is black, or my sister in law is Asian when I hear casual racist remarks. Happens pretty infrequently, and I tend to not say anything but just be a bit gobsmacked.
  6. Thinking of ED's preoccupation with low life, here's one for you
  7. Thing that winds me up about Uni Challenge is that as you go through the rounds it progressively favours those with a private education - the arts and classics that state schools normally don't cover. I watch open mouthed thinking htf and wtf do they know the answer to that. In the early rounds I do pretty well. That said the winners this year did not come across as particularly privileged even though I outplayed them on the bonus questions. Meant to add that Only connect is in deed a must, impressive performances Quia. Don't do Eggheads very often.
  8. Fiction, I am mixing real life in Dulwich with a 1970s TV programme. Glad to hear that the star of a series that portrayed disabled people positively did well, although I expect he was able bodied (and clearly died years ago). But I do love a bit of trivia and better gem up on this sort of thing for when I am Pointless or Millionaire. What was the other programme I was thinking about?
  9. Sad to hear about Raynond Burr - how the mighty fall. It is a shame that he didn't receive better life and financial advice. Yes this posting is in bad taste. No, most wont have a clue what I am on about. Worse still I've managed to mix two 60s/70s thriller series.
  10. Yes I too find her irritating. The funny comments that she is reading from the auto-cue are particularly annoying. as for hubby I hate Would I lie to You, but conversely the Unbelievable Truth is good listening. On another thread I whinged that I never get tickets for radio shows. Computer says no.
  11. Sounds rather traditional white Anglo Saxon culture to me. Isn't that what we voted for? And in our dystopian future this may come true (Handmaiden's tale). Whilst I hope to attract some humorous suggestions on places to go, there is separate discussion here on liberal freedoms, and how Trump and Trump's decision yesterday may put that back and bow perhaps our society acted in the past and no doubt some would like to return to those 'family values'. PS looking at the recent bedding advert were a mixed race couple get up in the morning and plan to go to the bed shop. (a) even twenty years ago that would not have featured in an ad and (b) 50 years would have been illegal in some states in the USA. I expect Iran is a fascinating place to visit and perhaps no worse in some respects than some of the Gulf states in terms of freedom - noting the human rights abuses in Qatar - anyone for football?
  12. Brilliant suggestion but an article here gives all the reasons not to go skiing in Iran - worryingly good snow, worryingly cheap, worryingly friendly. I sadly looked at Trumps twitter trumpets today and feel that this link would be a great one to add https://www.inthesnow.com/6-reasons-not-go-ski-holiday-iran/
  13. Monday night - only connect, Question of sport. The wonderful Pointless, Pop Master. Thinking of this as Ken Bruce has just invited people to call in for pop master and invited all on the basis that anyone can be better that the recent contestants on Millionaire. Jezza, despite my views on his politics and bawdy behavior etc is an entertaining host. Shocking decision making by his contestants - pop culture ask the audience, leave the more intellectual stuff to Jezza. Thunderbird 5 is not a submersible and phosphorous is not a metal. These are potentially life changing mistakes. I expect I am not the only one shouting at the screen. Hope others are also watching this on live TV rather than catch up.
  14. Thanks all for the advice. Farage drinks in some of my 'local' pubs in Victoria/Westminster so I will be avoiding them. With our new exciting relationship with China, the US and Russia there will be plenty of skiing opportunities outside of Europe.
  15. Kes at the Brockley Jack, great small pub theatre https://brockleyjack.co.uk/jackstudio-entry/kes/
  16. And to join in with Sue, posters offering views about 'low life' doesn't help either. He without sin cast the first stone (from someone who was not always an angel. If you want to read and join in about low life you need the Daily Mail's website. How do you spot low life by the way. Is there a uniform?
  17. Things change as you age. Mine started as a teenager and was very acute, I would write June off, gone by the middle of July. Now my season is twice as long - getting early indications but not medicating yet - but far milder. The introduction of the cheap over the counter non-drowsy antihistamines was a revolution/revelation

    Brexit View

Totally uninspired in Lewisham, but did exercise my hard fought democratic right and also tried to get involved in some debate (and if I don't like it I should stand myself, that's democracy for you folks). No Brexit backlash against Labour in my manor - discuss.
  19. Heaven know.s how you right click on a phone, had enough problems with a Macbook, bally IT dinosaurs eh? Anyway an appropriately themed song for this weekend (reference to a thread not insulting anyone)
  20. I wont be hanging around parliament waiting for a last second legal challenge/reprieve like families waiting on execution day in Alabama. With recent events suggesting we could be heading for a pretty hard Brexit what are others planning to do? Best to get out of Europe or face our future here with enthusiasm, trepidation or sorrow (or all three). Please treat this as a bit of gallows humour. I'm not threatening to leave the UK as Lloyd Webber did in 97. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/32590242/do-celebrities-leave-the-country-after-a-general-election-no---not-really

    Windows

Oak Joinery https://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1856/64669.php Used them for a complete window and separate 'sashes'. A sash is the opening window, a box sash is when the window slides down in a box. Don't get me started! Go for hard wood - my pine ones need repainting every couple of years, the hard wood one has been painted once in nine years.
  22. Baby badger then...
  23. Mouse. We get them bought in by the cat. Personally never use 'dead' traps as they only come in for warmth and food and simply better to block their entry points and don't leave food out. But if we were infested I'd probably think differently.
  24. I'm really excited too. Let's have more threads like this. Administrator, you did't spot my post when I was asking for people's credit cards, passwords and pin numbers. In jest of course. Well managed, well done.
  25. Hope I can bring some light relief. In the 80s I was studying in Glasgow and looking for some house mates. In my earlier school days we'd use the term 'straight' for someone a bit dull/conformist. In my youth you could be a punk or a straight. The term also meant something else, and certainly so in Scotland. So when I put a note up in the accommodation office of one of the less prestigious universities I was the butt (ho ho) of the jokes among my fellow students. But bless the students of the day (mainly local Glaswegians) as the responses that I got on my ad (those interested wrote their contact details) were full of good humour, and not offended or offensive. Now that has got me started. In 6th form we had a parents' evening where were showing some of our special projects. I was doing one on divining where we placed bits of metal, water and stuff under lifted turf. I knew the word for a piece of turf was 'sod' which of course could also be used as an insult or a sexual practice. So I am thinking in a Peter Griffin sort of way "don't say sods, don't say sods"), and in my confusion I spoke about lifting the turds of grass.
