  1. I love this one on railway technology. No holds barred in some of the comments. Makes us look like a load of softies (note Foxy, Louise, Sue, Rendel etc). I'm teasing of course. http://www.railtechnologymagazine.com/Rail-News/vivarail-to-supply-three-d-trains-to-west-midlands-trains-for-marston-vale-route?utm_source=Rail%20Technology%20Magazine&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=9228664_RTM%20ROUND-UP%20Mar%2018%20wk%201&dm_i=IJS,5HSVS,KZQ0U6,LAX1Y,1

Drinks in the Westminster Arms (never liked it), the Speaker (brilliant pub, let down by the clientele) and the Marquis of Granby in-between the two (both in location and my views). What's worse is the double takes you get by passers by, as he is often outside having a fag. Smoking in the workplace, pubs, schools and restaurants will of course be compulsory when we leave). Actually he must quite enjoy Austria where you still get smoky cafes, restaurants and bars.
  3. And there appear to be snobs and the rest of the population. And inverted snobs like me.

So I get most of my information from the Archers. Mind you that Brexit supporter chancer gentleman farmer/dodgy businessman Brian has been showing his true colours recently. The other source is a satirical cartoon called Family Guy that used to be on BBC 3. Not sure what has happened to BBC3 has it mutated into London Live? Anyway I digress. So there is an episode of FG where they are at Ground Zero (before rebuilding). So it was the Iraqis that did this? No it was Saudis. Oh. But supported by the Saddam Hussain? No, Pakistan. So it was all the Iraqis fault, we'd better invade. So we've made a bit of mess of the financial sector by taking too many risks/deregulating? Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans (delete one if appropriate) And our overly bureaucratic NHS which at time fails to focus on prevention/public health and will be challenged by the ageing population. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. And we've failed to invest in our traditional industries, move with the times, create quality jobs in our industrial heartlands. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. And this has led to too much concentration of power and money in London and the SE. Yes it's all the fault of Brussels/Eastern Europeans. Ah, I get it, we need to leave Europe. Invade Iraq. Build a wall between US and Mexico. etc. Disclaimer, the above were probably not the best argued examples and I probably not explained industrial history, globalisation, shifts in power etc etc well.

What happened to that nice Mr Farage? I don't see him around the pubs of Westminster any more. Perhaps he is spending more time with his family.
  8. Is this a light-hearted thread? If so it's been nice to light a fire, not bother about going out, work from home, go sledging at the Horniman If it is a serious thread. Struth, this is not extreme weather. We are truly rubbish in the SE. It was worse over winters 08 - 10 etc etc. It will be gone by Saturday. Never missed one day of school through snow and only one day of work when Britain was properly frozen in 1981/2 If it is a nasty thread, to quote John Simm, in Collateral, we really are turning into a nasty little country

I understand that there were numerous great bands at Lewisham Odeon - such as Bowie and the Clash https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewisham_Odeon I've just found out that there's a new and quirky cinema in Deptford that sounds like the old Ritzy https://www.whirledcinema.com/
  10. They've now gone into spam mode, book a flight and then get bombarded on a weekly (and often daily) basis with 'special offers' - car hire, hotels, prostitutes, drugs. It's always a last chance special offer before you fly. Obviously sex workers and narcotics aren't on offer yet, but Michael may be thinking about expanding the service. He'll have difficulty competing with the 'Easy' brand.

Please don't disrespect a seriously important profession doing a very essential job. It's about probability rather than an exact science, with zillions of different variables. It's one of the main reasons that super computers were developed. Spend some time reading instead of poorly informed comments. www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/in-depth/supercomputers I just as uppity when people criticise medical professionals, scientist and other experts who have to base their advice on natural systems based on their best interpretation of the evidence "oh they said sugar is bad, then it was fat, then it was salt and now it is alcohol". Trump being one of the main criminals in all of this antiscience rubbish. In fact this may be pistols as dawn.....
  12. I was at home yesterday and it was lovely looking at the weather - alternating sunshine and snow showers, the light, and the birds (I think we have some migratory large blackbirds and at the moment the wood pigeon is adept to knocking suet pellets out of the feeder). Got bless our four distinct seasons and don't let Chris Evans (knobhead climate change sceptic) or Brussels take them away.
  13. I picked peas as a student, easier than doing spuds (back breaking) and far better than soft fruit which paid the equivalent of about ?2 an hour. All casual, all cash in hand. The generation that did this sort of thing has gone - students and school kids (wouldn't do it any more), urban poor (wouldn't do it any more), travellers (not sure whether they still do casual farm work), and as said many of us would also be signing on. Interestingly the farm has diversified into B&B. Most voted to leave in the area. Brian Aldridge is a keen leaver, but also a crook and a philanderer. Not a good role model for the rural gentleman Brexiting farmer (or maybe it is).
  14. Don't diss Peckham. You can keep your ED cinema and stick it where you want. Peckham is great. The Old Ritzy was great.
  15. Great place. Queues take me back to my child hood, at the local Plaza, during half term. Even I am not that old enough to remember children's Sat morning cinema clubs.
  16. That what all men say, not even 8cm (why does an elephant have four feet?)
  17. Thanks all. I borrowed an SDS drill when chasing cabling into the kitchen walls, and had to buy a diamond tipped cutting disc. Even then it was hell. Bally cowboy builders in the mid 30s, if they'd known that owners would have wanted to do minor updating 80 years later. Still hopeful that there are some special masonry nails - you tube suggests putting them through a cork to steady before you hammer, I may try that too.
  18. Best quality bits and drill DF? Prices have come down but so has quality (from Screwfix user reviews). The masonry bits I bought in the past used to come with free resharpening. The throwaway world is not the fault of the Chinese manufacturers - they just provide the product at the quality we demand, for this sort of thing poor!
  19. For some reason in the 1930s they used a thin layer of plaster, and underneath rock hard sand and cement. On interior non-supporting walls a soft breeze substance was then the bulk. So masonry nails bend, drill bits dull, and when you get past the cement the drill then goes all over the place. I've drilled out, and then put a wooden plug in which can then take a nail, say for hanging pictures. Accurately drilling say to put up shelves is a nightmare, both due to the bit slipping, or not going in at 90 degrees. Googled too, but maybe I am not doing a specific enough search Obvious thing is to get an even better drill, and top of the range masonry bit. Banging nails in doesn't seem to be an option. Serious suggestions only - not 'move house' or 'bring a man in'
  20. Met office are the best in the world Daily Express and other tabloids buy their forecasts from the cheapest service and tend to be alarmist. I'll be cycling in all week as per usual, and sadly I doubt if it will be sledging weather, but I'll have an extra layer. I expect airports will be well prepared. Biggest issue I ever had was with (a) fog a year ago all airports disrupted (b) getting to Luton airport on a snowy day as Thameslink was down, but not due to the weather (you couldn't make that one up!)
  21. I was ill camping in Lombok and threw up outside the tent. I watched a rodent eat it later. Precious.
  22. Over rated, then again most comedians who do the stadium circuit are. OK, just not THAT funny.
  23. More of a Brexit conversation, yes with an ageing population that Brexit will add to, we will need robots to support health and social care (and labour-intensive industries), as Japan are doing already. A fact not planet fear or Remoaning.
  24. Pedestrians stop or turn without looking, for example when looking at their hand held computer things, are often distracted by other things such as their Sony Walkmans or gheto blasters. There should be compulsory training, learner badges, lights mirrors and indicators, a pedestrianising test, and a new offence of dangerous pedestrianising, or pedestrianising without due care and attention. They often have no tolerance of other pavement and road users, do not pay pavement tax, and are probably uninsured. Sadly this post is not purely facetious.....
  25. So there is an occasional problem with 'ghost drivers' on the autobahn, cars driving in the wrong direction. There is an elderly couple (to bring this up to date, this could apply to other age groups) on the road near Stuttgart, when they hear an announcement on the radio. "Warning of a ghost driver on the Bundesautobahn 8". The passenger turns to the driver and says "what only one?".
