Two things that put me seriously off professional football - music after goals (thank God most of those teams were relegated to the Championship) and garish away kits. Three actually - unecessary changes of kits. So not only do you have a dreadful second kit, you insist on wearing it at away matches? Yuk. Just leave, now, just leave the Union, now, and don't come back until you have sorted it. Anyway I've found it. Just presenting an alternative view.... Not necessarily mine. But I think that cleaning has a certain element of skill (or dexterity, determination or whatever). Something that I am not very good at and similarly very slow. Similarly painting, wallpapering and the like. I can do them all, but many of those charging much less for their time ar far better. Does it matter that I can (occasionally) put together a reasonend argument, evaluate evidence, use equations, come to an agreed way forward etc when my house is dirty and the paint/paper is peeling?

There is a dumping ground for old mattresses and used tyres by Camberwell Old Cemetery. Langton Road. Always amazes me as Lewisham pick up mattresses from outside your house so it must be you Southwark residents! The tyres are from dodgy businesses. Never understood why people fly-tip.

9,300 people a year are injured by fireworks each year in the US and arond 4 people die. As a kid I think we had similar statistics at a time when you could pretend to be 14 and buy them loose from the corner shop. It's a shame that the prettier quieter firworks are less common - OK hardly spectacular but nice when we were kids. But on the up side the drastic decrease in firework injuries particuarly as the garden displays became less common. A mate used some display fireworks in his small garden a few years ago. What comes up comes down and bloody lucky not to clout someone in the street. Funnily enough I made my own illegal fireworks around 30 years ago. Helped working in a lab. I am not really sure the point of my posting.

Going back to the original question. I've said earlier the economic shock when the price of oil went through the roof in the mid 70s that screwed my father's hard earned pension and had a massive effect on family finances let alone the disintegrating economy of the late 70. I feel this is a repeat be it a separate and self-inflicted cause. I vary between denial and anger. We are a more divided nation than ever and much of this is to do with the apparent hatred of us 'lefy do-gooders' across much of the country. Well we may be do-gooders but hearts and intentions in the right place and we want (or wanted) a united country. There are plenty who know far more about economics and politics than me - rather than loath them for this (as I suspect many outside our informed community would) I learn from it. Wow. So no industrial decline from the 50s onwards? Motorcycle industry was dead before joining the then EEC and cars we made (and have driven many of them) pathetic. Read a history book. There have been good times and bad. Even at our height the Germans and US were knocking at our door with, quite often, superior production and technology. And that is not even going into the way we used trade barriers, embargos, tarifs and colonisation. Definitely the most Little England comment I've seen for a long time. Can anyone beat that?

As someone who has a professional interest in this sort of thing it would be good to hear from those who have bought, thinking of buying, or decided not to buy a SUV vehicle. This is not an opportunity to slag off Chelsea tractor drivers. We can all do this. But those who chose (or not as is the case) to buy one due to practicality or whatever. I wont offer any criticim and it would be great if others act similarly. Including not commenting on use, occupancy, school runs or whatever. My flag of truce is up. I'll explain more later but there is no hidden agenda here (beyond a better understanding of purchasing decisions). There is already data and researcg out there. Also any objective views are welcome from interested observers. Leave talk of bikes, car clubs, publc transport, congestion and obsesity to another thread.
