Go to the Fox on the Hill at 9am any morning (or any other time for that matter) and see how a pricing policy works. It's not wrong it's just how it works. I've been there a few times and the beer is generally very good and exceptional value. The whole thing (food et al) is what you'd expect for the price, personally I'd rather pay a bit more and go to the EDT (nurse, the screens)

incident in dulwich (hamlet school)
EDOldie replied to jessd26's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The story I heard was Mr Green, who as well as running the Art Stationers and Toye Shoppe in DV, is THE local historian had some WWII memorabilia dropped into him. One of the items was labelled as an incendiary bomb found in Brockwell Park, either during or after the war. Thankfully he had the sense to phone Old Bill who promptly shut down DV until the thing was declared safe. There are no antique shops in DV anymore, or are there??? -
Bl@@dy hippies. Did Marc Bolan go to Alleyn's or is that one of those urban myths?

Don't let the posts put you off. It is a lovely pub, but thats what it is, a pub. Try it and post what you think.
-
You're right Gen17, it was always a nice pub to walk to (and stagger back from) on the right day, but a destination rest.? don't think so. They don't understand their market.

SEvian'22 Good point Loz, there were several 'Spas' around the area including one near the Grove (Harvester) which was Dulwich Spa I think, there was also Beulah Spa and Sydenham Wells. I'll be looking at my old maps tomorrow.

Just after they'd done the refurb I thought I'd go in there and have lunch. Had a look around and couldn't work out who they were aiming the pub at. I think someone in marketing had gone 'Oh, Dulwich, ABC1', without even bothering to visit. Anyway the food was passable for a quick bite but every other minute or so, one or other of the staff kept asking me if everything was all right. The last time I was asked I was so fed up I asked if something as supposed to be wrong and what was the problem? Customer care should start with the food and drink not the feedback from mediocrity. It's such a shame as it used to be a lovely pub with a great garden in the summer, as did the Grove (now the Harvester) only a few years ago. It'll be the Dog next, mark my words.

We hate sucess in this country. It's one of the great amenities of the area (if you're not a veggie). Honestly, you've got the knives out for the butcher! What next?
-
Of course if the Italian butcher had had a stake in the business it could have all been so different.
-
That Italian butcher was also at Moens in Clapham. Looks like he got the chop from both of them.

The problem, if there is one, is that both the major channels, BBC,ITV, are obsessed with the Murdoch agenda (aka Sky news). So they don't give a toss about the paying customer, its a game between them all. The triumph of style over substance. Try giving up all news, TV, radio, papers for two weeks, it's very liberating but a bit dull after two weeks.

Has the ED housing market reached the bottom yet ( II )
EDOldie replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't think you can get a lot more specific than individual post codes, can you? I think history repeats itself and when we do get out of this almightly mess this dreadful govt. has led us into it's the top end of the market that will bounce back quickest of all. I think anyone living in SE22, including myself, that owns their own house should be fine and better off than a lot of people in London and the UK more generally. -

Has the ED housing market reached the bottom yet ( II )
EDOldie replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think the interesting thing here is not when the market will change but why? My guess is that some people will want to buy as they see bricks and mortar as a safer haven for their money than the financial system and you can live in a property but not a bank. On the other side of the coin sellers may consider this not the best time to sell and be reluctant to put property on the market. This could lead to a shortage of supply and a, however unbelievable at the moment, rise in prices. There is some evidence to bear this out. During the last major, er, house price correction, between 1988 - 1995 house prices in SE22 only went down by 2.2% compared to SE23 -11.6% and SE15 a massive -22.3%. Interestingly, and some of you will feel very smug indeed, prices in SE24 during the same period went up by 18.1% and in SE21 by 28%. This was a pattern repeated over the whole of London where property in (sorry) 'better' areas actually went up in value and property in the 'poorer' areas went down. The extreme examples being SW3 (Chelsea) +59.8% and E16 (North Woolwich) -37.9%. These figures all relate to the same period '88-'95. -
I'm a bit of a fan I know, but the Herne does seem to have almost the best of both worlds, had a lovely late afternoon pint there yesterday.
