  1. I think it must be sitting in the hammock in my garden in the days when we used to have something called a summer with a great golden orb in the sky. A glass of sparkling wine in one hand and a good book in the other. I also really enjoyed bbq'a at the Magdala (now sadly departed). Hope you continue to enjoy ED
  2. Saw an ex member of staff (sad that they've all been scattered around as they all got on so well) who told me that she was reliably informed it would be a 'gastro-pub' I suppose now it can be in direct competition to the Palmeston & Herne. Sorry if that point was made many many remarks earlier. However - when......
  3. Mmmmm I'm sure Vanessa Feltz must eat.........
  4. Hope they've all got their umbrellas and their anoraks, not to mention scarves, gloves and hats - it's not warm today. Such a shame as it would have been glorious on a summer's evening.
  5. Obsurb - that's a good new word - what does it mean? Does it go with obtuse and obstinate and obscurantist and obsessive and obstructive?
  6. Just unlucky then.
  7. I know The Montpelier is not strictly ED but it is close and has been mentioned in other threads. My partner and I went there yesterday afternoon for the first time for a quiet drink, we went up to the bar to order our drinks and the chap behind the bar asked us where we were sitting and told us he would bring our drinks over. We sat down and waited, and waited, and waited. After a few minutes, (the barrel might have needed changing, he might have been in the middle of another order) I caught the barman's eye and he looked over at our empty table. He came out from behind the bar and started clearing empty tables without having poured our beers. So we left. What was the point? If he didn't want to bring the drinks over why didn't he pour them as we arrived and let us go to our table with them. After all the order of a pint and a half of San Miguel was hardly complicated! Has anyone had similar or dissimilar experiences? Were we just unlucky?

Personally I'd rather we were 4th in the world in our good treatment of our pensioners or 4th in the world in our treatment of cancer sufferers. How must it feel to be told that a member of your family is going to die within months because there is not enough money for their drugs and then read that it is being mooted that gold medallists might receive bonuses of up to ?20,000.

Come on now Louisa - I see where some of your earlier comments were coming from, but these comments are totally ridiculous. NO-ONE is putting the shoplifter on a pedastal - in fact only Snorky said that there might be legitimate reasons for theft if the thief was desperate. I am sure that somewhere in law is the concept of 'reasonable force' and it sounds from the OP that more than reasonable force was used in this case. And as for the comment that middle class people are trying to destroy the area - words fail me! I have lived in ED for nearly 20 years and although I don't celebrate the opening of every shop, the place has far more to offer than it did then. Why would anyone wish to destroy the area they live in? The influx of new people is changing the area not destroying it - the changes may not suit you, but you are not the only person living in ED.
  10. There are Wetherspoons and there are Wetherspoons. The thought of a 'Kentish Drovers' in ED doesn't fill me with much pleasure, but both 'The Imperial' and 'The George' in Exeter are extremely nice pubs and I would be happy to see something similar to them in ED.
  11. In Russia and I expect in other countries too, the shop staff (including the security staff) have any losses from shoplifting taken from their wages - this installs in them a good reason for watching out for shoplifters and being rather heavy-handed if apprehending them. I am sure that this policy does not apply to Somerfield.
  12. How do you know that the finger pointing is unfounded? Why should people come onto a forum such as this to make a complaint that is unfounded? As a promoter you have a vested interest in these events.
  13. "I should point out that such unfounded and unresearched accusations are libelous." Sounds a bit defensive to me - are you going to sue people for wanting to get a good nights sleep?
  14. Perhaps I'll add that they are OK if accompanied by a doctor's note.
  15. Local ED currency a good idea - it works in Totnes so why not here? Apart from that I'd like to rule the skies and make it hot all day every day (at least 32 degrees) and if that is too hot for you then you can move somewhere cooler. Then make a beach on Dulwich Park lake - with a cocktail bar and a selection of ice cold world beers. And a total ban on ANYONE wearing sunglasses indoors - you do not look cool you look a tosser!
  16. Someone I know was contesting a late night opening of a bar elsewher in London and one of the points raised was that the majority of the noise came as people left the bar and were no longer in it's jurisdiction, and the outcome was that the noise levels would be reviewed after 3 months and the late-night license rescinded if there was a high number of complaints about the noise - even though the bar could not be legally responsible for it.

Must say that I've not noticed that Forest Hill Road has fallen slap bang in the middle of Hackney or Shoreditch without letting any of its residents know. (sorry I've bitten!) I've been to the FHT once - that was enough - I scarpered back down to the Herne sharpish! But then I like to enjoy myself without disturbing other people.
  20. Surely this is a matter of choice - if someone makes an informed choice that they would like to use an alternative therapy then they should be allowed too. It would appear from Jamma that there should only be one way - Jamma's way. Science has been proven wrong many times in the past, as new knowledge is accumulated old practices die out - it used to be doctors that used leeches (now back in fastion I believe), it used to be doctors that bled people, etc etc etc - because at the time their knowledge was limited. Science is NOT infallible. It might be one of the best choices, but who is Jamma to insist that there should be no other choice.
  21. I've heard reports of similar in Croydon.......
  22. LuvPeckham - that describes how I have felt for the past couple of days to the tee. I have been a bit stressed so put the distended stomach (looks like I am about 7 months pregnant) down to that - but 'movements' I've had are exactly as described, and hot water bottle was needed yesterday. I will go out now and get some live yoghurt to see if that helps.
  23. Have to say that I am suprised - I have always had good service at the Herne, although not eaten there since Christmas. Perhaps the bad service has co-incided with Rob the manager moving to the Palmeston - he always seemed to be on top of things.

It's being suggested on Talk Sport that she is should be made a Dame - after all they did it for Kelly Holmes!
  25. Can't remember if this has been mentioned or not, but a good veggie option if you do Sunday lunch is nice - something that we can have all the trimmings with and not a completely different alternative - I like veggie sausages and mash but not instead of a roast. A couple of the best I had were risotto balls and aubergine galette, but a good nut roast does do the trick.
