  1. Just try and sort it out if you are out of the country AND in your vehicle as your tax runs out. You cannot renew it more than a certain number of days in advance so basically you are stuffed. We renewed ours on-line abroad and luckily weren't caught between Dover and ED and the new disc was in the mail when we got back - I can see now just how lucky we were.
  2. Mmmmmm - I was trying NOT to come to that conclusion - hey ho another door closes and another door doesn't open!!!!
  3. Like the Coldplay analogy - agree that slagging off THE Pixies is tantamount to something really dreadful. ED - I think Muse - started off small and rather provincial even and now shouts from the highest hills, (as I write I hear them as a ringtone downstairs................)
  4. Any idea what sort of clientele she is aiming for?
  5. Just walked past and had a look. The opening times on the window are actually the old MagDALA opening times - new ones aren't up yet. Have to say that it doesn't look quite my thing although I will give it a try. The bar front has been wallpapered in a flowerly brown and white pattern and all the old back of the bar has been ripped out and replaced with tiles that look a bit like someone's kitchen and not many bottles of spirits, although the pumps are still there. Instead of the high tables and stools in the front there are what (to be honest) look a bit like furniture from a school canteen, whilst further back are those little wicker chairs with cushions (but no table). I couldn't see as far as the back room though. It most certainly does NOT look the place for a pint or two after work - but I will give it a try.
  6. On the other hand a Saudi man did try and buy me from my mother when I was 14!
  7. I've lived in Turkey, and always been treated beautifully by Turkish men so what I didn't like was the assumption that Turkish men are sleazy and out to get western women. For whatever reason English women have a reputation in countries such as Turkey and Egypt, where it is still rare for the local women to go out without their men and exceedingly rare for women to get drunk. In some resorts young women on holiday ARE out to get laid, and without the cultural signals that we have it is possible that these men might mistake being young and 'summery' with being 'up for it'. Previous posts has suggested that a woman alone in Turkey would not be safe - I was just saying that depending on the resort and her demeanour she should be as safe there as anywhere. I hitched in Eastern Turkey and not had any trouble. If I was sitting alone in a bar obviously the worse for alcohol I may have had trouble.
  8. Mmmmmm Annasfield - I think you should use your imagination!
  9. Gobbing in the street especially big fruity ones outside my house - punishable by something very horrid!
  10. Isn't there Scummerfield for that?
  11. I like the Peckham cinema - however it's cheap and cheerful so you cannot expect art house attitudes from everyone there. Incidentally the worse cinema I've been to for people talking and leaving their mobiles on has been in the Ritzy in Brixton - maybe they thought it was a sub-titled film that it was OK. I've had a couple of complaints in the past at Peckham - loo's not great and once the film didn't actually start, but when approached nicely the staff have been really helpful (although forgetting to actually start the film wasn't that great!)
  12. You won't get hit on by men in Turkey if you don't look 'up for it' - they are not stupid, it also depends on the sort of resort you go to - obviously if there is a predominance of younger people it will have a different atmosphere to a more family resort. Try googling Kas on the Lycian coast - it is beautiful as is Kalkan - but a bit more going on in Kas. Also avoids Eurozone - however southern Italy is cheap even with the Euro.
  13. Whether or not the service in Threshers was friendly enough (and actually I thought it was) surely a member of staff in a shop - whatever the shop is, should have a certain amount of knowledge about the stock - so staff in an off-licence should really know about wine. The staff in Oddbins and (most) Majestics can recommend wines to go with certain meals and make suggestions - the most recent members of staff in Threshers couldn't.
  14. I thought that perhaps they are thinking of the price they could get for land so close to ED station - make a nice block of flats.
  15. I know I've moaned about this lot before but this time I am really really pissed off with them. After being told that I would be rung between 5.30 and 6.30 this evening for a nurse to talk to me, the phone rang at 5.12 when I was on the loo (sorry tmi) - it rang three times and stopped before I could reach it, and now I have to ring up again, and make yet another appointment for another telephone assessment!!! I was 'indisposed' at 5.12 so that I could spend the entire hour between 5.30 and 6.30 by my phone. AND no-one is even answering the phone at the practice now............. Is this really just an attempt to make it so hard to get an appointment with a doctor there that you just don't bother?
  16. It can't end in marriage but a civil partnership would be good - invite all the forumites and have a big party.
  17. I'm obviously far too old for it and its extremely loud music, however if it makes other people happy then who am I to whinge!
  18. Shopping in Waitrose is almost a pleasant experience - no matter what you think ???? - the choice is superior to any of the other supermarkets, and their own brand is priced on a par with others, and their wine selection is wider and more interesting than others.
  19. Jeez - I thought it was dreadful - they'd done a good job on the conversion but not even half price drinks couldn't persuade me to stay - although I did see bottles of Peroni being drunk which was tempting - but ugh!
  20. Snow makes me cry too - but not in the same way.............
  21. To make up for their 3 for 2 offer their wines have gone up and up in price, and similar wines can be got in Sainsburys for considerably less. Their choice was pretty bland too. If you go to Nicolas and buy non Nicolas branded wines you can get some good bargains, and there is also Oddbins in the village and a Magestic Wine Warehouse near West Dulwich which deliver. For something more special both Green and Blue and the East Dulwich Deli have some good choices.
  22. "I refuse to accept this fine. Inspection of the camera images reveals that there was not a single pedestrian or vehicle anywhere near my car at the time of the manoeuvre. In my mind what I did was perfectly safe, indeed I have never had an accident in over 10 years of driving. " So do you go through red lights when no-one else is around? I agree that some road rules seem pretty petty, but why should any rules apply to some and not to others?

  25. So what are the football watching options if the Magdala isn't one? CPT, EDT and The Vale? Are there any others?
