Little things you've found yourself wondering, after reading the EDF.

I might drag a friend along, because we are eating nearby later, but be nice to him!

Can we get back to posting about strange looking men following timid women down the road at night pulling a suitcase cos I'm bored with all the rioting stuff now. Time to move on guys, no revolution here, so get back to inanity now. -
Family Taekwondo Session - would anyone be interested?
LadyDeliah replied to LadyDeliah's topic in The Family Room Discussion
He generally doesn't take kids under 4, unless they have very good concentration, but if the parents were joining in, maybe it would be feasible to do something for younger children. If you want to ask him, his number is 07854 021 311 and the email is [email protected]. I'm sure if there was enough interest he'd be happy to do a class for younger kids. -
Hi, Daniel, our local Commonwealth silver medallist, has been looking to start a family TKD class, maybe on a Saturday, where parents can join in with their kids. Here is a link to the general thread for his classes in the what's on section. It would be easier than the general Adult class and probably only for an hour, rather than the longer adults session, but might be a nice way for parents to share something with their children. Would anyone be interested in a family TKD session? Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks guys

I wait with baited breath. May be some time coming. David, I thought better of you than that. Don't put words in my mouth (or words in my fingers?).

Why do you still beleive the rest of the police spin? Duggan had no criminal record, there is no evidence yet that the gun is his. The 'fact' that he fired on the police has been shown to be total BS. Let's see if he was also dragged out of the car and pinned down before he was shot, as claimed by someone close to his family. I told you that the police were not telling the truth. The fact that they failed to tell the truth caused the anger and resentment that resulted in the family and others protesting outside the police station. It was not a vigil, as claimed by some, it was a protest. The actions by the police then sparked the worst civil disobedience seen in this country for decades. How much of the shit being printed in the media, fed by police spin are you going to continue to swallow?

I agree with SF -
So let's look at the time of heavy handed policing and phusicaal punishment by teachers. The 1980's riots came about because of this, not because of an absence of this. The current harrssment by police in their stop and search policies of innocent, but profile-fitting, inner city youth has caused massive resentment. How about we try seeing if when the police and other agents of the state treat people with respect, they get more respect in return? Novel idea, but who knows, it might just work!

Lol, Mockney! That had me pissing myself. Lots of trite fascism out at the momement to choose from too!

Ok, so lets add homelessness and starvation to the list of reasons to run amok! Sensible forward thinking from the Daily Hate crew! -
I was in the Plough an hour ago and everything was quiet.

Camden, Ealing, Tower Bridge, West End all subject to rioting and looting now.

I liked the article. I didn't write it or slavishly agree with every point made.

I think this article is quite good in explaining the anger some people might be feeling, without justifying the way they have expressed it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/08/tottenham-riots-not-unexpected

No, MM, just predictable responses to stimuli. Easy peasy really.

The initial riot outside the police station which was a reaction to the death of Duggan and the alledged assault by the police on a young woman. The further rioting later on was reportedly mainly angry young men. The filling of cars with loot appears to have been mainly older people not actually connected to the battles with the police. So I would suggest there were three sets of people in all of this with three sets of general motivations.

Sorry if my cynicism re: the police is seen as encouraging rioting - that is not what my intention is. I have been involved in protests and even direct action and have seen the actions of the police first-hand in those situations. Plus I know someone who is close to the family of Duggan and the stories in the press regarding his death did not correlate with what was seen by witnesses. It now seems some of my cynicism was not unjustified. MP, thank you for your very thoughtful post. I feel that you have highlighted the problem very well. These situations don't just come out of the blue. Anyone with half a brain can predict the circumstances that can result in the kind of rioting we have seen over the weekend. It's not about being a wooly liberal or appologist. It's about understanding human nature and triggers. The government were warned by many people that this could happen, but they continued with their cuts and continued to let the bankers and other elites to carry on as normal. I feel resentful. I am unlikely to go and set fire to someone's car as I have a means of expressing my opinions and know how to lobby decision makers if I so chose. The under-educated and societally disconnected youths who went to the police station for answers on Saturday have expressed their resentment differently.

So are you saying he shot the cop with a cop gun? None of the police said that. Why would the bullet be police issue if Duggan supposedly shot the cop?

Here we are: Even though I am not keen on the Torygraph! Is anyone beginning to see that this was a pile of crap spun out by the police yet?
