  1. 1. Eating vegetables with enthusiasm can help you get your end away. 2. If you get all get defensive about going to a vegetarian restaurant, you might be a homophobe, or perhaps a closet homosexual. Right on both counts. You learn fast.
  2. Love your insights Snoozequeen! The thing I really can't work out is why a certain kind of straight male (for they almost always are straight men) get all twitchy and defensive when you mention vegetarianism. As if eating meat is somehow essential and manly and virile... yeah, how virile a pot belly and chronic heart disease is. Almost as virile as the process of buying a chicken from a supermarket, or ordering a steak. Wow, what a man you have to be to eat a steak! Personally I find those who show empathy and respect for animals are far more courageous and intelligent than those who just brainlessly say "Yum! I like meat" without thinking about the consequences of their lifestyle.
  3. Places like Franklin's and the Palmerston with their lack of provision for veggies don't get my custom - ever. Nor that of my vegetarian friends. They are missing out by failing to provide for us. Many of the places that offer a dull single veggie option don't get my business either, as I would feel cheated! Don't forget there are a lot of us veggies about. Judging by the numbers of veggies who post on here complaining about lack of options locally it seems pretty clear to me that a decent veggie place would not struggle for business. Other similar parts of London have them ( e.g. Camden, Hammersmith, Stoke Newington, Chiswick). East Dulwich is a bit of an oddity lacking one.
  4. I have also been wondering about this. Given ED's demographic you'd imagine there'd be at least one veggie place. Crystal Palace has two, even Streatham has one! Anyone reading this who's thinking of opening one locally PLEASE DO! Am so tired of having to go elsewhere or put up with a solitary dull option involving ricotta or mushrooms.
  5. Sounds quite nice! Do you have the recipe Lozzyloz? Must confess, although I am a vegetarian I have never tried 'Korean mung bean pancake.' I must be in the minority...
  6. Lordship Lane is a bit behind the times when it comes to good veggie places. However I tried Hisar's new little cafe place the other day (next to the restaurant) and to my surprise they had some great veggie stuff - including delicious falafels. Am still waiting for that veggie-friendly Vietnamese we were promised (fingers crossed)...
  7. That was my inspiration actually! I wanted to give Penge a platform.
  8. There was a young lady from Penge...
  9. I think Penge is funny because it sounds a bit like flange.
  10. Margaret is the best thing in it I reckon. Just for her withering stares. Does anyone else agree that if Margaret were an animal she would be an owl?
  11. Boris taking up Ken's baton? Sounds like a political sex scandal.
  12. To all those who want more pubs like the Castle... move to Penge! Lots of horrible old boozers there with net curtains and blokes in tracksuits talking about fighting. You'll love it.
  13. Went once and thought it was beyond the pale. Dusty, dirty, old-fashioned and generally depressing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can it be transformed into our new veggie-friendly Vietnamese
  14. Lots of dog poo round here, I notice it myself. I reckon chavs are mostly to blame. As usual.
  15. The Castle? Ugh, that place is AWFUL
  16. Michael is the worst kind of snobby, sulky, supercilious over-indulged public school prat. Had he been born to a poor family he'd be stacking shelves somewhere. However his privilege has given him the false impression that he deserves to succeed. I agree with Margaret's appraisal when she was told he read Classics at Edinburgh. "Edinburgh isn't what it used to be." Spot on.
  17. Because they want you to buy another one in 4 years' time
  18. That gym will be shut by the eand of the year I reckon. If I was getting that for ?50 I would feel ripped off
  19. Reminds me of Blackheath - genteel during the week but come Fri/Sat nights it's overrun with lairy chavs looking for a classy night out. Ugh!
  20. Anyone suspect this trees thing has a whiff of Zac Goldsmith about it? Everything Boris has done so far is totally out of character and looks like a sort of party election broadcast for Cameron's New Conservatives put together by people behind the scenes. Am waiting for him to slip up... it can't be long now.
  21. I suppose that the difference is that most gay men don't scream the place down while you're trying to have a quiet drink. Unless "Wow" by Kylie comes on.
  22. As a bloke I would beg to differ Brendan. I think my dress sense is pretty excellent. Ok, I admit it, I am gay. However you do see some pretty fine looking metrosexuals around these parts. PS I wouldn't make a bad Jane either
  23. I went to the EDT when it was a sort of pizza place a while ago and it was great - lovely food in a nice atmosphere with great, friendly waitresses. I can't understand all the criticism.
  24. Agreed with everything you said Dave, until this bit: >Make individual schools more accountable to the communities they serve, and make a positive effort to allow all parents a voice, and the majority will prevail. What with league tables, faith schools and so on, I think schools are bending over backwards to try to serve their communities. They have to, to get bums on seats. It seems that the education system is being run as if the parents were paying customers and of course, the "customer's always right." Well no actually, the customer is always self-interested and the way it is now is a perfect example of our individualistic society. I think we need to shift a bit of power back to the teachers, away from the parents. They are the ones who have to do the work after all! And they are the ones (the good teachers, at least) who have everyone's best interests in mind. Not just darling little Fenella who really is so gifted and deserves more attention than anyone else.
  25. If you do that you end up with a rabid underclass of underprivileged, unemployable kids causing mayhem in schools and on the streets. We all end up paying for the havoc this causes through increased crime and taxation. Do you seriously believe that the parents of children like these are empowered by 'choice'? That they give two hoots about where their children are going to school? Many don't even care whether they go to school or not!
