  1. Well I don't think I have it wrong. The aim of this campaign was (very openly) to starve these papers of the advertising revenue that "they need to survive". So the papers would either shut down or change their tune in order to win advertisers back. Now it may not have worked out that way, and it may just be that a couple of companies have decided for their own (probably business led) reasons to pull advertising. Now I am sure the campaign see this as a massive coup, but make no mistake, the initial (unrealistic) goal was to close the papers down. I imagine they have changed their tune a bit since June, when they realised it wasn't going to work that way.
  2. Guy who has done some tattoos for me lost his 19 year old little brother. Unbelievable.

Bit like boycotting companies that traded in apartheit South Africa back in the day. But it is not a rationale of the intended outcome of the campaign, which is to gag. Just to be very clear by the way, I hate these rags and would love to see them change their tune (or cease to exist) as much as you would. But I agree with DaveR about this campaign being an attempt to censor (which as you say, will fail because they'll get revenue from other companies, but that's beside the point). In my opinion the extreme left are every bit as mental and unpleasant as the extreme right. Neither have views that belong in a decent society.

If you read > the rest of my post, you will see my rationale for > why it isn't gagging. Okay, your post in full said "Nonsense - this is not gagging. DM will still continue even if John Lewis pulls funding. But it does mean that those of us who want to support retailers with a better ethical track-record don't find ourselves indirectly funding the Daily Heil." So you don't want companies that you like to use funding the DM (and Co). Fine. But that isn't even remotely the same as a "rationale for why it isn't gagging". The whole point of the campaign is to starve these papers of funding (which "they need to survive") until they stop saying things the campaign doesn't like. If that isn't a direct attempt to gag, then I don't know what is. Although our politics are not entirely the same, I increasingly look to DaveR and Quids' posts on here for some common sense. Ever since the rise of Corbyn and Momentum, I feel I want to disassociate myself with "the left" (whatever that even means these days). Maybe I am a cenerist with lefty ideals, or maybe I'm a lefty with a dose of cynicism and realism, I don't know. But I do know that some of the left wing people I've been encountering this past year, have been some of the most unpleasant people I've ever come across. Not aiming that at anyone on this thread by the way, it's just an observation on how I am seeing things.

The stated intention is for these papers to be starved of income, and so have to close or change their tune. How is that not an attempt to gag? Try to dress it up to fit your moral compass all you like, but the whole point it to cut off their income unless they start talking how you want them to talk.
  7. When this Stop Funding Hate thing started (After the referendum I think. Or at least that's when I first saw it) I thought it all sounded great, because some of the stuff being printed was, for me, way over the line. But having read this thread, I must say DaveR has convinced me that it's not a good thing at all. Makes me think of the old "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". Shouldn't lose sight of that.

I remember him telling that one on Radio 4 some years ago (definitely before 2009, because I remember listening to it in an old flat I left in 2009).

Fair enough. I don't like the Rufus Wainwright version. I love the Jeff Buckley version, but the gospel feel of Cohen's original is wonderful (IMO).

Suzanne, and (over covered as it may be) Hallelujah. And it's only covered so much because it's a great song.
  11. I see Scarlett Moffatt is to appear on I'm a celebrity. And tabloids are saying this could put her gogglebox place in danger. Which would be a shame, she's one of the stars.

I heard him on R4 the day after that. Yep, scary. Although to Fox's OP. There is always loads of coverage of the US election. Perhaps not quite this much, because the media don't usually get so many headlines from outragious statements. But it's always all over the news leading in to it.
  14. I love Leon and his wife. She puts him well in his place.
  15. I heard the American woman named Gina Miller on the radio today talking about the abuse she'd received from people thinking she was the Gina Miller that had brought the case. Some of it was unbelievable.

  18. The Sundays did a very nice cover of WH in the late 90s.
  19. Yes, and the government will implement it. Once parliament have voted on the details. You could find 100 leave voters and ask them all what exactly they want from brexit, and you'd get a range of answers. It's not as simple as "right we're off".
  20. You should come along to a Dulwich Jam (first Wednesday of every month at Southwark Sports Club, Dulwich Common).
