France has a generous benefit system when compared to the UK. With the Tories introducing JSA in the mid 90s I would have thought this reduced unemployment because unemployment benefit which you could claim for 12 months became 6 months on JSA. I suspect the real unemployment figures are broadly similar between the two countries. The OECD figures do not take into account the difference in these figures nor does it take into the economic inactive total for the productivity figures. Not only are the French productive it could be argued they have a more balanced and sustainable economy than the UK. It is untrue that Carnell wanted this debate into a discussions about Thatcher. This was accusation you had made earlier in order to cover yourself from people discovering your right wing agenda. You've been outed Huguenot!

Resistance is futile, maxxi, as I will continue the m&s theme. As for the other sponsoring fashion companies they didn't appear on my radar when I first done my research on the Guardian four years ago. Oh yes, I now deem Versace, Dior, McCartney, Lagerfeld, H&M, Moschino, Reiss, McQueen, Sarah Burton, Marc Jacobs and the colour Orange unworthy! This remind me when American Apparel became Guardian's label of the year. Talk about kiss of death.

Hi James, Over the last 12 months I've been using the Lewisham Library services and they reviewed their services since July last year with two rounds of public consultations and briefings for each library. What I don't like is the lack of information given by Southwark and this is likely to result in meaningless consultations. At least with Lewisham they gave library usage numbers, library issues and cost of refurbishments on their briefings. Are we also going to be subjected to a weighted survey? One of the main problems with Southwark is the lack of quality books and ordering books through the inter library loan is ridiculously expensive at ?2 when compared to 50p by Lewisham. Even trying to get the latest copy of Which magazine can be incredibly difficult or just impossible. UDT

Still no evidence that the Tories had a full employment policy, eh Hueguenot? Now who's a naughty boy then? It will be a long time before you will ever prove me wrong.
-
Huguenot, in one post you were claiming that the Tories had a full employment policy yet in your last post it's clear they didn't.

Happy days... As long as they > don't keep any of the staff eh! The branch was too small to sell whole lobsters. I don't think Waitrose will want to take over the Co-op in LL due to its size. Where would the meat & fish counter go? A better place for Waitrose is Rye Lane where once John Lewis had a presence.

Transferring assets to the community would require a leap of faith by Southwark. However, I do share your point about some community groups being anti-democratic. I'm involved in two community groups where in one I've experienced some odd behaviours. And there is a local community forum where the admin would ban posters because their views were incompatible to his.

tbf, I've had problems with the Waitrose store in Croydon shortly after it was converted from a Somerfield. The woman behind the fish counter, obviously Somerfield ex-staff, was reluctant to give me two knobs of butter and didn't wrapped the fish to the usual standard I was accustomed to. Co-op & Waitrose owns their farms unlike most supermarkets.

James, http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/news/Article/1052028/interview-hazel-blears-/ http://www.nlgn.org.uk/public/2008/speech-by-rt-hon-hazel-blears-mp-a-new-deal-for-local-devolution/ How things work in Southwark Council still remains a mystery to me. For example, do you think Southwark Council whould have welcome the transfer of assets, like a swimming pool, to the community? I very much doubt it. I don't know the lib dem view on empowering local authorities. I suspect there will be subtle differences between the various political parties. UDT

So the Tories are going to save us from PS excesses. A problem they've started. It's a shame the programme didn't point out the slashing of Britain's manufacturing sectors under Thatcher's short sighted policies. How progressive are the current Tory's policies compared to Labour? Not much really apart from the way the Tories are putting into place their ideologies. Labour were also intent in cutting PS jobs and pensions. During the credit crunch crisis Gordon Brown devalued sterling so that Britain could compete in the export market. Decentralisation started under the last Labour government. Did you read John Healey's sub national review by any chance? Do you recall announcements by Hazel Blears about giving people more power in the community? The Tory's Big Society and Localism are all eye catching headlines but they simply continued what Labour had started. Do you remember DIUS? UDT

It seems you are only intent in attacking my good name. If you want me to take you seriously I suggest you read all of the M&S, Sainsbury & Tesco results. Then count the ones where the Guardian has promoted, not just life & style section, and report back to me. That's 30,000 articles to read and categorised. No cheating please.
