David Starkey - A profound cultural change ?

I think the main problem is the lack of understanding of West Indian culture and language on your part. No website/wiki is a direct substitute for real life experience and there is a conflict on this forum between those who rely on third party information and my real life direct experiences. Once you've heard proper St Lucian Patois then there is no contest. Unfortunately anything West Indian seems to get labelled as Jamaican and this has been going on for decades. Hence why people like yourself are totally clueless when it comes to West Indian culture and language. I suspect most people here can't tell the difference between a Jamaican accent and a non-Jamaican West Indian one. -

BTW, I'll be cooking West Indian Soup on Sunday, and for those who don't know any better let's say Jamaican Soup! How to Speak Patois for Travelers -

Both my parents are West Indians and have visited family in several of the Caribbean islands. David, can I ask what are your personal experience of the West Indian dialect? The heidelberg press analogy is utter nonsense. -

My Uncle speaks Patois so I know. -
Raising stamp duty was designed to curb the property bubble. It didn't work as the root problem was supply. Doubt if LVT would have any effect.

Katie, you're absolutely right, I should have included the right wing thickies too! @Loz, There are complex issues surrounding the recent riots. I'm afraid the dumbing down of these complexities and subtleties doesn't really deserve an answer until the question has been put in context to who is saying what. After viewing Starkey on Newsnight it become clear that he really was out of touch with today's young people. For a start Patois is broken French and have no origins in Jamaica whatsoever as the country have been occupied by the British and the Spanish. -
Another Tory showing their true colours. And to think this person is teaching kids as well. The Tory party isn't exact an advert for political correctiveness and these days workers lose their jobs for saying much less.

No, they're speaking through experience, and seems there are a number of parallel issues which needs deeper thought. Weirdly, there are right wing nutters who thinks the riots was about youngster getting their free pair of trainers. You won't prevent future riots by disregarding the psychology of crowds -

Either > way you'd pay very little or no land value tax. It's the same old crass assumption used in the Council tax and rates policies before. I'd imagine there are lots of wealthy people that have chosen to rent instead. One of the biggest problems relating to council tax/rates is that only a minority pay their way and for some pay a disproportionately part of their income. LVT does nothing to address these matters. > It would be easy and cheap to administer and there > is no way to evade or avoid it. > > I'm trying to advocate not in addition to all the > taxes we have at the moment but as a possible > alternative - I don't have all the answers but am > simply raising it as a possibility. If we want to > make Britain a fairer and more equal society I > think a LVT would be one such method. The Lib Dems are in favour of reforming the Council Tax to one involving the ability to pay. In view of the Poll tax riots, reforming the present system is a political hot potatoe. I can't see LVT ever being implemented.

Not just early difficulties but also major flaws such as the ability to pay based on income and feeling penalised because you've chosen to live in a particular area.

The land tax, as DC as described it, will effectively create rich and poor areas as not all home owners are wealthy in terms of income. Some of the poorest people in the land are home owners. Trapped by high mortgages and unable to claim benefits. With the recent riots, I think it's important to create a cohesive society.

Southwark and Greenwich Council to Evict Looters
Undisputedtruth replied to Ridgley's topic in The Lounge
Knee jerk reactions to complex issues and above all a tremendous waste of money. It seems Southwark & Greenwich Council have shown the same level of thoughtfulness as the rioters did themselves. http://www.lgcplus.com/briefings/services/housing/planning/tough-talk-on-evicting-rioters-unlikely-to-be-realised/5033738.article -
I grew up around the Brayards Road area and there's nothing to fear unless you're living next door to me. Just like any place in London you'll need to keep your wits. UDT

Huguenot, I'm not saying the rioters are innocent. Rather that some/most do not have a stake in society and that the tough sentencing, just throws good money after bad, doesn't solve this problem.
-
Really Loz, there have been 6 posts or more on bankers in this thread alone. Moving on, would tough sentencing on our youths reinforce their beliefs that they are unlikely to be treated fairly in society?

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/camila-batmanghelidjh-caring-costs-ndash-but-so-do-riots-2333991.html No one knows more about youths than Camila Batmanghelidjh. She has worked closely with them for a number of years. And if we're to learn the lessons from the recent riots then it certainly worth hearing what she has to say.

@katie1997, The rioting saddens me and my sympathies goes out to those affected by their actions.
