Most people don't understand how government works and most discussions tend to be values orientated rather than getting to the root of the problem.

@BrandNewGuy, How? Cuts to EMA. Increase in tuition fees. Lack of employment opportunities.

Absolutely, I fear the youths of today faces a bleak future. I wouldn't blame labour for this as some of their policies were about social inclusion. Can't say that about the Tories though.

I suspect the reasons behind the riots are multifaceted. For example cuts to EMA, increase in tuition fees, ethnic minorities being disproportionately affected by the cuts, lack of employment opportunities, poor handling over the recent shooting by police & IPPC. and many more. I always felt social unrest was going to breakout at some point. Especially with the Tories in power. In my memory, I have never known such hatred of the government like the ones from the youths of today.

This is unprecedented times. There is no place here for black humour while peoples's iives, livelihoods and property are all in danger.

PM chairing COBRA meeting tomorrow morning. It wouldn't surprise me if the army was called in.

BBC live text reports disturbance in the Tesco East Dulwich Road branch. East Dulwich is now on the riot map. Time to bring in the army?

This is much worse than the Peckham riots in 1981 when Currys used to be on the corner of Rye Lane and Peckham High Street.
-
Unbelievable, I can smell the smoke from the Rye Lane fire in my kitchen. I live ten minutes away. Helicopters hovering nearby. I think the fire is under control as the thick smoke has stopped. Wrong info, I can still see the smoke from my kitchen window.

For avoidance of confusion the Guardian video link arrived into my email account and was not supplied by a fellow forumite member. Two real life individuals affected by the unfair Tory intervention on public sector renumerations. It shows the extent of today's inequality in Britain.

Have I wasted 40 years?
Undisputedtruth replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Nothing shocked me than the winter of discontent but that is all in the past. However, gloom is a strong possibility if the Tory's economic policy gamble doesn't work. Going back to the 1920s, there were general strikes, huge unemployment, corrupt politicians and stock markets in turmoil. I'm not sure if journalist and police were well behaved. No one seems to learn the lessons of the South Sea Company as the financial markets keeps crashing on a regular basis. The heart of the problem is that you can't change human nature. Especially where greed is concern. -
You know where Dover is, Katie. *UDT waves bye bye*

The Guardian article gives further explanation to how woman, especially ethnic minorities, are discriminated and why they end up working in the public sector. http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/video/2011/jul/01/women-public-sector-strikes-video?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3486 I was planning to stay away from the drawing room but I was asked this evening to put the above information on the forum by a fellow forumite. BTW I have met Zita two years ago and she is very knowledgeable on equality. UDT

How can we be so sure that the police can fully investigate the case if there are alleged payments made to police officers (corruption) issues? -
More like 14% more expensive.

@acm, It seems you Googling your case throughout this discussion. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/is-it-ok-to-use-oem-windows-on-your-own-pc-dont-ask-microsoft/1561 The above link gives background history to the licensing arrangement for windows OEM software. Even computing magazines today suggest using OEM windows software to hobbyist and I think MS needs to get their own house in order before prosecuting anyone for breaking their terms and conditions. Most hobbyist takes the view that it's a grey area and even MS own staff recommends using OEM software. Again, the Product Key Card is another red Herring not worthy of discussion, and another marketing nonsense by MS. Rose's original supplier wss a shop that sells office equipment. They don't manufacture computers I'm afraid. She had a Toshiba and so it's likely they would have arrived installed with the OEM software. Pricing for the AMD Llanos were released in May. The Llanos offers better multitasking, energy saving features and multi-media performances than the Intel i3 chips. Although i3 chips offers better performance in certain areas, most people wouldn't notice it while the Llanos give performance boost to where it matters the most. Rose had a budget for ?500 and a Llano system was definitely doable. Back in March AM demonstrated a Llano system beating the i5 one. I'm not profiting from this either acm. However, I was unware there was a windows hobbyist version but then again it's not widely available anywhere as most hobbyist usually buys the OEM versions. But since Rose has bought her laptop, it is all water under the bridge or perhaps dead Puppies under a bridge! -
@kleinhond, All my posts on the Nunhead Forum were reasonable I'm afraid. It doesn't matter though, because the facts of the matter, is that your little game is up at the Nunhead Forum. I know many long term members want to see you go. No doubt about it and it's shameful that you're showing last year's thread to justify your existence. The main reason why you banned me is because I did not support your case on the P12 bus and pinch points near where you live on Ivydale Road. Nearly all of your PMs centred on the Ivydale Road discussion I'm afraid. Oddly enough, you seemed to have issues when I supported Cllr Hamvas on the Ivydale Road issues and hinted at banning me for doing so. @katie1997, "I've seen what Quids had written but changed his mind later." here's what I've written. Please show me where I said you had seen Quid's pre-edit? I don't think I'll be responding to your posts in future as you seemed intent in giving snide remarks. Other forum members told me they had the same issues with you. @marmora man, It's a shame you didn't tell me poor about your interesting political beliefs. Most of them are up my street and some are not. Apart from Huguenot, I have not intentionally insulted anyone and my posts have been reasonable.

@acm, Talking about muddying the water. OEM software are aimed towards systems builders. So whoever built PR's laptop can be defined as a system builder and is allowed to install OEM MS on their machines. On the distribution side of things, for the purpose of this discussion, is a red Herring. In the next few months I'll be building my own system and so I would be classed as a system builder and be allowed to install OEM MS software. OEM MS software can be bought freely on the Amazon website without entering into top level distribution partnership with MS. Are you really a consultant, acm? You don't seem to have an understanding of OEM or the new AMD Llano APUs. -
Well thanks for now letting know that I was banned after several weeks. I know many can't trust your comments and hardly anyone posts on your forum these days. Is this a reflection on you, KH? Loads of mutterings about your removal.

Should ED make a stand and boycott News Corporations NOTW
Undisputedtruth replied to georgegarrett's topic in The Lounge
@frankito, I guess it depends on how you read the Southwark News. I just love the in the dock section to see if there is a person I know. If only Southwark News could also publish their online nicknames. I don't think boycotting the NOTW would be fair to employees who had nothing to do with the scandal. But as this case is truly shocking then throwing the guilty in jail is the only sensible recourse IMO. On the other hand, News International feels they have the ability to select the next government and this is enough reason to boycott the papers. -

Not really, for example if you bought Windows 7 OEM then you cannot transfer it to another machine though it is possible if you state your case to MS. If you bought a non OEM version of Windows 7 then you can transfer it to another machine. In the case of PR I suspect she has an OEM Office version and also could be issues with 16 32bits machines.
