Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
Michael Palaeologus replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It does seem that when the Forum agrees with James, well that demonstrates the voice of East Dulwich. When the Forum does not agree with James, it is simply a useful sounding board that many do not use. Is there any supermarket development (other than Waitrose) that James Barber would support? It would seem not. A 24 hours Coop seems like a useful addition. -

Hipsters are rife in Berlin. On my last flight back, there were some actually on the plane. Look, we all know our history.

If you set targets, you help rapists. Discuss.
Michael Palaeologus replied to legalbeagle's topic in The Lounge
It isnt just the targets. Bad targets, unrealistic, politically driven targets set by people who are not going to ask questions about how the are achieved is part of the problem. Targets are simply a means to an end. The provision of an effective service at an acceptable cost, as defined by certain metrics. The real problem is that government starts to see the metrics as defining the effectiveness of the service. They dont, the effectiveness of the service is defined by individual outcomes. These are often subjective eg how did I feel about my treatment at hospital X? Treasury doesnt like subjective measures. The bigger problem is culture. When a culture deems that the rape victim is of less importance than the statistics, there is a significant cultural problem. -
England played well enough to win the game. The lucky try was a lucky try but that is the nature of competitive sport; and after all, God in an Englishman.

It'll be fine, matures with age. Mine has a "Best by" date of July last year. At least there is no horse in it. Hopefully.

Oh Mick Mac, come on! So far your every prediction of England losing in this tournament have been somewhat wide of the mark. Come on, grit your teeth ... :)

Re-reading some of the coverage, is does seem that much of it is focused on the Pistorius the Hero not being the Hero he seemed. Part of that story is his dumping of his long term girlfriend to replace her with a blonde, model who was a media celebrity in RSA. He is being positioned as a gun obsessed, abuser with anger management issues. Ms Steenkamp has been positioned as a beautiful and intelligent woman who did good work with kids living in deprived circumstances. Of course these pictures are simplifications, but this is the British popular media we are talking about. They rarely do complex. The media and celebrities feed off each other, in life and death. However, we do know her name.

What Loz said. It is just not possible to care about every single separate murder that occurs. As a generality, yes, we are horrified, The vast majority do not get reported. Those that do are those that have additional aspects that make them "newsworthy". The dreadful rape and murder of the 23 year old woman (un-named in media coverage) sadly did not generate media coverage, it became worldwide news when sections of Indian society finally revolted against the routine harassment and assault of Indian women and the uncaring reaction of officialdom. It was only then that we knew of the case.

"Reeva Steenkamp shot dead by disabled boyfriend who is now charged with her murder". Why haven't we read that headline? Because up until a few days ago, few people in the UK had heard about Reeva Steenkamp. We had heard about her disabled boyfriend because he happened to be a Olympic and Paralympic athlete of note, and we did host the Olympics and Paralympics last year. He was on the telly allot, she was not. Of course it is about celebrity, if they were an attractive but unknown couple, there would have been no reporting in the UK at all. Tragic though it is, why would we be interested or even care? It is not possible to be interested in or care about everybody who dies in tragic circumstances on any given day. We care about the people we know, we are interested in the people we know of. Otherwise, not. That is not to say that we do not care about the fact of a multiplicity of tragic murders in RSA and other countries, but in the abstract not personal sense. As Otta says, if the genders were reversed, then the same media coverage would apply. There are plenty of examples of the pornification of violence toward women. I dont think this is one of them.
-
To be fair, all the coverage I have seen gives her name ... and the fact that she was Pistorius' girlfriend. I had never heard of her before she was shot dead by a more famous athlete.

I may just have to get some of these, again. http://www.solatio.co.uk/

Looking at France vs Wales, the Italy triumph seems less remarkable. England should be this French side and should beat Italy. Wales are not that great at the moment. So, the winner of tomorrows game should take the championship.

A great evening. The 2 Newbies were sat chatting away to each other, before the rest of us got there, four of us having been detained in the pub, ahem. Eight people sat down to eat. I thought that the food was really very good, big portions and great value. No Mick Mac, No Gingerbeer. We were collectively bereft, briefly. Next Curry Club meeting on Thursday 7th of March. Lets try the Dulwich Tandoori http://www.dulwichtandoori.co.uk/ Meet for drinks at the Draft House at 7.15pm and then Dulwich Tandoori at 8.00pm. -

Some interestig stats. Over the last 2 years we have visited the following restaurants: Mirash - 5 times Swadesh - 4 times Surma - 3 times Jaflong - 3 times Tandoori Nights - 3 times Veer Zara - 2 times Curry Cabin - 1 time Ganapati - 1 time Omrith - 1 time Indian Mischief - 1 time but only 2 people turned up so we didnt bother Dulwich Tandoori - 0 times. No idea why. NB - NO RESTAURANTS SHOULD CLAIM THAT THEY ARE THE "CURRY CLUBS FAVOURITE" ON THE BASIS OF THESE STATS. THE CHOICE OF RESTAURANT. MONTH BY MONTH, IS ENTIRELY UNSCIENTIFIC. What we have learned: There is no "Best", everybody has their favourite People say they want to go to restaurants that are further afield, but generally dont turn out if it isnt on Lordship Lane Curry Club regulars are generally carniverous. With a few honourable exceptions. Looks like we need to give Dulwich Tandoori and Curry Cabin more of a go Veer Zara is our least favourite - too much salt and curry powder Mirash is my favourite, which is why we have been there 5 times. I also like Tandoori Nights -
