Sorry to resurrect this thread but I went to the Roxy Bar and Cinema yesterday to see "The Adventures of Flannery - a portrait of Cathal Coughlan" In one of the interview pieces he talks about this woman walking up and down LL in Dulwich - I was as surprised to hear LL mentioned in a cinema doc as I was anything else

Come on snorky that is a lame effort Most people who read my posts know i have no love for the number of cars in london or estate agents but sean's neighbour is so bang out of order its untrue. -
Did the card cloning debate turn into a slanging match?? OK - at the start of that thread someone (who is decidedly not of the "perfect liberal" persuasion) gave you (shaggy) a bit of a facile argument saying how easy it should be to spot a tampered slot - but it's been pretty much a simple litany of unlucky people detailing how they think they have been done - it certainly hasn't been hijacked Even this thread hasn't been "hijacked" in my opinion - the OP, as you said, made a good point and if the thread did get a bit silly for a while, it wasn't hijacked. It isn't an "oh look at me I'm a perfect liberal" thing to suggest that before we OVER-react (and I don't think the OP was an over-reaction) we look at the facts. Keef's initial suggestion about approaching the guy still sounds like the best initial step - that should at least stop anyone suspicious from filming further. I am on the OP's side but it is surely important to remember, at an early stage, how quickly things can escalate I'm not accusing anyone on here of being this dumb: Escalation gone wrong but without balance, these things can happen.. Or police close down art exhibitions because of a nude photo. etc etc Mark's post had, I thought brought the thing to a close but here we still are. Throwing accusations of being immediately "attacked" aren't helpful either. jimbo was countered and responded very well - it was just one or two other people on both sides who got involved in a fairly pedantic debate thereafter As for involving the police with this one - well, they can't be everywhere and it's hard to think what they can do in something like this. I understand people's reluctance to get involved with strangers but we aren't talking about some juvenile attackers - some sad old geezer who would probably run at first provocation is more likely the scenario. And the more parents who directly question people doing this, the less likely they will feel comfortable trying it on

it has more to do with which browser you use. Fire fox does it by default for example. I have not used internet explorer for years

Before anyone follows that advice I would like to see more people vote with their wallet and visit Hoopers The Duke Nuns Head Montpelier more often I'm fed up of being in a tiny group in those places - all of them offer something different to the LL experience but we are poor at supporting them I reckon -

Horsebox - funny! but maybe not helpful to a first-time poster who is obviously nervous! Nico1 - great first post and good to know you seem to genuinely care about what people locally want If you've been following posts on here for a while you probably know that more that one or two of us hanker after Inside 72. That may be the opposite of the idea you have in mind but there it is Are you aiming for Lordship Lane? You will probably have decided wether to aim for the large weekend crowds or something a bit less lairy ? -
* coughs * My effort at *Bob*'s point is: He is not generalising about gay or straight men - he is NOT saying straight men ar neanderthals and gay men are adorable. What he is saying is that because straight men don't generally hang out in environments where they are hit upon every few minutes by (and here is the point) other men (sexuality not important) they never truly see just how pathetic a needy bloke can be If they were in such an environment (and a gay bar/club would provide such an opportunity) then they might learn something about themselves and the way they treat women when they are back out, pulling in their usual haunts Surely this is now lounge-bound?

I hear this a lot and have no idea why people are so negative about this place - if you care about this things, trust me London will do an easily comparable job in 2012. But it won't be made easy by people saying how rubbish it will be AT THE SAME TIME as begrudging every penny. Sorry LadyG that's not directly at you - just a general thing from people I've spoken to lately. People seem very able to highlight what has gone wrong but never what is good. Sydney Opera house was 10 years late as well y'know...

Louisa - I think that's essentially what *Bob* was saying - straight men could do with a look in the mirror etc etc

Is it Me? or is East Dulwich boring now?

absolutely Cassius - and I did think of sandperson when I wrote it. But as I say - It's not to imply anything wrong with the specifics... For the record I think Man U are playing some of the best football in the country at the moment and hats off to them. -
Just finished Andrew Mueller's "I wouldn't Start From Here" - a collection of his observations from the world's various hot spots (Kabul, Tehran, Baghdad, London, Belfast) etc He's an Australian writer with a great turn of phrase and a fantastic cut-to-the-chase mindset. The final afterword is him answering the one question he gets asked over and over again - especially by his compatriots - "But why do you live in London?" The answer he gives should be compulsory reading for anyone who bitches about London As well as that, World War Z, recommended by 2 forumites and supplied by one of them is JUST FANTASTIC. I'm trying to not read it and keep it for a long train journey but I just read a bit which made me laugh so much I'm.... going to post it in the "Things that made you laugh..." thread

Pizza Express pizzas have some relationship with the Italian originals at least I'm not averse to them by the way - just wouldn't go so far as to say "my favourite food" I'm not sure where I originally read that description of blandalanda tastes : ""favourite team = Man U/favourite food = Pizza Hut/ Favourite music = Simply Red" " but it has obviously stuck in my mind. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of them, but there is a homogenity (sp?) to the combination which does suggest an incurious mind, no?
