  1. Many of us have stuck up for prams in the past Mellors! (people who come to the EDT comedy and don't come and say hello however... *cough* )
  2. I'm with you Mockney - of course people will accuse us of being elitist but there y'go I have taken to watching 5 minutes of Fox News every evening - just to fill by hate-hump up every day. It's one of those things where I find the maxim "well everyone's opinion is valid" to be untrue - Fox News opinion is just not valid if anyone has any faith in humanity
  3. well, there is that....
  4. Good points Nero pearcesa: I was in the queue on Saturday and at least 2 people were having serious bother in front of me. You weren't the mum with the 2 little 'uns in, um, "fine voice" were you? I didn't catch what the problem was - I know one guy didn't have a delivery card and the mum had thecard but not proof of ID or something? The Q was massive but it's only going to get worse between now and Christmas. If I have to go down I am talking every piece of ID I have so there is no going back Since the strike my post has been all over the shop but I've not lost anything. But I don't blame the posties - I think management are being way too heavy handed on the issues and handling it badly (which isn't to say I agree with all of the posties old-school practices by the way)
  5. WR aren't treating anyone with contempt. And the prices are not overpriced. And the queue can be a great way to spend 5 minutes (ooo dear other people? don't tlike thaaaat. best not talk to em eh?) Through a catalogue of errors (all of my own doing I hasten to add - hands up) I found myself needing to buy some meat on Sunday. Because I hadn't been to Sainsbury's since it re-opened I thought I would give it a try so I took myself down from The Upper East Side (look pa no car!) to Sainsbo's. Won't be doing THAT again in a hurry More meat than anyone could shake a stick at but almost none that I would buy. From the SERIOUSLY overpriced "good stuff" to the "if you think that's a bargain you should have a look where it came from" cheap stuff I still couldn't buy what I wanted (chicken breat on bone) And the bedlam in there!!! And I didn't see anyone famous ;-) Reminded me of Alan Partridge saying he knew how U2 felt when they wrote Sunday Bloody Sunday: "Sunday Bloody Sunday?. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn?t it? You wake up in the morning, you?ve got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you?ve got to mow the lawn, wash the car, go to the Supermarket and you think Sunday, bloody Sunday!". Back to my Saturday morning weekly stock-up at WRose - even if I have been to a forum drink-up the night before...
  6. now now STP - no need for trench digging - noone is giving out to anyone (I'll save the Sainsbury's diatribe for another thread.. I ended up in there on Sun.... my own fault ;-) ) Parents are the only repliers so far - i was hoping for single lazy-arses to reply really...

    a joke

Jah - you posted it! Good man And I'm still laughing...
  8. The whores hustle and the hustlers whore
  9. Possibly true. Or maybe people are too timid to take a stance against him - if they did we might find that people are more tolerant than the Sun would have us believe
  10. Good points ed_pete but I think most people take the meaning of diverse to be race so was operating on those lines. But you are spot on about teh other factors. And so I think ED is still in good shape taking those into account too As for other countries laying claim to those attributes - I don't know. It's not an exhaustive list anyway but examples would be intersting. China for example could lay claim to learning, cuisine and energy. But it is inward looking and doesn't do "understanding" very well. Especially if you disagree with it - By opening up their culture to diverse elements that will become a thing of history
  11. Like me, when you actually pick it up occassionally, the Sun STILL manages to surprise and offend in equal measure Not sure if it has a "hefty" influence tho'. And do you mean influence on "the powers that be" or the poulation at large. I would argue they have more power on the political advisors than the general population If you are of voting age and influenced by Sun editorials, then you are likely just as easily influenced by lots of other tosh as well...
  12. Tillie - I suspect I'mn a hiding to nothing on this thread anyway as I will inevitably sound like I'm telling people what to do. And I'm going to try desperately to not sound that way.... but still. All I'm tryin to do is gauge whether the stress of looking for a parking spot, complaining about other drivers etc is worth it
  13. ed-Pete - I think you are right about the fact there is an assumption. But's one I would agree with. Having lived in homogenous, non-diverse areas of several types it is stultefying. And people remain inward-looking and hostile to "outsiders" A diverse population breeds energy, understanding, learning, cuisine, culture - amongt other things. I like those things...
  14. re: foreign players. Here's Mourinhio: "Unlike Arsenal, we sought success and tried to build it through a concept of the game using English players," he says in his book Jose Mourinho a Born Winner. "That was to have a positive effect, on the dressing room and on the press, in terms of the image that the club would project. " Here's me: Does anyone seriously think Chelsea established a good relationship with the press?? Does any team have an easier ride from the press than Arsenal?? So that's his point banjaxed then...
  15. Just when I think I'm winning The ghosts of my life blow wilder than before
  16. I think I know most of the walkers on here (we're the one with expensive cobbler bills) but just to re-iterate I'm not against driving at all - I love it. It's just counter-productive sometimes. LL on a Saturday strikes me as one of those times. But others may diagree so I'm curious as to what makes the aggro of finding a space (battling with all of the other drivers) worth it on a Saturday Obviously if you are picking up some big heavy load and that but I'm thinking of the people I see picking up a coffee, or a book from Chener. I would say walking/busing makes the whole day less stressfull and more enjoyable which is why I'm asking the question I guess
  17. A few people will already know my views on this but I am curious as to how far people travel to shop on LL at the weekends? I know some people who travel from, oooh, Barry Road might be reluctant to answer this for fear of a verbal beatin' but I'm genuinely curious...
  18. Depends what I was turned down for ed-Pete... Christmas order-books are like eye-of-a-needle around this time of year I reckon I could swing it if I went in this week but I wouldn't create a song and dance. It's a fair cop guv and all that
  19. Jeremy - I think we have clashed before on car usage but I think you might have a point there. Whilst I probably on scruffy mummy's side in the bigger debate, to say there is NO reason for ANYone is clearly overstating the case. And besides this is off topic so I have an idea for a thread..
  20. s'ok - we all knew, Tillie ;-)
  21. I'm with Keef on this - much missed. I hear Rice'n'Peas is good but is that bit too far away for me to carry home Service at JR was sloooow but they were usually v nice
  22. Borough Market on the last market day before Christmas eve is not for the faint-hearted but enormous fun - good shout Tillie
  23. Resurrecting this as a few of us went to the Tuesday shop-prices-in-the-bar offer last night. A couple of G&B virgins, one of whom said he has avoided the place as it always seemed pretentious Well, by the end of the evening he was singing a different tune. Marvellous evening with some great company and gorgeous wines. I even heard talk of making it a regular fixture.. I didn't see many of the regular bar staff but we were well looked after and just wanted to give the place another (tu)
  24. great post Brendan - really enjoyed reading that and can imagine that's exactly how my evening would have went (bar the smoking bit - you are quite militant on that score int'cha? ;-) )
