  1. lol That is partly the problem tho isn't it - most American's people don't live in NY or anywhere like it. And I would rather live in Stockholm than Columbus Ohio any ole day I don't think the fabric of NY would change THAT much if things were a bit more evenly spread (the gap between CEOs and average workers is 20 times greater in the US than it was in 1965 according to the International Herald Tribune - and I don't recall the US being a hotbed of soc-ialism* back then either) * been a while since the ci-a-lis word stopped a post
  2. It's not self-esteem issues Alan. I do ok. By "back yourself" do you mean I need to back up my arguments or that people need to look out for #1? It's not an esoteric debate - the world has plenty of examples of pay-gaps both big (US) and small (Scandanavia) . Guess which ones suffer less crime and are considered more civilised places to live? And the link between big bonuses and successfull companies isn't exactly watertight. When at Disney, Michael Eisner recieved $15mil bonus as the companies shares dropped 21% operating income decreased by 16%. But you already know what paper I read so I doubt there is any surprise ;-)
  3. And there was me thinking it was the workers who helped the company towards profitability I'm not jealous of people earning pots of money or doing well but if I managed a company like that and "earned" that much money compared to the average employee I would at least be a bit embarrased. Decision making, long hours, risk-taking - all these contribute to a succesful CEO... but so does luck. It ill behoves any human to say I'm worth X million more than you. It happens (movie.music.football etc)but only in business do people seem to believe they are GENUINELY worth that much more. Even Beckham appears to realise it's a crazy world where footballers are adored so much and get paid stupid money
  4. geez lew eez what's gotten on your goat today spadetownboy? You sound less chilled than someone trying to give up smoking who can't get his meds ;-) So to clarify the topic - Sainsbury's is close to being a dispensing chemist but isn't yet because it's hasn't received it's license - is that the sum of it?
  5. if the license is imminent I can't see any reason to complain - it's not going to make the license appear but it is good to see Ultra show the positive side of complaining when things can be changed I've just had one of the most painful months of my life (with regard to customer service that is) thanks to Orange who admitted the problem I had was experience by many other customers but a) noone really knew what to do b)told me there was no point in complaining c) offered to escalate to another team who couldn't do anything about it either In the end I found a way to fix it myself - lord help anyone else in the same situation
  6. I would treat a supermarket's pharmacy much as I would their "butcher" section - ie - it isn't
  7. ewwww MM - not good. The 63 can be great when it works but I find that by the time it gets to Blackfriars Rd all sorts of things can go wrong. Have a coffee on me when you arrive As for my whereabouts - physically I'm in Katherine's Docks looking at Tower Bridge - but mentally I am in Vietnam (booked for next year)
  8. Ah.. I remember my 1000th post.... (he said adding another as he closes in on 2000 )
  9. It's been discussed many a time on here Claire - link to latest thread here: That Place. You Know. Top Of Lordship Lane I live up that way and have been dying to know for years but little in the way of hard and fast evidence at the moment it seems (sadly)
  10. I have been reluctant to chime in on this one - I am undecided myself. I can think of several badly phased traffic lights on many a road around routes into ED and by badly phased I mean "not helping anyone - driver/pedestrian/bus" But I do happen to use this particular junction in question and can see everyman's point as well. I like to think I don't need a helping hand from over-zealous lights but I have crossed that particular junction a few times and thought I had "been lucky" with respect to dodgy interpretation of the crossing in it's current form. So I think something needs to be done around there - just not sure the light-phasing is it Then again drivers who take the "I am frustrated so it's not my fault if I get aggressive to people around me or drive recklessly which may endanger people's lives" should either take a chill pill or not drive. There is a bigger world than your journey to and from wherever.
  11. Badly behaved. . Hmmm. We will be the judge of that sordid details following
  12. no such problem with "gobshite" then? ;-)
  13. SFA & Grandaddy? sweet bill Is anyone else disappointed when a favourite band is a support act - not because "they deserve to headline" - it's just the sound is never good, most of the crowd wish they weren't there, the set is truncated... etc Cheers for the back-story Jah - a freak like me is always open for more stories!
  14. Back on topic then: The football could be a good start to the day, Hisar for evening meal, comedy club for mid-evening entertainment and then Streatham or Croydon for nearast ladyage
  15. Nowt wrong with a bit of pretension I say susyp. Nowt wrong with plain either mind you.... but "nicer clientele"? As far as I can tell half of this forum is in Chandelier on any given day these days... what are you saying about us ;-)
  16. good call Alan and good spot Mockney
  17. I have indeed seen them Anna and can only agree I have one eye on their December UK dates and quite fancy the Glasgow Barrowlands date - always a good atmos there
  18. ooooohhh - what a horrible thought. I have a similar pair of Seinnheisers which I will examine extremely carefully from now on
  19. Interesting thoughts... It's probably fair to say we all have the capacity to behave absolutely appallingly - but, to touch on another thread (the music one I think) if we bother to choose our peers, inspirations, "heroes" for want of a better word carefully then we are much more likely to behave ourselves generally To actually go and name a set of writers/bands/films/whatever and then compare it to another (wildly different) set of same would leave me open to accusations of generalising - someone is bound to know a Guardian Reading, Cocteau Twins listening, Kiwsloski watching guy who went APE in Prague - but statistically I think i would be happy to place bets at an airport based on who is carrying what
  20. That setlist in full: When I heard Bewley Brothers live I thought I had died and gone to heaven (yes I know this is turning into a mini Bowie-fest but I've waited long enough darn it) 1. 21. Plenty more flaneurs-by-proxy out and about between Elephant&Castle and Tower Bridge this morning Apart from the odd gobshite who feels his consumer rights have been violated, I think it actually makes people more pleasant as they have to think outside the box and realise that (f'rinstance) no-one needs to pay to go down several floors, wait for a tube at Picadilly Circus and then change at Leicester Sq when they can just walk 70 yards
  22. Can I also point out that giggirl should be applauded for a) Keeping music live b) hitting the ground running on this forum - she came, she joined and she posted! good on ya (plain wrong about Blunt tho - sorry)
  23. Right - compilation cd coming up for next drink up (as someone who loved the whole 70s albums and was gutted by the 80s, you don't know what you're missing)
  24. Was that in 2002 (the Hammy Bowie gig) when there was another tube strike? 3 hours he played that night (best part of anyway) - I was 2nd row - marvellous Asset - too right about downhill after Serious Moonlight. UNTIL.. 1993 or so. Buddah of Suburbia album onwards are some of my favourites. But dear god the 80s were bad for him
  25. I will be at the end of a long and hard week (drinks wise!) so may feel disinclined on the day Don't want to say just yet tho so let's keep this open
