  1. lol I won't say what I think of the "activity" in question DM - you might be offended But this place is what it is - it isn't beamed into people's homes so can be avoided if one finds it distasteful or cliquey. And I try REALLY hard to ensure people are welcome but if it's not to peoples' taste... then it just isn't Over the last year it has acquired character. Different people post (often frequently) and so it is different than some other forums.. I certainly don;t agree with everyone on here but as the "city bonuses" thread proves, I can be in a minority and still respect the people arguing with me I visit many places I don't like - but out of respect for the people who actually live there I don't immediately post A4 pictures on every tree be-litteling the place Cup of tea anyone?
  2. Businesses start up in the full knowledge of teh range of tax they need to pay - avoidance is not a "hidden cost" A certain global media group which may or may not be owned by someone from teh southern hemisphere is famous for avoiding most of the taxes you mention above, while at the same time seeking british nationality Ditto anyone rich enough to afford decent accountants can (and do) avoid most UK taxes on an individual basis - what make them "better" than us exactly?
  3. shame about that last post - I have no beef with DG at all.. seems a fine poster. but to quote a DM "poor diddums" quote does suggest a lack of ... well, I'm not sure how to put it. Calling it a "bit playground" is soooo off the mark The forum has been around a while now (checks diary ... 21st Sep is the 1st Birthday Party at the Mag... that clears that up) and it was a very, very wee thing at the beginning. I certainly never posted. I didn't feel confident enough But in the beginning ther was who ther was - a small group of people who "got" the gist of one another and , from nothing, made it the forum it is. Now we have many many more posters but we (and I include me even though I am now ubiquitous) should never forget why and how this place exists DG - out of context, Dulwichmum's post may seem childish and clique-ish. But I urge you to read her historical (and hysterical posts) as well as her blog and see where she (or is it a he from Penge?) is coming from There are personae on here and shouldn't be confused with the real people on here - some people play it very straight and honest ( I think I do, for better or worse) whereas other people enjoy a degree of anonymity to play with language. I would argue the forum is much much better for that (have a look at comparable forums for some idea of how dull life can be) If i had used words such as "ah diddums" I could understand you being upset DG but I think in this case it;s just crossed wires. Again, have a look at the historical postings and blogs and see if you can deduce what's going on
  4. Greggs sausage rolls are nigh on inedible. . . Genuinely scary factory scrapings. I had one last month for a bit of comfort nostalgia and was tempted to sue. . . I tried again in another location to be sure a week later and found they make them like that deliberately!
  5. I too moved south for the first time when i arrived in east dulwich. . . Best move i ever made.
  6. Good news.. Hope it continues in that vein. Good luck
  7. Is that a serious recommendation Peckhamgatecrasher, or have you seen me mention that place before? Grotty is one word I suppose... But if he is really good it's nice to know appearances can be deceptive - cheers
  8. not really - I've only been there once and saw only one other forumite so.. On the subject of quizes, is it now possible to go to one every night of the week within walking distance of LL?
  9. hoorah - let;s have a drink to that! (in the Lounge I would imagine...)
  10. Inside 72 used to do a pretty good one... but that was a while back. I'm pretty sure it's Gen Knowl the whole way everywhere else but the music round at the Canning quiz is different enough to warrant a check-out
  11. eh Declan? The quotes from Rosie's post make sense to me. Anyone who has kept abreast of the situation will be aware of how different papers have treated the case. Ditto TV to a lesser extent Again - we don't know the details, and we may never. That hasn't stopped far too many people jumping on various bandwagons since day one. Recent events appear to have given pause to the whole thing...long overdue. What I worry about now is all guns turning on the parents who may or may not be innocent... Daily front page exposure on the Express will add little to the sum of human knowledge. Let's hope a) some good news will emerge about the girl b)the real perpetrators are caught, whoever that turns out to be
  12. D'you know Rosie I said something very similar to Lady MacGabhann today... but very well said Again, I say that without particular reference to this case - but the way the media feeds it's audience, as with this case since May, should serve as a useful reminder when we next encounter some 'orrible event in the news
  13. T'was Declan... it was just a phrase from Life of Brian which I use when someone calls me on something (and I presume your previous post was a reference to me being "particularly tidy" about where the threads go today) Anyway - back on topic before we are all lounged I need to find a local dentist after the one I used on Pall Mall has been turfed out by (common theme on here) landlords
  14. I've seen a bowl of sausage rolls on the counter in The Bishop - are they sourced from EDD or just a generic ACME sausage roll?
  15. ;-) nice one centurion
  16. Did I understand another thread correctly that one of the vacant shops by Goose Green is about to become a sizeable dentist surgery Any road - do we think this thread should be in the recommendations section?
  17. I hearby declare Android the winna
  18. I would love to spadetownboy but right now I'm drowning my sorrows after the Republic so pathetically gave away that second goal in injury time.... besides, I've just had a re-read of my predictions for today's results - I got the Scotland one right but all the others waaay wrong
  19. The early-bird menu aside (possibly) I wouldn't call it cheap at all - last time I went i was charged close to ?20 for a fillet steak To be fair the Harvester has been discussed at length on many a thread in here - spadetownboy is probably correct that most people currently on the forum don't frequent it that much but there seems to be different reasons. The people spadetownboy is alluding to in his inverted-snobbery fashion will probably prefer the pubs on LL (definitely NOT gastro pubs....with the possible exception of Palmerston.. The Bishop for example does hot dogs at ?4 a pop) There are however a fair contingent of old-schoold ED residents who resent the Harvester for the entirely different reason that a national branded MOR chain gutted a well loved local pub But most definitely pop along - the food is ok for what it is
  20. for the obvious reason this has nowt to do with East Dulwich I expect this to re-materialise in the Lounge anytime soon
  21. too true luca Many is the time I have needed a rabbit jointed, or some bones for some stock and only Sainsbo's did the job. I have never had to Q in there either, I just take my goods to the counter and there is always a cashier (who, by the way, is always all too happy to engage in happy banter) The Jamie Oliver steak is not only better because he says so but it is always cheaper than a butcher but most importantly I understand they always always give their suppliers a good deal and never use their impressive market might to squeeze suppliers margins ever further Was that too sarcastic a way to say hello to a new poster? Sorry... Umm... hello? I was being sarcastic to get across some of the main reasons I no longer buy meat in any supermarket. I hope it didn't cause too much offence I guess if your meat requirements stretch to only pre-packed little pieces of meat in cellophane then they do a fine job. I assume you have bought meat at William Rose (the queue reference) and found it wanting. Unfortunate - I have bought meat in many supermarkets in the past but since William Rose opened (and Mr Sparks on NC Road) I have been paying LESS for my meat, had better choice, a better laugh with the people on the other side of the counter, tried new recipes at their suggestion, had extras added for free. Once in a blue moon I will try a supermarket premium option (incl the Jamie steak) but the phrase "pale imitation" doesn't do the phrase justice
  22. Welcome indeed brown coffee. . And what a good precis from mm. . I live a few roads away and even i feel like moving there!
  23. citizen - thought you might have posted an update to say same - sorry if all you had was the game for company
  24. And I notice you didn't stop at the traffic lights thread athome - good stuff These particular lights seem to be especially annoying to most people (I still hate the ones on top of Dog Kennel Hill the most) but have you got any link to those stats you quote?
  25. I think it was a little longer than 4 months but not much - apparently it sold some good stuff but it had the appearance of being really cheap and nasty
