  1. Exactly this. Lady MacGabhann and I devoured the first 2 series but 3 eps into series 3 we watched it and kind of enjoyed it for what it is but it doesn't grab in the same way Pam is getting more, erm, exposure this series which is A Very Good Thing in my book
  2. blimey - well, I wasn't going to bring it up on here but fair play TT and thanks to everyone for lovely messages. Amazingly enough the first person outside of medical staff and family after the birth was dulwichfox who I had never met before but approached me on LL and asked if I was seanmacgabhann - very surreal. Lovely chap tho
  3. nice try Olivia - like this country, I think there is little merit in blaming most of the politicians in power until there is a unified idea of what people want, OR an acceptance that leading a country is a horrible, horrible job which involves much compromise to keep as many people as happy as possible. I really do believe that people get the politicians they deserve (unlike the sense I get from others which is more "what have we done to deserve this shower"?) Having said that you do get some genuinely unpleasant and downright dangerous people in power - but at least in democracies we get a chance of jettisoning those people every few years
  4. Last weekend the Sainsbury's, the Lloyd's and the post office cashies up that way were all borked. The costcutter opposite the library has one as well which I remembered just in time - charges the usual hefty ?1.75 or so mind you
  5. "> 2. Is the measurement accurate? 0.5% doesn't sound > like a lot to me. 0.5% of a very large number is a very large number" i dont quite go with this - a percentage is the exact instrument to move away from absolutes you can argue that 10% of 1,000,000 is a large number but to the person earning, say, that 1,000,000 it's not actually that big a deal. 10% of 10,000 is a much smaller number but means a lot more to the person earning just that 10,000
  6. for those of us not in the know.. what is the preferred nomenclature?
  7. Unless the roads are, yknow, actually clearer, which is the point
  8. fair enough - i figured you must have discounted it for a reason. When I used to work that way the Overground wasn't up and running yet and I used to get off the 78/63 bus at Bricklayers arms and walk up and across Tower Bridge. Admittedly that's a longish walk but compared to staying on that single-decker cattle-truck all the way to Aldgate I was glad of the air
  9. would the overground from just off Brick Lane to Forest Hill would work out faster ridgely?
  10. All very sensible of course, but personally I get more of a thrill when people show themselves up to be good. What you know living in south-London doesn't always apply abroad or elsewhere in the country and if you stick to what you know you never learn
  11. quite a number of the "yes to waitrose - even better if Iceland go!" posts are from people who have posted for the first time or registered very recently Not sure what that says, but it says something
  12. I quite often encounter situations like this abroad - I haven't been scammed yet. If you are being told by staff/owners then I'm happy enough to go with the flow. And you get to come away feeling better about the world
  13. "Re my question about garage rents and Sean's useless reply. Sean I did not ask you. And your comment is very unhelpful and unrealistic. " A bit OTT? - my answer might be wrong but it was intended to be helpful and I think it's realistic
  14. isn't it more likey that the staff know about it because it was they reported it to the manager and wanted something done about it?
  15. I sometimes look at old backups of the forum just to read the comedy gold* (*I don't really)
  16. sire? This could get messy... oh, nearly forgot to say, this isn't the Lounge so stay on topic pls
  17. I suspect the likelier answer is that having it's budget slashed means the council need to raise cash in other ways. I doubt the garages will be vacated (or vacant for long)
  18. it was more than a stretch - it wasn't even meant to be taken literally but such are the breaks when you try and cut down on smileys in 2011. I'll be more careful in future
  19. Jeremy, I'm not arguing the point at all. My last post acknowledges as much and I have agreed with that statement everytime someone makes it. I am not asserting that the mortorist is always in the wrong at all, and if I am giving that impression let me say that is not my intention However What happens on here tends to be (and correct me if I'm wrong) people who have been caught legitemately and looking to get out of the ticket. I know of some posters who have been slapped with a ticket incorrectly, but in the main it tends to be the other And having these cowboy firms in operation is obviously a bad thing, but it is a symptom, not a cause. Not all motorists are in the wrong, but more than enough flout the laws at a ridiculous rate. You can see this yourself just observing any stretch of road for a few minutes. When that behaviour stops, teh rest of the problems go away The drug dealing analogy was a stretch obviously, but the attitude amongst those caught legitimately is strikingly similar
  20. 5 posts dan, and the last two directed at me? Kford. You are of course correct in that point and I have said as much in the past. But in the bigger picture that isn't the point. This post (as most if them are) was yet another example of a motorist being in the wrong ( not having a go neve, just establishing facts) and yet it's always turned into a debate about how "they" are the bad guys
  21. an even better way to get rid of them would be for drivers to not be breaking the law all the time - drivers save money and hassle AND put people they hate out of a job As it is it's just a pathetic, elongated whine. I wonder if drug dealers have their own forums where they say "look, I know it's wrong and I shouldn't do it but these undercover police are just a money-making scam" "True - and you know they often break the law when they go undercover - that's EXACTLY as bad as what we are doing - thieving bastards"
