Train journey times from ED to LB
Jeremy replied to missyelliott's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You can walk to most of central London in 2hrs... if you're banking on a 2hr journey anyway then that could be an option! -

Maybe you're right, but how could we know? There are few things in life that could convince someone that killing was not only morally justifiable, but worthy of reward in the afterlife. Religion can have this power, football probably can't.

Religion had no part to play at all? Really? So why did the gunmen shout "Allahu Akbar" as they were firing their machine guns? While of course its obviously wrong to extrapolate such acts to the wider Muslim community, neither is it useful to bury your head in the sand. Religion divides people. I struggle to see a place for it in the modern world.

I wouldn't expect much muscle gain from a jog round the rye though..

This basically equates to "never have a one-night-stand with someone you meet at a bar/club/party", which tbh is what I'd expect a good parent to say to their child anyway. But whether the parent stuck to those same rules when they were in their twenties is another matter!

All too easy to say. Just because their beliefs are not in line with mainstream Islam, doesn't mean that religion isn't a huge factor in all of this business. Surely the real issue is how the human race can move forward, when people all over the world have unwavering faith in different brands of nonsense.

It's hard to imagine that publishing ANY cartoon is going to make any real difference. Saying "look at us, we can take a joke and you can't" is hardly going to have much impact on a group of people who already hold beliefs that are twisted and perverted beyond any conceivable logic. And saying "we'll keep publishing this sort of material no matter what you do" is not going to make the slightest bit of difference either.

I think Tyson still had an awful lot of fans, even after he was convicted of rape...
-
I did agree with the line : I don't think the terrorists "win" if we fail to reproduce cartoons I know a lot of people were calling for the cartoons to be reprinted, but I'm not really sure what that achieves, other than a show of support. The next wave of terrorist attacks will still come against US/UK/France regardless.

I know what you mean. It does seem taboo to suggest that these things aren't always clear cut, or that there are varying degrees of seriousness. But I would think that as far as most of us are concerned, he was found guilty of rape in court, so we don't feel the need to question that. Was just thinking back to the Mike Tyson case... funny how when he got out of prison, he didn't have any problems selling tickets and PPV buys.. I guess attitudes have changed for the better over the last 20 years.

More frequent trains at more regular intervals, later running trains at night, more regular Sunday service (although the weekend closures have been the one constant fixture). IMO a once-every ten minute rush hour service (i.e. the one we're supposed to have) is perfectly good enough. -
Hi - thanks but we were hoping for someone within walking distance. But will bear in mind.

Is anybody able to recommend a childminder local to Peckham Rye or East Dulwich? It is for a 1yr old child, starting next month. Initially on a part time basis. Must be Ofsted registered. Thanks in advance!

"they have just seen Ched Evans as a convicted rapist - but when you look at the case and the evidence then certainly Ched has got a case" We're on dangerous ground when we start believing that our own opinions based on the available evidence (i.e what you're read about it) take precedence over formal proceedings..

It is usually possible to refill cartridges with ink... if you can be bothered (I can't).
-
Yes quite, didn't mean to suggest it was some sort of new fangled fad.
-
It's simply not worth getting a printer fixed (at least a bog standard domestic one). They are so cheap to buy... maybe even sold at a loss.
-
I'm not sure you can explain suicide bombers as "stupid immature boys" though... darker forces at work..

MelonSmasher Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why is it that when it comes to antisemitism we have laws in place to > prevent such sentiments while Islamaphobia is allowed to continue unchecked since 9-11? This is just ill-informed. Satire is not "Islamaphobia", and CH did not disproportionately attack Islam. For instance, Jews/Israel were frequent targets of their work.

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It feels like travel is now considered less important to Network Rail than shopping. Interesting conclusion. It also seems like the (much needed) Peckham Rye redevelopment is largely driven by the urge to develop new retail units. Also interesting comment about the listed structure. I remember thinking before the works that the existing platform roof/structure could look wonderful if it was restored. No such luck! But to be frank I'd be happy with a concrete windowless carbuncle if the service was reliable. It all seems such a shame, given the improvements we've seen to the service over the years. Now to have it all taken away... and I suspect will never be the same again. -

SteveUK1978 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The problem seems to be as soon as there is a small issue anywhere in the > LBG areas there is no margin for error and the whole timetable falls apart. I think that's exactly it... the schedule is so tight, there's no room for contingency. So as soon as one train is delayed by 2 mins, trains start backing up and there's insufficient capacity to clear the backlog. I recently heard an honest driver announcing "sorry for the delay, but the reality is that there are just too many trains on too little track". The loss of LB to Charing X is a further nail in the coffin, but TBH won't make much difference to me as I've basically given up on using LB. -

JimH - I think the South Bermondsey terminating train (7:40 or something) is still useful for some, as it is (theoretically) followed immediately by an overground train which people can pick up from the same platform at PR or QRP. -
EP offending Sue (I for one think he overstepped the mark) is not the same as some sort of coordinated forum in-crowd sticking together.
