Venice is maybe better for relaxing and wandering around semi-aimlessly. Rome is much more noisy/busy, and less manageable on foot. But Rome has 10x as much stuff to see, much more choice for eating/drinking, as is more of a "real" city (Venice is mainly a tourist town). Maybe best to do Venice this time, and do Rome when you have a bit longer to spend there.
Yeah I reckon Catford seems perfectly OK... you won't find the type of bars/cafes/junk shops/etc that you get along LL, but a couple of good pubs, and the journey into London Bridge is about the same time as ED.
MrBen/Whittler, when you're talking about mid-century houses on the Dulwich Estate... are you talking about the kind of houses you see on Great Brownings and thereabouts?

I think that's fair, David. I'd agree that it could use some smartening up, and to that end I hope that the station redevelopment will have some knock-on effect. But when I hear people moaning about the type of shops along there, it's really just one step away from complaining about the demographic of the area.
People need to understand that peckham is NOT predominantly a white middle class area. All these shops have a customer base, they are busy, they are valuable to the residents of Peckham. Do people really expect some sort of mass social/ethnic cleansing of rye lane, with 'appropriate' new businesses conjured out of thin air, just to suit their own preference?
While normal people realise that there are both sensible and irresponsible users of all forms of transport, a couple of militant cyclists seem to think that anyone on a bike is beyond criticism, because you know, cars are bad and stuff. Its boring and childish.
