  5. Oh yeah... just saw that. Dead Rolf rumours seem to be quite popular.
  6. Where did you hear this from, Tony?
  7. I basically agree that legal action is not the way to go. Especially when it comes to council/government... it diverts resources and money away from public services. But it could provide useful leverage to ensure the problem gets fixed.

    Great Gigs

Surely it's sold out though, GG. Unless you have *contacts*...
  9. I was actually referring to the tourist areas... should have been more specific. I don't think it's unfair though - I would say the same about the west end of London. Both are fine if you do a bit of research, otherwise there's a good chance of ending up with a disappointing meal.

Football supporters are strongly tribal too - in a different way of course, but still in a way which brings out the same primitive instinct. Yes we have a justice system, but I don't know what the punishment is for having a punch-up after the match. Probably isn't enough to deter these people. Perhaps they even see an arrest as "earning their stripes" or something. I do take your point, but at the end of the day, we're all humans. Violence exists in every walk of life.

  12. SteveT's right. The white violence is more widespread than you realise.
  13. I actually went to Puerto Banus about 10 years ago, didn't have a single decent meal! Any touristy area in spain seems to be a non-starter for decent grub. I had some nice food in Barcelona, but again, the majority of places are just serving up re-heated rubbish to tourists.

M&S sofas are OK. Also this place: http://www.raftfurniture.co.uk/
  16. Thanks... I have a figure from the building survey, but this does not match the amount the property was insured for by the previous owner. I was going to just use the higher of the two, but am now thinking of getting a survey, if there's a possibility it might pay for itself...
  17. For insurance purposes, what are the approx rebuild costs of a typical terrace house?
  18. Macroban, it's not like you to be so pessimistic regarding the economy! Historically the economy has always been cyclical... you are asking for evidence that this is still the case. Conversely, I would say that if you are taking such an unorthodox view, the emphasis should be on *you* to find evidence to support your case! Personally I don't think we're on the down-leg, I think we're at the trough. We will see...
  19. Would have loved to join you for another curry club... but money is a bit tight right now, so I'll have to sit this one out!
  20. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing a gentle rise in rates this autumn.

  22. We really aren't. But you would say that, wouldn't you? Although other suspects include HonaloochieB, Moos, and Mike Paleogopulopulous.
  23. Indeed - but Ted's a pro, innit. Still think that he and PetuniaButtons are one and the same.

I'm sure plenty of kids (or "young adults" if you prefer) find them difficult, but that doesn't mean they're not getting easier. How else can you explain more and more candidates getting top grades, year after year...
  25. Yes it's a bit harsh on the kids to belittle their achievements, but at the end of the day they must be getting easier. You can't argue with the statistics. Yes this may partly be down to modular courses, coursework/continuous assesment, etc, but that still counts as "making it easier", as far as I'm concerned. I think it would be better if the results were fitted to a distribution, rather than giving a quarter of all the candidates an A grade. Kids come from abroad to study in English schools and universities, often because it's actually much easier to get the qualifications here than in their home country. It's a bit embarrassing.
