  1. They're also relocating all the tennis courts from Wimbledon to East Dulwich (next to the Sports Academy site), because the land here costs half as much as Wimbledon. They're either going to change the name of the championship to "Dulwich", or Dulwich will be renamed Wimbledon. A final decision has yet to be made.

  3. Clinton was no Socialist. Left wing on the scale of US politics is nowhere near Socialism. Besides, as I already said, Thatcher was very keen on people buying their own properties. Private ownership vs state ownership is firmly in the realm of capitalism, I would say.
  4. I wish I'd seen this earlier. Dammit. The correct term, hellosailor, for this type of calculation is a COMBINATION, not a PERMUTATION. Because the order of the numbers are not important. The formula is 50 C 5 x 9 C 2. In long hand, this is (50! / (5! x 45!)) x (9! / (2! x 7!)) = 76,275,360
  5. I disagree that the idea of everyone being able to own a home is a socialist one. Nobody ever called Thatcher a socialist for the "right to buy" scheme. Neither do I agree that banks have become responsible for providing housing. Also, the notion of the UK taxpayer directly footing the bill for the bad investments is over-simplistic.
  6. Always serves as a satisfactory conclusion to an evening!
  7. I used to go to a few of those gallery opening things, when I had friends in the art world (before they all left London). On the plus side, you'd get a few hot women there, and plenty of free booze. On the downside, the art was usually shite and the places tended to be brimming with insufferable pretentious fops, faux-bohemian dullards, wannabe socialites, plus a smattering of city workers in search of aforementioned hot women. Give me a decent steak and a bottle of wine at the Palmerston any day.
  8. 5 - you didn't drink anything at all, and you're going mad.
  9. Thanks for the info, loobylou and dv1.
  10. Posting parcels, airmail, recorded/special delivery. Things like renewal of driving licenses, road tax etc are supposed to work online but sometimes don't work properly, so you need to go into a post office to get it done. Also, passport renewal from the post office is quite convenient.
  11. I'm sure it can be glued together... but it's never gonna be the same, is it (to state the obvious). The sound will certainly be compromised.

I know it's not your area at all, but I think it's disgraceful that a service to London Bridge and Victoria is being replaced by a service to Dalston and Clapham Junction. Absolute madness. Anyway... this has been covered elsewhere...

  15. To be fair, she was introduced to us as "former Tanzanian beauty-queen Mona Lewis".
  16. The Castle *could be* a popular pub, but right now it is often very quiet during the week. Perhaps a fresh coat of paint may encourage more neighbours to venture in.
  17. I don't 'get' post offices. We're always told that they're not viable and closing down... but whenever I use one, there's always a half hour queue.
  18. Do you think they'll keep some of the fruit machines?
  19. Pretty sure it was originally red! I think the place has bags of potential - and I'm sure there's plenty of demand for a decent trad pub, it doesn't need to go "the way of the others" and start serving seared tuna or couscous. It's a decent size and the building could look great with a a little TLC (as the estate agents say).
  20. It does. It is. I do. Although I actually got asked for ID the (one and only) time I went into "+venture".

  22. So, Mona has gone. She seems like a nice woman, but she didn't seem to bring much flair, creativity, or drive to the tasks. So I can understand why Sir Alan was "struggling to see where she'd fit into the organisation". But compared to those other people on the team... Debra's a pitbull with zero management ability. James is just a clueless, rambling nitwit. Mona might not have brought much to the table, but surely the others are totally unemployable.
  23. Noticed that the other night. Doesn't it look great?
  24. Don't forget the fishmongers, nobody has mentioned that recently. There's also a restaurant too.
