  1. You're right, it is a fine line... and I don't really understand how someone could generally consider a whole race of people to be unattractive. But looking at it objectively, one man saying "black girls are ugly" is no more or less discriminatory than another saying "black girls are hot". To say such things in public is obviosuly sexist and offensive, but I don't have a massive problem with people holding these views privately. I am much more bothered by those who dwell on perceived differences of non-physical characteristics.
  2. Good news for Camberwell indeed - and also for the parts of Peckham and East Dulwich which are also on Hoopers doorstep. Do we know if it's going to be traditional pub grub, "gastro", or something else??
  3. OK, so if it's not racist to find a certain "type" particularly attractive, is it racist to find a certain "type" generally unattractive? The main problem was that the guy said it out loud, clearly within earshot. I think that makes him rude and sexist, I don't think it necessarily makes him a racist.
  4. Just to play the devil's advocate... if someone found people of a certain race to be particularly attractive, would that be considered racist?
  5. Several places have sold recently in the area, including a place I was watching on Oakhurst Grove. It's just a question of pricing your property realistically. However, the agents presumably want to keep prices as high as they can, and seem to be marketing properties at prices which they will never possibly acheive.
  6. The problem is, if you do hand over some change, that's usually when the real trouble starts... because of course they're not *really* after just 50p are they.
  7. I'm not a huge fan of the current incarnation of the Mag... but it does seem strange that you say you'd like it to be similar to the Palmerston or Franklins, when those two places are just a couple of minutes walk down the road. I'd rather have a place which offered something a bit different.
  8. >how come no-one at any of the banks is getting axed They have been - what makes you think otherwise?
  9. Just a few off the top of my head... Better than the original: Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out Ken Boothe - Ain't No Sunshine Johnny Cash - Hurt Not better than the original, but still great: The Jam - Heatwave Nirvana - Man Who Sold The World Specials - Monkey Man Reasonable / interesting: China Drum - Wuthering Heights Joss Stone - Fell in love with a Boy Ben Folds - Bitches Ain't Shit Significantly Worse: Candy Flip - Strawberry Fields Sugarbabes - I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor The entire commitments soundtrack
  10. It's "smartwater", not "saltwater".
  11. London bars and Birmingham bars are door reinforcement devices... strong strips of metal you screw onto your doorframe. They look ugly, but work pretty well as I understand. I don't think you need a fitter... surely you just need a drill and a screwdriver?

I guess I was just trying to point out the probability of getting burgled if your backdoor is unlocked is probably quite close to the probability of getting burgled if your backdoor is locked.
  13. If it's your back door, maybe it doesn't make much of a difference whether it's locked or not... I mean, if a potential burglar notices you're away, and goes to snoop around your back garden, the chances are that if he's got that far he'll just break in anyway.
  14. The Mag used to be great. The current incarnation is not.

  16. Just out of interest... has anyone received tickets when parked in the little lay-bys on Basingdon Way (Denmark Hill estate)? I received a couple a few months back which I am still in the process of contesting, would be interested to hear if anyone has been in a similar situation (please don't bother proclaimimg your smug lack of sympathy!)
  17. No no, I start work at 9ish... the 6:30 start was only once every few weeks, and I don't do it any more... thank god!

The Canary Wharf commute has been a topic of much conversation in the past... generally takes me about 35-40 mins using the train to London Bridge. I used to drive in for the occasional 6:30 start, and that would take about 25-30 mins. I've no idea how you could do it in 25 mins at any more civilised hour.
  19. There should be a themed drink in every pub... real ale in the Palmerston, red wine in G&B... Something liquorice tasting (jager?) in Liqourish, Black Cherry cocktail in the Black Cherry... pint of wife-beater in the Mag.
  20. It's on Grove Lane.
  21. I had a BK "Angus 6-pack" the other day, it wasn't anywhere near as challenging as I'd hoped. It wasn't particularly nice either.
  22. Isn't there a cardboard recycling bank at Sainsbury's?
  23. I had an incident when an uninsured driver pranged my car. What with the excess and the loss of my no claims bonus, it would have been cheaper for me to get it fixed myself, with no involvement from the insurers.
  24. Rhodesy - you do have a point... but you are making assumptions, and from what I have heard so far, I am on the side of the original poster. If you're not supposed to park there, it should be clearly marked - END OF! Yes, generally we should walk more and drive less, but I think that's really a separate topic.
  25. Saw it, but got a takeaway from Pistachio Club instead! Thought Jaflong looked a bit ropey.
