  1. Does your milksnake no longer bring all the boys to the yard to look after it?
  2. I think I'm at least five of that list. *Bob*, was there supposed to be a comma after peacemakers? I mean, did you mean 'the grim peacemakers?' Genuine question rather than pedantic snipe, though I'll put up my hand to being on the list of pedants.

Incidentally, did you know that most battery eggs are now sold for use in ordinary baking products? The battery eggs campaigns were very successful, and comparatively few are now sold directly in supermarkets. However, they're sold instead to the makers of cakes and biscuits so unless you're absolutely sure of the source of the eggs used in your Rich Tea I'd hesitate before you apply the animal cruelty label to anyone else.

    Movie soundtracks

  6. I pulled my son out when we got a place at another nursery (at the time rated 'ok' or whatever the ofsted equivalent is). The high staff turnover was a problem for us as my 3yo son was graduating from a nanny share and was used to one person taking care of him. He bonded with his key worker and she promptly quit, and disappeared a week later. I also found the outside space pretty poor: tiny. I'm sure the place is fine, and clearly it ticks all the Ofsted boxes. But other than the first key worker whom we really liked, the rest of the staff didn't click with my boy. In contrast he settled brilliantly at the next nursery, although he did have a friend there which really helped. Horses for courses - wasn't right for my family back in 2010.
  7. What a crap situation, poor Strawbs and Jaws. If I've understood correctly, what you need is someone to come to your house every weekday morning, look after baby Strawbs for a short while and take him to nursery? It seems to me eminently possible that someone responsible who could do with a few quid could take this on for you. Do you have a regular babysitter you could ask?
  8. Bit he said, she said that Myth of Fingerprints story, isn't it? I'm probably biased, though. And I do agree that since we choose our heroes for their uniqueness, their genius, their extraordinary talent it might be a bit much to hope that they might be warm, rounded, ethically sound people too. Not sure I'll ever get over Gerald Durrell though. Edited for punk, puncshoe, punctuateness, too many full stops.
  9. Quite, that was one of the reasons I thought it couldn't be true.
  10. Someone told me that they / the radio station went on promoting the prank after the nurse's death had been reported. I suspect this is a misunderstanding / deliberate smear based on confusion between the time zones. But since it seems to have been reported it would be helpful if the radio station clarified whether this is true or not.
  11. That's right, cos it's not like he's mentioned it once or twice before.

    Ask Admin

Ilovemywhippet, your post was probably deleted for repetition. Your post of 3rd December stands, the one of 4th December got taken down. ED businesses are allowed to advertise themselves for free once, and for full compliance with the rules should contain an ED trading address. If you see other businesses breaking the rules, you can report them but the mod team do sweep as often as we can. Hope that helps.

No-one can afford 29 houses on Lordship Lane.
  14. Be honest, EP. How long did you spend deciding what the plural of sudoku is?

    Movember

I enjoy Movember and like to sponsor a good mo. A friend of mine (in quite a senior job where he has to meet clients) this year has upped the ante and had his head partially shaved and the remaining hair and beard dyed red, white and blue. Hard to describe the result. I particularly appreciate it when someone grows an unironic-looking moustache so that you're not quite clear whether it's real or for laffs. Droopy handlebar moustaches, while fun, are not quite as brave. But I can see *Bob* frowning at me now, so will run away.
  16. We've had a moany post about a two year old incident citing toddlers in - gasp! - Pizza Express at 6pm on a Sunday, I think we have reached the apogee of anecdotal evidence. This thread is starting to parody itself. Now, what other annoying groups of people can we start to include? Toddlers with dogs off lead? Single work-from-home cyclists? Let's do it!
  17. Nanny and Ann, it is a difficult one, and I agree that it's important to understand and mitigate the impact that one's children have on other people's happiness. Crying, noisy or naughty kids need to be stopped or taken away, and yes that can ruin your own evening or your lunch which is very tough but we all have to live together. However, it's perhaps a touch unimaginative to propose eating at home as an alternative as though this would never have occurred to any parent. All parents, and particularly stay at home mothers, do an awful lot of eating at home, and also socialising in friends' houses. There is no getting around the change to one's lifestyle after having children, and it is a little unkind to imply that parents are selfish if they are unwilling to sacrifice eating out entirely. Outings in public places are a lovely treat, and in my experience can also be a treat, a change of scene, a feeling of occasion for even small children. They need to be quick, well planned, timed early and ideally with an easy escape route if things go wrong, but in my view they are an important part of children's education. If people sigh and wonder why British children don't seem to know how to behave in restaurants, it is probably because they have not had much experience, because of the disapproval of people expressing views like these.
  18. Maybe it means feeling like that feeling is normal? I think I might have said this before, but I remember exactly when I realised that I was a mother. It was about 3 in the morning when my first baby (month or two old?) woke having done a vast explosive poo. Shit was everywhere: on the sheets, on the bed, all over the screaming baby. I was very tired and didn't know where to start to sort it out, and stood there dumbly for ages, until I realised what I was waiting for: someone to come along and take charge and tell me what to do. Then the penny dropped: no-one was coming, it was my job to sort out somehow or other, it didn't really matter how, I just had to get on with it. Pretty trivial really, and God knows I've cleaned up plenty of shit since then, but that was an important one. :)
  19. Victoria, I have read your thread several times and found it both moving and illuminating. Thank you for your honest, rational and eloquent account of your situation and your history. I wish you and your wife every happiness.

    X factor

I think The Voice format is better, or at least fresher.
  21. My smallest have both been freaked out at firework displays... 5 yo now Ok but spent last year's in the car feeling gloomy with frightened baby. Definitely wished I'd had them.
