Dear friends, I didn't forget to say thank you, I just wanted to wait until I could let you know how it went. It had to be Annette's summery fruits & chantilly cream. They all sounded delicious, but summer pudding is my mother's speciality, and I wasn't going to take that challenge on, even in sexy new formats. Lemon curd is a classic, but makes me go all goosepimply, and not in a good way. And David Mc - what can I say? A recipe in Young Person Talk, thank you so much for the kind compliment. It just had to be the Eton Messesque. It sounded beautiful, thoughtfully chosen to be suitable for children, achievable and delicious. I really am so grateful, especially for taking the trouble to write out directions. Huge, huge thanks to Miss Curtain, and thanks too to PGC for the extra tips. And how did it go? Well, I chose a fragrant, jewelled heap of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, which made the fridge smell delicious as they luxuriated overnight in their vinegar. The meringues were fragile, cloud-like things, crumbling enticingly into the bowl. And then we come to the cream. Into the mixing bowl it slithered. I assaulted it with my old hand-held whisk. After a minute's hard spinning, a couple of bubbles arose. I attacked again. The cream sighed and inspected its nails. I girded my loins and went in for one last titanic whisk. The cream continued unimpressed. So then I dug out the food processor and looked doubtfully at the unused whisking element. In went the cream. On went the machine on its single speed. 10 seconds later it curdled. Ho hum, says I. It's all about the attitude, I shall carry this off. I carried the glittering glass bowl of glowing fruit topped with meringue and cream over to the table, finished off with an airy sprinkle of mint leaves. The assembled throng, slightly greasy with my excellent chicken, gazed at their pud. "Look" said my brother, "Moos has made scrambled egg".

Thoughts from those who weaned early...
Moos replied to jennyh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thirded - or is it fourthed? We spoonfeed but Twosling has finger foods every day - chunks of pear at breakfast, "soldiers" of cold chicken at lunch, bits of toast at supper, for e.g. Didn't give him any toast (wheat) till he was over 7 months though. -
I thought you were me, Carnelli? Confoosed.

This forum is as bad as the South London de-Press
Moos replied to Michael Palaeologus's topic in The Lounge
Me too! Sniff! I hadn't discovered the forum in those days. I'm just sooo young. -
I'm renaming this thread Moos' Kitchen Conundrums. Good people of the forum, you have rescued my children from having to eat food full of lumpy onions and laced with their mother's blood. I thank you. Now, a new dilemma. I have a bunch of judgy-wudgy relatives turning up for lunch on Sunday all slavering and expecting to be near-poisoned. I've received a number of nervous offers to contribute courses, all of which I have politely declined. Having decided that starters are for wimpy, mushroom-stuffing types, I'm giving them Nigel Slater's lemon roastchicken bits with basil & tarragon, and lots of good booze. What pudding can you kindly suggest that is:- a) summery & light b) delicious & looks impressive c) can for preference be made in advance d) (and this is important) cannot be ballsed up by a chump thank you!! A kilt is a fine and manly thing. As long as it's accessorised with a pair of fine and manly legs.

Should ED make a stand and boycott News Corporations NOTW
Moos replied to georgegarrett's topic in The Lounge
That was particularly badly phrased, wunt it. What I meant was, the comments below the article point out that the NOTW is an owned title, not an independent entity, so the suggestion that it could be liquidated, and its records with it, is invalid. I find it hard to believe that any liquidator couldn't be sub-poena'd anyway, but what say the forum lawyers? Sozzled Moos -

Moos replied to georgegarrett's topic in The Lounge
Comments in the article suggest that since NOTW is a title owned by News Corp, the suggestion is incorrect. Which sounds as though it makes sense. Edited for duh-ness -
Sorry to hear you have an abscence, Quids, is it sore?

My tolerance level for this gag < everyone else's tolerance level for this gag

That wasn't a sentence, was it? Tut tut.

Buggie, sounds you're back in a calm place and have had lots of good advice - just wanted to add my support. Bugglet will do great-I do remember Moosling chucking food about at that stage too. If you can relax and go with the flow, give her and especially yourself a break, don't spend lots of time cooking but offer extra-babyish / instant foods, smoothies, yoghurts and especially extra milk, and just let her take her time getting back to "progressing" to more advanced foods. xx

I think there are plenty of people who seek out evidence that fits their own predispositions and find reasons to dismiss evidence that doesn't. Not sure what you'd call them.

Pointless question of the day (for cat owners)

I don't think you can stop them, no. Ours has been known to try salad left out.. -

Moos replied to georgegarrett's topic in The Lounge
Indiep. I rather agree - and the useful side-effect is that it hits the organisation in question where it hurts, so no bad thing. It's just a little irritating to see it portrayed as virtue outraged. -
Yes Tillie, but your daughter is beautiful and talented, whereas the Geldof girls are... well, they have famous parents.

Yep. Ditto the public handwashing during the first hooha of the Galliano affair. His trial has started, if anyone is interested. He'll pop up again pdq, fashion after all has a famously short memory. -
Bunk beds and toddlers - not necessarily a good idea
Moos replied to ryedalema's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Oh no, poor you all. How scary. Hope ryedalegirl feels better soon. Well done to the ever-fab King's. I had to go to kids' A&E (mostly for reassurance) once, and they were kind and efficient. -
Thoughts from those who weaned early...
Moos replied to jennyh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I weaned Twosling (now 8 months) a bit early at 5 1/2 months. I wasn't intending to at all, and agree with all the comments about not rushing into it. He was a 25th percentile baby so I thought he'd be a later weaner than his hefty older brother. But at 5 months his sleeping got (even) worse, he started to grab at food and generally seemed hungrier and after a couple of weeks I gave it a whirl. To my amazement he immediately loved solid food, quickly moved onto 3 meals a day and started to gain weight. I am a fan of combining spoonfeeding (which both my boys liked) with self feeding. BLW doesn't appeal to me, and I think the pur?e / mash approach can suit some mothers and babies better. I also think if you do start too early and realise your mistake you shouldn't be afraid to put the brakes on, make sure the milk feeding stays strong and either drop te solids altogether or keep to a few tasters. -
Loz, I love Excel 2007! Extra space! New functions! Love it to pieces.

Cervical sweeps; do they actually work???
Moos replied to Ruth_Baldock's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Annoyingly, I think the answer has to be 'who knows?'. I had one after I went a week overdue, and went into labour about a day later. Moosling born 10 days late... maybe because of the sweep, maybe because he couldn't stay forever... Opinions differ on how much they hurt, too. Best to grit your teeth and perhaps it will not be too bad for you. I was expecting something that felt like "sweeping", rather than "excavating". -

citizenED Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > raid party bags on the way out of the party.. let > the kids have it over the next few days. Citizen, that doesn't count, surely that's quite sensible? KateW, Twosling is also 8 months, took to solids like a little hoover and all of a sudden has started to fuss. I put it down to the hot weather, but maybe the word is out on the baby grapevine. Doesn't seem to have made his sleeping any worse so fingers crossed.
-
Cheer me up, surely I'm not the only one who does illogical things like this:- - eat some of the baby's food when he's not eating much so it doesn't look as though there's so much left - quickly palm things I don't want the kids to have, and then leave them lying around to be discovered the next morning
