  1. I've just read The Scottsborough Boys by Ellen Feldman. It reminds me of just how extraordinary it is that a black man can be democratically elected to be President such a short time after these kinds of attitudes prevailed.

After expressing an interest in the business - how about a wine tasting evening at G&B? There's lots of different ones to chose from and they range from between ?13 and ?35 so depending on which one you chose you can get two tickets so he doesn't have to go on his own. 3. A drunken moustache?
  4. Daizie, did you know that there is an Organ Constructor's Society? It might be of interest if you have specific requirements? It is a society for those interested in building and/or customizing organs and similar electronic instruments. I am reliably informed that the Society was founded in 1960 by the late Arthur le Boutillier in order to bring together enthusiasts who were building electronic organs from kits or to designs published in books and magazines. Just a thought.
  5. I'm sure that's not what the OP meant. Don't be such a silly girl. :))
  6. [snigger]
  7. I think you just answered your own question, no? Piano every time for me.
  8. Rationally DaveR you are completely correct. But I'm too old to be a supermodel or a popstar or an international sporting hero, and that is starting to bother me! (Age is of course my only bar to these various professions, you understand.) [Oh good lord the painkillers are wearing off. How is it possible for earache to be this bad! This is another sign of age, no?]
  9. Swing carefully Curmudgeon - however irritating those coaches are, don't have an accident!
  10. The Ironic Mullet - worn by one who knows it is bad and is doing it for exactly that reason. The Post Ironic Mullet - worn by one who feels the style is so bad it is actually now cool again.
  11. I'm 37 and dreading being 40. I used to be thin, rich and single. What happened??!!!! But then I'm feeling very poorly today so maybe I should consider the issue again when I don't have appalling earache......:'(
  12. You know you want to. Go on. [irish accent, teapot held aloft] Ah gowan. Gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan gowan. Go on! 13. Can you tell us more? Or would you have to kill us afterwards? EDmummy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Just heard the reason for this event from a > relatively reliable source. This has now convinced > me that the police reaction was totally > proportionate.
  14. I think all children are different so go with your gut instinct. You know your child best. My daughter hated being left anywhere when she didn't know the people well, and still does (she is now 4) but my son loves it, never looks back, I don't even get a kiss goodbye (he is 2.5). Both have been raised the same and put into the same nursery at similar stages. There's no right answer!
  15. London Bridge Station was closed earlier due to a security alert. I don't know if it has reopened yet but it hadn't half an hour ago and so is worth avoiding if you are heading home.
  16. Sakurasteve - wishing you a speedy recovery from a horrible incident. I'm impressed that you stayed calm enough to give any kind of description of anyone, especially given you could barely see. I witnessed a robbery once and was so freaked out I was utterly hopeless at giving a description, beyond saying it was probably a bloke. I hope they get caught, and I hope you regain your equilibrium enough to see that, insensitive posters aside, this is quite a nice place to live.
  17. I have challenged parking tickets before and succeeded so its worth a go. You have to appeal within a certain time so read the back of the ticket carefully so you don't fall foul of any deadline, then just follow the appeal procedure on the back of the ticket, explaining about the lack of clear signs. You might just get lucky!
  18. A father is best defined as: "a man with a photograph in his wallet where his money used to be". Also Anon.
  19. Happy wife, happy life. Anon
  20. How about putting up a large sign in the staff room saying: "There has been a recent spate of money and other items going missing from the staff room. Please be extra vigilant." It might put off the perpetrators, and make them think they are being watched? Wouldn't cost anything while you think of a more conclusive way of dealing with it.
  21. Chacun a son gout? Now that's ironic!
  22. I'm not sure how the Goldman actions help the taxpayer though. If they don't have a big bonus pool, they won't have to pay the huge tax bill, so the taxpayer gets no money back. Goldman just keeps the profits (which are significant this year) and spends it on something else! How does this get me my money back?!
  23. Brum, are you in popchoir? (You don't have to confess if you are trying to hide your true identity, especially after this thread....!)
  24. The tax is a really foolish idea, and was brought in against the wishes of the treasury, as a political gesture. It will not raise any additional money. It applies to a bonus over ?25k. So for those "due" a bonus over ?25k, you simply pay ?25k as a bonus and pay the rest as a salary rise, making clear in your offer letter that you reserve the right to reduce the salary next year depending on tax legislation at the time. Job done. Yes the salary increase is taxed, but only at levels that the bonus would have been taxed at last year. So no difference there to the Treasury at all. Or am I missing something? If you want to get taxpayers money back, you put a levy on the banks each year as they have in the US, and make that levy a percentage of the banks profits, before any money is made available for bonus pools, or indeed anything else. That way it can't be wriggled out of. The ONLY problem with this approach is that it doesn't have the headline grabbing "we've put huge taxes on greedy bankers" benefit. Don't be fooled. This is a really silly waste of time and effort, and it won't get you any of your money back. And no I'm not a banker. Nor have I ever been. And nor is or has Mr Beagle. And I am a tax payer. A very cross one!
