  1. I get disturbed sometimes by comments about self defence courses for women. They can unintentionally be dangerous. When practising the moves in a gym/hall it all seems so straight forward and consequently the student can take too much assurance from the training. It takes years to be truly effective whether man or woman. Unless the self defence course focusses on avoidance and prevention, the course may have limited relevance to what you do on the day. In fact, this should be one of the first things taught on a women's self defence course. The assailant has you on the back foot from the second you know he exists and often the only reason he can get proximate enough to make an attack is because you can't do anything in retaliation (apart from run) until he does something.
  2. Agree with the pub bit, otherwise all bollox.
  3. ADS have sorted me for several flights to Gatwick. Even taking detours here/there for me to close out final bits n pieces on the way. Good outfit IMO so far.
  4. UncleGlen: "Strip wash every morning- one sink of water. 4 baths a year. Honest truth. And you can't beat a pack of baby wipes at a festival". Ha ! I don't have a shower at all, overrated IMO. Bath all the way and not too frequently either, often after rest of family have been in. when it's just me, I often do 'bucket bath' like they do in Thailand (they call it 'Ab Nam'). You use a bowl to pour the water from big container over you. Very little wastage and low dependence on technology. At festivals I can can strip wash entire body on 3 pints of water, though I may taste a little soapy.
  5. Scott Harrison (of Glasgow, I think) came back to the ring on Friday evening v after more than 6 years away, which included time on alcohol and in prison. Physically he looked amazing, better than I've ever, on the surface. He boxed and beat an Eastern European who had 7 wins in 3 months ! But that WAS the opponents full record. Harrison said he's over his troubles and wants world title contention again. At 34, and given his time off was not spent cleanly, he may be expecting a lot. But he looked good and appeared sharp for such an absence. Probably best he gives himself a couple of years rather than (as he postures) take on Ricky Burns or Kevin Mitchell right away. One to watch though, let's hope he can keep straight and find his prior form. He never lost his WBO world title in the ring.
  6. Sounds very vague from your solicitors.
  7. There are signs still up on crossings sne road signs around Dulwich area. I think usually Carters take down the signs when they leave.
  8. Never too late as we'll defo be going again, and soon. Didn't see Kaosan - where abouts was it (I'm readin Brixton Village as that covered area under the railway lines) ? There was a Thai Place called Yum-D situated in the covered area next to Brixton Market, on a covered lane leading to Coldharbour Lane, they served dishes from my favourite region, Isaan (North East), such as sticky rice, Som Tam papaya salad, Laab minced pork salad. Someone warned me about the basketball event which was up on the pave areas in front of Ritzy, but it posed no issues for the market that I could see. Having never been to the market before I could not gauge whether the crowds were thicker than usual. It was crowded we weren't bothered. One thing I forgot to mention was the Columbian cafe sold us some of their home made soft cheese which this afternoon my partner will be using to make us Aarapas (s One good thing about the market was the density of fruit n veg shops within a small area meaning plenty choice and less footwork. One thing I forgot to mention was that the Columbian cafe sold us some of their soft cheese so this afternoon my partner will be making Arrapas (sp.), lucky me.
  9. half a dozen poppadums from oven smeared with Patak's hot lime pickle.
  10. We found a couPle of Colombian places to eat and ended up in the smaller, cafe place which has just 2 tables outside. Has a chicken soup meal which was all good, better half had beans Columbian sausage rice salad. Both dishes were ?8. Had no room left for an Empanada (beef pastie, deep fried). Plenty grocery and ingredient shopping done. For me, everything that Peckham Rye Lane has plus the international eateries, not as easy to get to as Peckham though so for me a great place for choice of cuisine. Cheers for tips. KK
  11. Thanks - will check these out. Anyone else been there and got tips ?
  12. That's what the countryside is for.
  13. Never been to Brixton Market but we're gonna head over this aft. I met a Columbian guy a few weeks ago he said there's a stall there selling his Country's food. Bumped into a Thai guy last week he said his wife runs a stall there. I'm into Asian and West Indian cooking so hoping for major treats. Anyone been there for food / ingredients ? Any tips for interesting stalls ? cheers KK
  14. I read today that Ricky Burns is taking on Kevin Mitchell in September, up in Glasgow. Some things to consider here are how easily Katsidis dismantled Mitchell and how easily Burns handled Katsidis, taking everything he had then outboxing and out landing him. Of course there's the argument about Mitchell having been in a bad way before he met Katsidis due to alcohol and family troubles. It's good news as a match-up now though, Mitchell duffed John Murray in 8 last year, previously unbeaten (I think). Anyway - good contest to look forward to.
  15. There are a few maisonettes on Whateley Rd too, starting from no. 28
  16. I heard there was a prisoner of war camp for Italians. Maybe they were making cured hams Parma-stylee.
  17. Knock on her door and give her 15 mins to collect the trash before you call the council. OR dump it over gated entrance to ED Police Station, after having first circled the address label with red marker.
  18. From the half houses I've been in and worked on in ED and Nunhead they've all been purpose built. Modest dwellings rather than partitioned grander properties, this includes Silvester Rd and Waveney Rd.
  19. Sue paint is no different than varnish, people varnish pianos (though strictly speaking, from a furnish restoration perspective waxing/polishing is more 'proper'). Unless you're painting the strings and hammers inside you'll be fine. And if you're doing that shame on you and be careful you don't fall in !
  20. Tell-tale signs under the floorboards (ie. old footings) can tell about previous brick walls, or (as in my house) an indication of where the solid floor of the scullery used to be. Another clue is abrupt changes in picture rails, ceiling coving and skirting. People obviously paint/plaster over marks so until you'r ripping coverings off it's often difficult to identify old layout.
  21. Terraced houses was either a coal hole under front door, a coal box in front yard, or coal was carried through to backyard.
  22. Yes, stories (warts) like blowing coke up his band mates' asses with a straw. Pretty effective I guess it must have been too.
  23. ....not if you're illegally in the USA.
  24. you gotta be a member ? if not - where is it please ?
  25. Dave the Butcher's was a classic visit during any weekend's shopping. That alone is reason enough to hate the hell out of Sainsbury's, which decimated Lordship Lane and the side streets'. Sainsbury's opening meant that within a year or so you HAD to go there to get all your shopping in one visit because the fishmongers/butchers/grocers were deleted from ED.
