In my experience, you only don't get a seat at peak rush hour (between about ten to and half past 8). I have always got a seat on the 7am - 7.30 trains. And also after half 8 as Kels says if you are lucky enough to go in a bit later. I always get a seat coming home as well although you probably need to be at London Bridge 3-5 mins before the train goes to do so.

Where does Somerfield fit into it?
-
To be fair, the old ones were very bright as well - we had to have two sets of curtains to stop our bedroom having a permanent orange glow after sundown. Although fortunately for us the new one has been placed outside our neighbour's window rather than ours...

I am surprised that a landlord would not have details of when his tenant moved in. Is there not a lease in place? Such shoddy record keeping could be indicative of undeclared income and it therefore seem reasonable that HMRC are cracking down on this particular sector of taxpayers. Those who have been honest in their declarations have nothing to fear and those who have not should be paying their dues IMO.

So where is that Northern boundary of East Dulwich?
Sonners replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Is Brixton Hill not the one to the left of Dulwich Hill that then runs through Streatham? -
So I wandered past Curry Cabin about an hour ago and someone has been painting the outside white. The painter had gone on his lunch break but had left a sign saying "I did not paint the wall". It made me chortle quite a lot!

The worst thing I ever forgot (on a train or not)
Sonners replied to snoozequeen1's topic in The Lounge
I was very hungover one morning a few years ago (okay, maybe still pretty drunk)and managed a 45 minute commute without realising, until I was walking up the steps to my office, that I had somehow managed to forget to put a bra on. It was a very uncomfortable morning before I could go to the shops at lunchtime. Not helped by my mate blabbing to the boys who then all strangely were following me every time I had to go up or down a staircase... -
Speaking of curry houses, what is Coriander like? I have never seen anyone in it which is putting me off trying it. Or is its clientele more takeaway based?

explosive device in ED police station
Sonners replied to benjaminty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I wandered past the Police Station about 30 mins ago and no problems with access to Pellatt Road. -
We also bought in October 07 but I am with benmorg on this - we are probably going to be in this house for the next 5 years and so any dips in the near future aren't worrying me. We may have paid a higher price than we would now but now we would probably not be able to sell my two bed in Brixton at all, let alone for the price I got it, so it's all swings and roundabouts if you're already on the ladder.

Problems getting parcels delivered by royal mail
Sonners replied to Sita's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Poor you! The two times I've been in there I've had a very chirpy good morning by the guys which was a welcome change for the extremely moody ones I was used to in Brixton. Although on neither occassion have I been asked for ID to prove that I am who I say I am so I hope that any "You were out cards" don't end up in anyone else's hands... -
Live in East Dulwich and work in .....?????????
Sonners replied to ratty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'd have thought that it was quite easy to get to Islington - train to London Bridge and then a few stops on the Northern Line to Angel? Although admittably the Northern Line is so hideous that a longer journey might be preferable to avoid it! -

Oooh, thanks for the tip Cassius! Are the trains quite regular from Denmark Hill to Blackfriars? -

I am also a no. 40 regular but get off at Bank to walk to St Katherine's docks. Or I get the tube one stop to Tower Hill if the weather is particularily awful. Although unfortunately my firm is moving offices to Chancery Lane soon which is gonna add to my journey time. :'( -
Cat Epidemic (stop them going in my garden)
Sonners replied to Mabel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Erm, surely that would depend on how you define vermin? From Wikipedia: "Since the term is defined in relation to human activities, which species are included will vary from area to area and even person to person" -
Cat Epidemic (stop them going in my garden)
Sonners replied to Mabel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Has anyone tried an ultrasonic cat scaring device? I was thinking of buying one yesterday but wonder how effective they are. I don't mind cats being in the garden too much but both of next door's come inside our house every time a window or door is open which is going to get even more annoying now that summer is (hopefully) coming... -

They do a fantastic sausage roll in my experience! -
I had my first experience today - rang at 10am and was told that I would be called back for a clinical diagnosis between 3 and 4pm. I didn't mind that too much but then no call came so I called again at 4.45pm and was told that they would call me shortly... Finally got a call at 6.55pm, by which time I was googleing other doctors' surgeries in the area. To be fair that lady was helpful and offered me an appointment on Wednesday, which isn't great but my issues aren't life threatening so I don't mind. Will wait and see how the service is once I am there!

Why can't I get online quotes for House Insurance in ED
Sonners replied to Curmudgeon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We had no problem getting insurance through Halifax and pay ?73 a month for buildings and content (including some optional extras) which I don't think is too bad. But then our mortgage is with them and I don't know if that makes a difference. -
At least when they're outside somerfield you can choose to look at the floor/your mobile/across the street/into your bag/at your screaming (or not) child* as a deterrant - it's the ones knocking on my door twice a week that annoy me more. I have taken to not answering it... *delete as applicable

When we were looking at houses to buy just before Christmas the estate agent actually warned us about the people I assume you are talking about, despite having a house for sale themselves on Whateley! I am pleased to say, having read the earlier thread, that we ended up a couple of roads down instead. I will be avoiding walking that way home so thanks for the warnings everyone.

Well I try not to but having lived in slightly ropier parts of town than ED until now and tried out some of those local boozers to only be met by pretty unfriendly stares it is not always worth the risk...!

I just wanted to say that I am very pleased that this thread was started. We moved to ED a couple of weeks ago and I had written off the CPT as a place to have a pint in on the grounds that being off the beaten track, and looking a bit run down, it might be an intimidating "locals" pub to go into. However, having read everyone's comments on here I am now looking forward to having a pint in the CPT and it's nice to hear that there is a proper boozer near my new home. And it sounds as those of you who frequent it are pretty friendly! The Mag is my other new local and it is brilliant to hear that I now have a choice for where to go for a pint in, when I am after somewhere that hasn't been gentrified. Fingers crossed that a sympathetic new owner materialises.
