  5. I have found Joannas in Crystal Palace far better than Franklins in terms of food, ambience and service. No contest. I will, of course, be accused of sacrilege as it is not in ED.
  6. John, I have clearly said that JAGS was far richer than Alleyns until the 1990s!
  7. Love me do - Beatles

  9. John, I am not sure what you mean by a wealthy charity exactly, but in the case of Alleyn's until the funds of the Estates Governors were more fairly distributed in the 90s it got a tiny amount of money from the Dulwich Foundation compared to Dulwich College and JAGs. In the inter-war period it would not have been well off at all. Of course, another view is that work in the community by a school has nothing to do with how "wealthy" a school is, but how focussed the school and the pupils are on doing their bit for the community. I believe that in the 30s Alleyn's got a high proportion of its pupils from ED, which was quite a working class/lower middle class area then.

  12. I agree, but this is a "strip" next to the road, and there are lots of trees on it (still room for cars) and the grass could have been retained, with those concrete pads underneath. I am not talking about the larger area near the tennis courts. The new theatre was not built over a car park, it was built over a corner of the playing fields. The car parking that was lost was formerly on corners of the tarmacked area which is now fully available for the children to play on. Formerly cars were taking up space that it would be nicer if the kids could use for playing at break or whenever. I doubt if you were told this by a friend of the school, Sillywoman! If the school were to do this in today's climate they would risk being sued by a ligitious parent. Bursaries are given exclusively to children who do well in the entrance exams, and who otherwise could not afford to attend, based on income. Full stop.
  13. Good idea - they have an archivist
  14. Why are you interested?
  15. ladywotlunches, But teachers' pensions are not costing the country any money! So you are asking them to pay more to pay off the country's debt? Wouldn't it be fairer to just raise income tax? Why single out teachers?
  16. Message in a bottle - Police
  17. Dear Sillywoman, If you pass the entrance exam, you can get a bursary and pay nothing. They had to close the pool/sports club because (unlike JAGs) it can't be physically separated from the rest of the school site and so a sports club user could gain access to a child at the school. It caused great dismay at the school, but it was just for H & S reasons. Southwark wouldn't let them use spare land along Townley road (between the astro and the road) as a car park. That rather undermines your argument that money talks too. So blame Southwark for the car parking situation, not the school. Your views might just come over as sheer prejudice!
  18. Telephone line - ELO
  19. Turn! Turn! Turn! - The Byrds
  20. Sillywoman, In what sense does "money talk" in this case? There is no sense that Southwark would have approved it unless it was reasonable on planning grounds. Or are you suggesting the school bribed the Labour council?? Rather unlikely. I think we should be told!
