  1. Confusing picture here. From what I understand, a male was out walking his dog. He collapses. His pet dog, being a pack animal, wants to defend the owner from any harm. So the police attend scene and have dog removed so man can be treated. Why all this throw away misleading tabloid talk of dangerous dogs and a waste of resources? A man could potentially be very ill in hospital for all we know. Not impressed by the way some people on here take an sensitive thread such as this and take it off in a dubious direction. Any news on how the man and dog are doing? We're family informed? I hope he gets well soon. Louisa.
  2. If its building limitations only then maybe it work better if it relocated to a larger space? The Mag for example. Louisa.
  3. Exactly. Inside 72 a great example. Would do rather well now I'd guess. Something similar going on in Blenheim Grove with Bar Story - that could still be achieved up here. Louisa.
  4. John variety comes in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, the demographic homework obviously wasn't done on this occasion. A pub offering what the Draft House offers would do amazingly well in upmarket Richmond-upon-Thames or Chiswick for example, but it doesn't appeal to the inner city younger crowds with less disposable income. The sort of variety I refer to is the kind you'd see in Shoreditch for example, trendy, exciting, live bands, drinks promos etc etc I'm not expert on how this would be achieved, but I'm sure there's a gap in the market locally for some sort of hip downmarket but cool vibe. Louisa.
  5. Galtee cheese. Louisa.
  6. I'm with DulwichFox on Hoopers. I wouldn't go anywhere in that area without being in a taxi at night. Back to the draft house, I think Lordship Lane suffers from too much of the same thing in terms of pubs/bars. You have three venues within a space of about 50 yards - all competing for custom, all pretty much offering the same thing. Variety is what is needed. That location would work far better if it had a theme or offered something exciting and different. Without sounding too sympathetic to the Claphamite influx (god forbid), I think to match an area such as Northcote Rd more variety has to be offered or else the crowds have no reason to go there. Louisa.
  7. I think that would make an ideal spot for a Be At One cocktail bar. Louisa.
  8. Hipsters and elderly cockneys side by side playing pool. Gentrification in motion. Louisa.
  9. Oh what fabulous memories I have of the Odeon Dulwich. Saturday morning pictures as a kid, and I remember queuing up to see "The Graduate" one evening in summer I think. Oh the memories. So sad it's gone. Louisa.
  10. Just checked the Southwark planning portal. Fear not folks, Peckham is a million miles off full blown gentrification. Unit 10 of the Aylesham Centre (formerly WHSmith) is set to become dah dah dah... Poundworld. http://planningonline.southwark.gov.uk/DocsOnline/Documents/301331_1.pdf Louisa.

As has been discussed, people in London often live in the same place but are basically in a parallel universe. We all live different lives depending on any number of factors. The Peckham I remember as a child was largely white and working class. There were pockets of wealth along grove park towards Camberwell and out towards Dulwich proper, but overall it was a largely poor area. It took the main shopping street a long time to catch up with demographic change. The area still had an M&S and Sainsburys until the late 80s, and from a socio-economic point of view they probably should have closed down 20 years earlier. The departure of major department stores on Rye Lane from a retail point of view didnt always match the fortunes of the surrounding streets and areas, and the emergence of ED as a gentrified neighbour is a good example of this. Louisa.
  12. I went to the Mazey Day Carnival event in Penzance some weeks ago. A cornish event, held in a Cornish town. I'd estimate that 2/3 of the people at least were not from Cornwall, they were holiday makers. But does this indicate anything about the event being a positive or negative thing for the area? I'd suggest not. It's still promoting the place, and it's bringing money and potentially investment into the area. How is this different to Peckham or anywhere else for that matter? Louisa.
  13. Ok good point. But for the sake of splitting hairs Peckham was historically a village in the county of Surrey before London expanded. Louisa.
  14. London is in a constant state of change. Demographics change. Places change. Peckham is no different- it started out as a poor rural community on the Surrey/London border, it became a respectable middle-class London suburb by the turn of the 20th century, then gradually a largely poor white working class inner city neighbourhood by the middle of that century, and as the decades have passed it has become a mixed ethnic minority majority community. It's now in a state of change once again as early signs of gentrification take hold and students/artists as well as predominantly white middle class families move in to buy up the relatively underpriced by London standards housing stock. That's London for you. Change is inevitable. Either embrace change or move somewhere else. Louisa.
  15. Poor animal. There's no need for anyone or anything living to be forced to suffer or not be fully hydrated and a whining noise is a horrible but necessary cry for help. Well done first mate for doing so much to help. Lets hope the RSPCA will get a case together and get the poor thing into care. As for the comments by silverfox, uncaring, offensive, trolling - how would you like to be left suffering and have no one help you? Probably best you keep your comments to yourself if you can't contribute with anything useful. Louisa.
  16. Just read the notes on the appeal. They have a pretty strong case, I wouldn't be surprised if they succeeded. And also, lets not forget the change of use application on the former crown house on east dulwich road. Maybe waitrose? Louisa.
  17. I would personally support the idea of quality over quantity. We already have an abundance of Mediterranean style/themed restaurants in the area and a lack of any quality in that type of restaurant. If this is another mediocre restaurant then it wouldn't do this areas reputation any good, if its offering something unique and different then good luck to them - its long overdue. I personally am slightly disappointed no bigger chains have not opted to come into the area which would increase footfall and encourage existing businesses. I fear for the future of lordship lane currently because chains have more reasons not to come here than to come here. Slightly different reasons but if the opposition to M&S is anything to go by it doesn't bode well for the future of our high street. Louisa.
  18. I retract my previous suggestion. I've now read the applicants mission statement and I quote; "106 Lordship Lane will be East Dulwich's first truly continental Cafe Brasserie drawing on an abundance of culinary traditions - with a focus on the Mediterranean, it will strive to surprise and stir, and will do this using bold flavours from the Middle East to Italy, and onto Spain." It goes on to finish with; "Our family have been residents of the area for many years, and have long term personal and business ties with East Dulwich. We know the area and it's people and we feel that the restaurant will be a great independent business addition to our locality". http://planningonline.southwark.gov.uk/DocsOnline/Documents/303654_1.pdf Louisa.
  19. Looking at the pictures which were not previously visible on the application, I would hazard a guess at a chain such as Wagamama/Strada/Zizzi. The floor plan looks familiar. Louisa.
  20. Why not just leave her be? She's causing no one any harm, what's the point in being nosey and questioning her posters? You don't have to look at them. Louisa.
  21. More information? Louisa.
  22. I went to Locale in Balham and really enjoyed myself, good food and service. The ED put me off because of its location and memories of what it used to be back in the 80s early 90s. Louisa.
  23. Mid-range, been done before in other ways. Could do better is my evaluation. 5/10. More interestingly blueeyes response was deeply lame, beyond lameness, unjustified and reckless. 1/10 - now go to the corner of the room, you're on detention. Louisa.
  24. Get nice hotel room in or around SW19 and watch it on a flat screen TV cos that's probably the closet you'll get. Anyone know of a rainbow with a leprechaun at the end of it waiting with a pot of gold? Oh right, thought not. :( Louisa.
  25. I adore abandoned buildings/cemeteries/victorian mental institution et al :) thanks for sharing fl0wer. If some forumites keep up the good work of scaring off chains and other businesses from setting up home around here we may have a whole host of abandoned shops to take photographs of, very exciting times ahead. Keep up the good work folks, soon enough we will look like every other failing high street up and down the land, camera at the ready! Louisa.
