Monster dogs tearing the sh!t out of each other in Nunhead
Louisa replied to northlondoner's topic in The Lounge
I agree Annette, the stagnation you refer to has become more apparent in the last 10 years or so. It's kept many of its traditional shops and old faces, but lots of the unique character of the place has disappeared and I don't for once put that down to any gentrification, because, I don't actually believe it has gentrified really. It's still staunchly working class overall, but there's this grubby feel about the place, it's almost as if the grottyness of parts of Peckham has transferred south and eastwards and despite increased house prices, because the area is sandwiched between gentrified ED and gentrifying Peckham and Brockley it almost feels lost. Monster dogs tearing the sh!t out of each other in Nunhead
Louisa replied to northlondoner's topic in The Lounge
All this talk of Nunhead being gentrified. I remember the place having a village feel years before any gentrification allegedly took place, and if I'm being honest it was actually a much nicer semi rural location and one of the best parts of Peckham even then. It's only in the last 10/15 years that the area has started to deteriorate, but fortunately many of the old shops which give it this villagey feel are still around. Lets hope it's changing for the better again with the close proximity of two overground lines. Louisa. -
Update on 549 lordship lane (Concrete House)
Louisa replied to bob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The house has an amazing history attached to it. To see it restored to its former glory after all these years of neglect leaves a warm glow inside me. Louisa. -
The main issue with Denmark Hill station is that the entrance is on a narrow and dangerous small side road with restricted space. Perhaps the much needed improvements will be lacking in a certain amount of sympathy to the existing Italiante architecture, but they are long overdue for such an important station for hospital access. Regardless of the aesthetics, they will give more people easy access to the station. The look of the place may not be to everyone's taste, but a more overriding issue for me is how dangerous this turning can be at peak times. Louisa.
-
What I'm saying is surely it would be better to have the station completed properly considering how important it is and the need for disabled ramps and lifts etc even if it means an overlap in costs and time rather than open it incomplete? Sometimes it's easy to moan about these things, but lets just let them get on with it, it's nearly done. Louisa.

Denmark Hill is a crucial station for connections to Kings, from all over London, so I'd like to know that any works carried out to such an important station are done properly with a bit of flexibility over costs and time over runs. Living on Barry Road, I am closer to PR station so I want to know when works will start here? Louisa.

Hi jane1 I'm sorry to hear about your experience since you went away on holiday. Are you seeking a private alternative to meals on wheels offered by southwark? I know of a few private firms one of which is Wiltshire Farm Foods. Might be worth visiting their website? www.wiltshirefarmfoods.com and they'll send out a free menu/brochure for you to look at prices. It's awful when the older generation are forced to suffer and have no alternative. You'd hope your mum would be in safe reliable hands whilst you are away and to come home to that is bang out of line. Louisa.

The bourgeoise aren't all bad of course, and as this lady refused to verbally exchange with me, and can't be sure what background she may or may not have, although I did note a bugaboo and some rather expensive sunglasses despite the rain - not that I'm one to jump to conclusions of course. Louisa.

The webcam idea is great. I confront negative behaviour on a daily basis, and this would provide me with a sort of 'street guardian angel' role in and around ED. I've never confronted these particular buggy path hoggers before, but they are unfortunately a drop in the ocean for me, particularly on Goose Green. However, I will not be rehashing the leaflet campaign on this occasion as to tell you the truth I just can't be a$$ed. Louisa.

Who would have thought the old Sainsburys car park in Peckham would turn into an arts hub. What next? Shall we turn the old ED police station into an ironic post modern nod to the dying working class culture of south-east London? Tate Light? Where have my digestives gone. Louisa.

I would imagine Jo Jo Maman B?b? had to close for a restock after these two had been in there. Louisa.

I agree, north of east dulwich road and sandwiched between ED and Peckham Rye stations. Notably, Adys, Keston, Amott, Gowlett, Ondine, Nutbrook, Oglander, Muschamp, Marsden, Bellenden. Louisa.

the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sorry if this is obvious but surely can't you just > say excuse me? Then they move you pass and > everyone is happy? It sounds obvious, but in reality it isn't always the best move. On this occasion, I was visible, I didn't say excuse me because I didn't want to make a fuss (at first) but she then tuts at me as I walk around them, she started the confrontation despite being in the wrong in the first place. This is what got my back up. Then when she is verbally confronted, she seems unable to comprehend why. Louisa.

I love newsagents. Especially street paper sellers. Louisa.

So I have a prejudice because someone was ignorant and refused to allow some space for me to use the path? Why has everything got to have am agenda? I just wanted to use the footpath! I agree that some people are inconsiderate, and it does boil down to the same thing, but to point the finger of blame at the person being afflicted isn't helpful. It just needs a change of tact from the people with not a shred of consideration for others, then we are all happy! Louisa.

If you look at the heat map on Zoopla, as Jeremy rightly points out, proximity to a train/overground station is key to a street being 'sought after'. But it obviously depends what the individual is looking for. I'm on Barry Road, it's a fair distance from public transport, busy with traffic and not ideal for some, but it works just fine for me. Overhill road again is a fair distance from trains, but reasonably quiet. If its easy transport links you're after the Zoopla map backs this theory and I'd say head towards the Bellenden area and northern end of Lordship Lane/Grove Vale ED/Peckham borders. Louisa.

Ann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Louisa, I remember the debate about Goose Green > daffodils but I don't remember any leaflets > posted! I posted a number of leaflets around, mostly on the larger trees close to the road so that people had a front line 'visual barrier' to make them think twice about abusing the poor flowers. I also had a confrontation with a number of would be daffodil abusers, which again contributed to the extended duration of their seasonal flowering. Buggies are ok, as long as the driver is able to be polite and not own the pavement. The whole car vs bicycle debate on another thread has a lot of parallels with the pedestrian environment too. Some buggy owners walk in twos along a pavement, forcing people out into the road or cornered behind a lamp post and forced to wait. My anger on goose green may seem a storm in a tea cup to some, but on a rainy day being forced off a path into saturated mud with bags ill of shopping without even an acknowledgment from the selfish people forcing you to make a diversion, is just not fair. Louisa.

They were about mid way across the green path and heading in the direction of the church but sort of facing one another and stopped slap bang in the middle of the path, gassing away. They could quite easily see people walking towards them I'm sure, from either direction and I was holding quite a lot of heavy shopping. I didn't feel it necessary to ask to please be able to use the path as I felt they could both see me. Maybe I should have thinking about it. But I am always so aware of other people in a shared public space and I wouldn't need prompting to move over. *Bob* I'm not sure of their background, but neither were prepared to apologise to me or even interact with me. But I put them straight. It only ever happens to me on Goose Green, and it nearly always involves a buggy. I don't wish to have a leaflet campaign again as I did with the infamous daffodil pickets a few years ago. Just a little consideration please. Louisa.
-
Just a little reminder that the path across goose green is for everyone's use and NOT JUST people with BUGGYS. I was carrying a few bags of shopping across the green earlier this afternoon and found myself behind two ladies who were so busy chatting to one another that they failed to see me walking towards them and was forced into slushy muddy grass whilst carrying FOUR BAGS. I shuffled past quickly and one of them tutted, so I turned round and advised them that the path was for everyone's use and not just specific people. She gave me a rather vague and slightly bemused look back and didnt say anything. Bit of consideration for others please - Goose Green public path is for everyone - not just YOU! Louisa.

Nothing beats Roskillys or Langage Farm ice cream from Devon/Cornwall. Any of these places sell them? Louisa.

I don't post as much these days, but I just wanted to say, I'd like to wish Eric and Margaret a very happy post-Le Moulin life, whatever and wherever they choose to go and do. One of the main things I feel pretty strongly about on this forum as many of you may know. Le Moulin was once a big part of my life, fabulous restaurant, fabulous people and I would be lying if I didn't say a tear was brought to my eye when they bowed out last night for the final time. A great loss to East Dulwich. Louisa.

Thanks for stating the obvious ianr. Louisa.

UncleBen, the line between hipster and tramp is a blurred one, which becomes more blurry by the day. Have a read of this article, it might put you straight on why they think street food is cool. http://www.buzzfeed.com/lukelewis/types-of-hipster-you-encounter-in-london Don't forget, it's un-cool to eat pie n mash, unless its eaten from a garbage disposal unit at the back of the shop (adds a sense of irony) Louisa.

Only if I get to be rude to the customers, then you've got yourself a deal Annette ;) Louisa.

It would, but perhaps we will have some sort of wood fired organic tacos aubergine street food stall open up at ?6-?12 a pop, that will keep the hipster brigade happy. :) Louisa.
