At least Sugar isnt a barbers shop with loads of people sitting or standing outside all day and night making the roundabout area seem untidy. I think the premises would have been better suited as a small HMV outlet or something along the music lines. At least the unit is now filled and looks attractive, all we need now is some decent christmas lights along the lane and maybe we will get a rush of outsiders coming to ED to do xmas shopping!

Good grief, will these ex-pat aussies and south africans go to any lengths to incinerate large pieces of meat on a bbq? Just because the suns out doesnt mean its 30c +!!!!!

lozzyloz, thankyou. Good to be back! I have relatives who moved abroad to get away from this country following service for our armed forces. An uncle of mine in Australia does not mark Remembrance celebrations despite being a deep sea diver who defused mines during the second world war. He remains rather bitter towards this country and the treatment he claims he and his family received in the post war years where he was forced to bring up a young family in a bedsit in the East End. People all have good reason for remembering or choosing to forget, and I think that is everyones individual right.

The wreath was beautiful... To see three wreaths at the memorial (usually just one most years) was a real treat, and it actually feels like the ED community is really making the effort to remember. I think this quiet memorial with a sense of faded glory is so much more dignified than the more grand village memorial.

I never conform at funerals and I think it would be ridiculous and stuffy to force people to reflect upon something if they do not want to for whatever reason. That is not democratic, and as pointed out already, the people who lost their lives in war were selflessly defending the freedoms we continue to enjoy today. I think it is up to the individual to decide whether it is worth remembering and commerorating the men and women who have lost their lives to defend our freedoms we enjoy... Maybe in our consumer society of waste and greed a lot of people simply are not aware or do not see the importance of remembering people from so long ago who died for a cause they do not fully understand, who knows.. I mark Remebrance Sunday in my own way, every year it is different.. but I always take the time out of my life to reflect.. I'd like to think others do the same..

PP I have not been on in a while had a few personal issues, but I am on here today to wish you well and thankj you so much for pursuing this great cause over the past 4 or 5 months. I would be very happy to come along tomorrow to observe the 2 minutes silence and watch the wreath laying. Also a big thankyou to John Allan flowers for your involvement and to everyone else on this forum. Regards, Louisa.

Scottish chippy is my favourite, but having said that I think most parts of the UK have better chippies than London and most of the south-east bar a few coastal counties.

PP I am very proud of what you have been able to achieve recently and I think that the restoration of this memorial will do two great thing sat once. The kids who have had a rough time themselves will be able to use history and the memory of those forgotten souls who fought and died on the battlefield, to reflect upon their own lives and where they went wrong, and perhaps will give them a sense of achievement in knowing that they have 'ressurected' the memory of a whole generation of local people who lets face it most of us had forgotten about. I still think the idea of a EDF reef made with real poppys presented to the memorial on the Remeberance Sunday would be a great tribute to this campaign and would help support PP's efforts in securing this grant. Any ideas? Source the reef from a local florist maybe?

Hiya everyone. The decision was made in those few hours Sean and I travelled up to a place called Swadlingcote (sp.?), which is in between Derby and Coalville in the East Midlands. The car was picked up by a local garage and the chappie towed it away for free. I received a phone call back today telling me that the problem was a cylinder had blown? He did explain in more detail but it just went in and out the other side. In short it will cost me ?365 all in inclusive of labor. Soon after the phone call I decided to go to the Ford Dealership in Bromley to see if I could get any deal on a part exchange once I get my Ka back. I was offered ?1600 for it if I bought a car the same day, so I walked away with a Ford Mondeo Estate. They tried to throw in the cleaning kit for 400 quid and I completely ignored him when he brought the topic up. Anyway, I hope i'm doing the right thing. I dont know. But thankyou so much everyone for your ideas on what the problem could be. Its been a horrible week for me and a costly experience today, but maybe things will start to go well from now on.

The problem is the mileage, it's currently sat at 75,348, and its a 1.3 engine, the new clutch was probably as a result of that. The boiling water tank was not a problem until last night when the red temperature gage came on and warned me of overheating, I filled the water up before I left and the oil was not unusually low, but the AA man seemed pretty sure it was the head gasket, although no smoke was coming from under the bonnet or from the exhaust. All I saw was steam and the focus of the problem was on the water tank, which was spitting the hot water out. If the engine has cooled overnight will I be able to drive it back do you think? I want to get it back to London but cant afford to brake down on the M1 as that could become very expensive.
-
Thanks guys for the advice. It's a Ford Ka from 2004, and I dont believe there was any smoke coming from the exhaust although the engine oil level was pretty low. I am considering going back up there and getting some quotes on repairing it, but because it is so far away and currently sat in a service station I feel as though I need to make decisions fast. I guess towing it back to London wouldnt have been a bad idea after all?

After an innocent two week holiday in Derby, I was on my way home last night when my car suddenly stopped. I got out on a cold and dark A-road to discover my water tank boiling away like a kettle. I called the AA out and the chap told me that my 'head gasket' had blown, and gave me just a few options (in all fairness it was well after midnight), the first being to get towed back to London at a cost of ?320, and then get it repaired down here - or to get a taxi home (cheaper!) and then head back up and get the thing scrapped because it was not worth spending large amounts of money on. I need advice and quick, I do not understand the first thing about cars, and this one is only 3 years old and recently had a brand new clutch fitted. Do I get a friend to drive me all the way back to the services at Derby and get the thing scrapped, or spend money on taking it to a garage up there and getting it fixed? HELP! PLEASE! :( A very tired Louisa..

Thats very sad news Mrs Y. A genuinely good quality traditional local business, born out of Peckham in the late 1800's and served south London for generations. I will be very sads to see it close it's final few deli's. :(

> ... its appropriateness and the > implications for local residents? Who and what decides whether something is appropriate or not for a particular area? What are the implications for residents? Ever thought of looking at other areas in and around the UK which have these drop-in centres local to them? -

Allfornun - the problem is that ednerd cant afford to live in Clapham, he/she is a wannabe Claphamite i'm afraid. They obviously cant handle being forced to live so close to Peckham and Camberwell, and feel they need to isolate ED as much as possible so that the real world does not get in. Lost cause i'm afraid. -

Firstly, i'm not your friend, let's set the record straight here. Secondly, I was making a point about your hypocritical views not the colour of your newspaper. I seriously hope your family are hit with addiciton one day, then maybe you will be forced to get off your high horse and pay attention. You are selfish if you think it's ok to have it elsewhere but not on your doorstep. You made a very bizarre link between justification for child abusers wife beaters and drug addiction earlier. How would you feel if a paedophile was moved out of ED and put in a community elsewhere where they reoffended? People like yourself do not fix the problem, you just move it around. You are more offensive than the offenders! -

You have Daily Mail written all over you ednerd. -
Good grief, Foxtons are sounding like the Mcdonalds or Tesco of the estate agent industry. But god they do have such an attractive shop fascia and lovely looking cafe area.

ednerd the whiter than white character who has never had any addiciton issues, should perhaps consider the future. Any current or potential offspring who may well be inclined to follow a certain path in later years, are they condemned to the same narrow minded attitude? I hope not. If the new service isnt offered in ED, where else will it go? I guess you dont care as long as it doesnt damage your "decent residential area". No one is suggesting it will offer us anything positive as a community, but equally there is no credible argument to suggest it will have a negative impact either. People like yourself who allow the tabloid press to dominate their minds are the ones who have the issue, not the greater informed ED community. -
I have no idea Sean he has not responded yet, but whilst we wait on his response, how about I ask you the same question, any negative visits to Chandelier to report?
-
John have you ever been asked to leave Chandelier for any reason?

I'd love to see marks and sparks open up on LL, but not in place of Iceland thats all. -
Usually with something long and containing batteries hidden in my knickers (especially after a snog with a hunk like domitianus) ;-)
-
Domitianus I am more than happy to partake in a bit of bigamy from time to time - especially with someone as fetching as yourself! Jump on board, there is plenty of room! btw.. is it me or is someone else saying something? Knew I should have left the Jacobs Creek alone tonight ;-)

Nero I was a nicotine addict for many years, and with an estimated 1/3 of the nation being smokers at some point in their lives, I think it's highly hypocritical for people to turn their back on and condemn drug abusers when they have probably had some sort of addiciton in their life too.
