Xmas presents for local children in poverty

Charter school East Dulwich opening date
James Barber replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Another proud achievement from my time in public office. The idea for this new secondary school was a campaign led by yours truly - after we'd solved the local primary school shortage. The land - after 25 years of NHS dithering - was only allocated after I made the first ever successful Right to Challenge how a public body , in this case the NHS, were not properly using public land. Special thanks to Caroline Pidgeon our local GLA Assembly Member and Nick Clegg the then Deputy Prime Minster who moved and shaked to help pull this together and Sir Francis Maude a Tory MP who at the time was the Cabinet Office Minister who took the decision making it possible to have our Charter East Dulwich or any school on the site. -
Hi SE22cat, You have no idea! Hi worldwide, Indeed. But not invite to the opening :o(

Very exciting. Something I started in 2005. Hugely delayed by the financial crash. Then construction cost inflation. Finally arriving. Hope everyone likes it. Twice floor space f current one. The new Grove Vale library lease is 125 years long on ?100 pa versus old lease of ?44,000 pa. So huge running cost savings allowing extra opening hours - always my vision

It has to consult.

I mentioned broken in the context of over loading GP's - whether part-time of fulltime - and the quantity of paperwork. We need many thounsnds more GP's. Not just because we need more, which we do, but also because GP's are also an aging population with many retiring and due to the overwork also many more seeking early retirement.
-
GP's I've spoken to who are partners owning their practice have horrible amounts of paperwork to complete to remain in business. One told me they go into the practice every Saturday at 5am to try keeping up to date with it. That they are unable to recruit doctors to become partners because of the cost, risk and hours involved. That they employ paid GP's and many only wish to work part-time - quite a range of hours depending upon the individual. The system is clearly broken and close to crisis.

Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
James Barber replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The operator has employed extra people who were originally going to enforce one-way operation. It lasted 30 minutes before they gave up. The answer is a temporary emergency entrance exit of off the new walkway/bridge so both are equally attractive. Emoloying a number of people to try enforcing a one-way system will distract the operator from a proper extra capacity solution. -
Lordship lane roadworks - closure 18-30 November
James Barber replied to annafb's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lots of highway resurfacing. This is a good thing but should be carried out in the school summer holidays - that's what I asked officers for when still a councillor. -
Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
James Barber replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I attended a meeting with lots of stakeholders venue provided by the Maudsley about Denmark Station Monday am. Huge thanks to Caroline Pidgeon GLA Assembly Member for making this meeting and the previous ones. Their are plans to open a new permanent second entrance/exit to Denmark Hill station. The timescales for a new permanent entrance would be 3-4 years. Grim. I suggested that the station is at crisis point and a temporary entrance should be installed urgently. Mood was this should happen. The quickest and cheapest temporary entrance would be to add it to Champion Park side with card readers, or Windsor Walk without, feeding with steps from the newer under used passenger bridge directly. I've attached a photo of one proposed permanent entrance. Some really strange thinking - seven options where some do not propose to make both footways equally attractive - shifting the blockages from the current older footway and staircase to the newer ones. Proposal to have a one way passenger route in and out of the station put in place over Xmas - I was a lone voice suggesting this was the wrong priority. -
New M & S to open this Thursday 15 November
James Barber replied to derwentgrove's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
During a site visit Spring this year the head of libraries told me the new Grove Vale library would open August/September this year. Not a great advert for Southwark Council working well. -
Taxis parked on Crystal Palace Road
James Barber replied to hooksan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If someone is conducting a business from the public highway then Southwark Council can intervene - proving a business is being operated and causing a public nuisance can be a problem though. If you think this is the case email me. -
You have to be 14 to volunteer in a Southwark Library - https://www.southwark.gov.uk/libraries/adults/volunteer-at-your-local-library Oxfam support DoE volunteering - https://www.oxfam.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer-with-us/duke-of-edinburgh and our nearest Oxfam shop is 9 Half Moon Lane. Good luck.

Brown bags and garden waste
James Barber replied to camberwell57's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi hpsaucey, That is clearly ridiculous. One of my Lib Dem colleagues Councillor Anood Al-Samerai has agreed ot ask why are council libraries rationing brown garden waste bags and when will they be able to order sufficient for all the demand. -
Planning Permission for the Silvester Rd Post Office
James Barber replied to RdeN's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The obvious position would be for as many a possible to object unless the scheme includes Post Office Delivery Office for people to collect parcels, etc that Royal Mail failed to successfully deliver. -
New Flats At ED Station - Be Warned! (it has a "veneer")
James Barber replied to Zak's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Nigello, New Grove Vale library will have twice the current floor space. Fixtures and fittings paid for by the developer. -
Hi Passiflora, solar, Southwark still has over 20,000 garages it rents out and their are lots of private garages to rent across the area. I'm genuinely baffled why parking cars in garages is considered more important than somewhere- however few - for people to live. Guess if people have somewhere live a garage would be their next priority. Hi Whoop, I can't make the consultation tonight - travelling home from meeting in Reading - but I will be looking at the final schemes and commenting. Barry Road changes - totally mindless council proposals that will pointlessly add danger for people walking and cycling, at great expense. Hi alice, And that was part of why I wanted to do more than just critics the council but positively some places they could build. The council isn't just bad at building it lies. It had council owned properties on Crebor Street since 1984 to house disabled people with live in carers. It moved the residents out. Left the property empty of tenants for several years. Then rented it out and declared they'd 'build' new council houses in 2017.

Hi pecksnff, You can see road works across London here - http://public.londonworks.gov.uk/roadworks/?x=Z11v1oqcDzF1MY77c012oA It is not a great website - overly sensitive map function. It shows on Jarvis Road 1 October to 2 November Southwark council plan to replace the pavement and build a raised table. it also shows 18-24 October Thames Water doing 6" mains and 5m of road being dug up.

Southwark provides public lavatory at thE Dulwich Leisure Centre, soon to be open new Grove Vale Library, Dulwich Library. Some boroughs run a scheme to encourage private businesses to open up their lavatories to non customers. We clearly could do with a couple of such facilities on Lordship Lane.

Hi Pugwash, apples, We have a critical shortage of housing, but we don't have a critical shortage of places to park cars locally. On that basis my priority is to house people over cars. I'm sorry if we have different priorities. Hopefully the final design will be in keeping with the area and not some appalling architecture.

Hi bagpipes, If people currently driving across from Grove Hill Road to Champion Hill wont. So they wont queue beside Dog kennel hill waiting for the green light. So Dog Kennel hill school should see a reduction in traffic idling besides their school. Traffic displacement. If the traffic is coming along Avondale Rise it would need to turn left and join Dog kennel hill via Quorn or Pytchley. Both would be serious delays meaning much traffic will evaporate from the area. If they turn down Camberwell Grove they'll be delayed by the filtered traffic lights and then going through Camberwell Grove. Again much traffic will evaporate if they decide that is the next best alternative. Minimal queue on Champion Park joining Denmark Hill currently. The loss of the through route E to W if it all went via via Champion Grove, the parallel A road would see that A road have less than 50% increase in traffic. I do live on champion Hill - but I think such measures should be widespread. I'd personally prefer them to be cameras enforced and limited to non Southwark residents. No Southwark residents should be on our A & B roads not our unclassified residential streets. And vice cress when I'm in a car in other boroughs. It could also then be trisected to the most approripaite times of day, etc.

Bassano Street Garage Redevelopment
James Barber replied to geh's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For clarity I proposed this site along with Henslowe Road garages. The homes are to be Southwark council homes and by 50% local let they mean people in housing need in the Dulwich are and the reminder for the general Southwark council housing waiting list. Their is no sinister plot here. I've not yet seen the detailed design but would hope it is in keeping with Create Streets guidelines to maximise how acceptable they could possible be - https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjcuPrhzY_eAhXLDMAKHfR7CccQFjAAegQIChAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ipsos.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fmigrations%2Fen-uk%2Ffiles%2FAssets%2FDocs%2FPolls%2Fhousing-home-types-survey-create-streets-slides.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3fFPZpRKR9qe8lZw08ULawThis leave one plot on Underhill road that the council has yet to bring plans forward for - where the 4 prefab homes were/are. -
This is one of the three sites I proposed several years ago. Really frustrating it has taken such a ridiculous amount of tie for Southwark Council to act. Thankfully they are at last. The devil will be in the detail and whether they go for a design that people want - https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjsx-zv0vfdAhVHAcAKHZzWCfYQFjAAegQICBAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ipsos.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fmigrations%2Fen-uk%2Ffiles%2FAssets%2FDocs%2FPolls%2Fhousing-home-types-survey-create-streets-slides.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3fFPZpRKR9qe8lZw08ULaw
