Charter school East Dulwich opening date
James Barber replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes. -
That would be great Rendel - thank you in advance.

You can report noise and antisocial behaviours -which surely what you've described is -https://www.southwark.gov.uk/noise-and-antisocial-behaviour/antisocial-and-threatening-behaviour 020 7525 5777 And yes, the whole of Southwark is in a Smoke Free Zone. I believe your neighbour can use an open fire IF they have smoke free coal.

All state funded schools in Southwark are academies and have been for many years. The only non academies in Southwark are private schools. Can we get back to focusing on finding loved but no longer used spare musical instruments that could be used to help teach local children the joy of making their own music. So far the following instruments have been donated: 2 x flutes 2 x violins 1 x french horn Which is a fab start...
-
Hi TE44, Their is clearly a demand outstripping the supply of instruments - a shortage. This is a generic issue for many schools and someone I've just collected a lovely flute from has pointed out this charity - https://www.orchestrasforall.org/donate-an-instrument/ - but perhaps not many can delivery them to this charity in north London in person or post them insured.

Thank you rendelharris. Hi TE44, Any costs in collecting or moving instruments are my own. I'm not charing anyone for this. It just seems a like a nice idea to make life super easy for people who are telling me they have wanted to pass their loved instruments on to a new home but didn't know how - which is exactly where I was until I made the connection. Why The Charter School East Dulwich - because I campaigned for this school, obtained the land and have a very big soft spot for it as a result. But I'd be delighted if anyone specified a different school they lie an instrument to go to locally and would make the effort to support their request. Would you like to help? Hi redeem, I'd forgotten about the library books. Donating books fab idea. Hopefully donating a book at Rye Books can be as a financial donation so people can Gift Aid the money and the school gets more books that way.

Yes Carrie I believe it would be. Hi TE44, Yes. I heard they had shortage of musical instrument. I offered and my donated french horn was warmly received. I offered to see if we could find more instruments for their local children. It recall how hard it was when I first started playing a musical instrument and the shortage of musical instruments which placed great pressure on our family to buy me an instrument. Anything to give others less pressure and more children chance to try learning an instrument is a good thing in my book. East Dulwich area must have many hundreds of forlorn instruments that could have a better home and be played.

Now: 1 x French horn 2 x Violins 1 x Flute

The Charter School East Dulwich is about to move onto its permanent site locally - so excited as started the campaign for new local secondary school December 2013. Apparently they have a shortage of musical instruments. I've donated a French horn. If you have a spare musical instruments that you no longer need or use and would like to know it's helping a young person learn that instrument please donate it to the new school?s music centre. I will arrange pick up so, if you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] or call 07900 227366 (email is better). So far we have: 1 x French horn 1 x Violin 1 x Flute

The two Charter Schools are close enough that they will likely form squished ovals meaning that each has a large catchment area than if only one existed. Without much better maths skills than I possess really hard to tell how far the new catchment areas will be but should be further than current and newer school even further as some aren't used or trusting yet. -
Change to restaurant old Londis

Hi shell, If a shop unit isn't let over time then the landlord is trying to get too much rent. Really simple economics. Often an owner will inflations the rent they ask for so that after two years they say it was unsettable as a shop. They then seek change of use from a shop to a more profitable use. IT too many do this then the high street loses its purpose and footfall declines killing it. 50% is super important threshold. -

Hi Monkey, Most of Dunstans Road is 1,300m from the new schools entrance. You are likely to get a place. Especially as it's settling down and some don't feel comfortable selecting it. They also have 180 places each year. Charter North Dulwich furthest distance place was 857m an established Outstanding school. -
Cafe is more a stand. Which means an extra pair of eyes always present which should mean longer opening hours. Coffeee stand should be complimentary to the library.

Another proud achievement from my time in public office. The idea for this new secondary school was a campaign led by yours truly - after we'd solved the local primary school shortage. The land - after 25 years of NHS dithering - was only allocated after I made the first ever successful Right to Challenge how a public body , in this case the NHS, were not properly using public land. Special thanks to Caroline Pidgeon our local GLA Assembly Member and Nick Clegg the then Deputy Prime Minster who moved and shaked to help pull this together and Sir Francis Maude a Tory MP who at the time was the Cabinet Office Minister who took the decision making it possible to have our Charter East Dulwich or any school on the site. -
Hi SE22cat, You have no idea! Hi worldwide, Indeed. But not invite to the opening :o(

Very exciting. Something I started in 2005. Hugely delayed by the financial crash. Then construction cost inflation. Finally arriving. Hope everyone likes it. Twice floor space f current one. The new Grove Vale library lease is 125 years long on ?100 pa versus old lease of ?44,000 pa. So huge running cost savings allowing extra opening hours - always my vision

It has to consult.

I mentioned broken in the context of over loading GP's - whether part-time of fulltime - and the quantity of paperwork. We need many thounsnds more GP's. Not just because we need more, which we do, but also because GP's are also an aging population with many retiring and due to the overwork also many more seeking early retirement.
-
GP's I've spoken to who are partners owning their practice have horrible amounts of paperwork to complete to remain in business. One told me they go into the practice every Saturday at 5am to try keeping up to date with it. That they are unable to recruit doctors to become partners because of the cost, risk and hours involved. That they employ paid GP's and many only wish to work part-time - quite a range of hours depending upon the individual. The system is clearly broken and close to crisis.

Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
James Barber replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The operator has employed extra people who were originally going to enforce one-way operation. It lasted 30 minutes before they gave up. The answer is a temporary emergency entrance exit of off the new walkway/bridge so both are equally attractive. Emoloying a number of people to try enforcing a one-way system will distract the operator from a proper extra capacity solution. -
Lordship lane roadworks - closure 18-30 November

Lots of highway resurfacing. This is a good thing but should be carried out in the school summer holidays - that's what I asked officers for when still a councillor. -
Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
James Barber replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I attended a meeting with lots of stakeholders venue provided by the Maudsley about Denmark Station Monday am. Huge thanks to Caroline Pidgeon GLA Assembly Member for making this meeting and the previous ones. Their are plans to open a new permanent second entrance/exit to Denmark Hill station. The timescales for a new permanent entrance would be 3-4 years. Grim. I suggested that the station is at crisis point and a temporary entrance should be installed urgently. Mood was this should happen. The quickest and cheapest temporary entrance would be to add it to Champion Park side with card readers, or Windsor Walk without, feeding with steps from the newer under used passenger bridge directly. I've attached a photo of one proposed permanent entrance. Some really strange thinking - seven options where some do not propose to make both footways equally attractive - shifting the blockages from the current older footway and staircase to the newer ones. Proposal to have a one way passenger route in and out of the station put in place over Xmas - I was a lone voice suggesting this was the wrong priority.
