Accident on Lordship Lane / East Dulwich Grove
James Barber replied to sophie_e_down's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi worldwiser, A three way signalled junction has been considered and modelled a number of times. It sounds so easy. But such a junction would need to remove all parking on Lordship Lane for 100m north and south to effectively create 2 lanes both ways. Effectively it would feel like a dual carriageay junction with commensurate higher speeds when green. The advice we received was that for any improved safety from controls from the lights would be countered by great speeds of traffic when green. NB. We also done a great deal to make this junction safer. But clearly we need to do more. Hi edhistory, When does that picture date from? Is it from before or after the entry treatment? Hi SE22cat, Many thanks for pointingo ut this other dangerous junction. -

If you ever hit another such road block to common sense then do try your local councillors direct. In this type of case we've met Thames Water managers and given contact details so we as councillors can escalate problems. To find your local councillor - http://local.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/index.jsp?LGSL=358&LGIL=8 or just for Southwark Council area - http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/mgFindMember.aspx?

Accident on Lordship Lane / East Dulwich Grove
James Barber replied to sophie_e_down's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The victim of this hit&run caled me earlier today - after 11 days in hospital she has been released but has a long period of recovery. I explained I've asked officers for a site meeting to discuss what can be done. Many, since this appalling crash, have highlighted this location as causing them fear. I also suspect that the renewal of the entry treatment has reduced it clarity. Even so we need to intervene more IMO at this junction to make it much safer. Please do email me any idea you may have to make things better. -
I've reported it.

Accident on Lordship Lane / East Dulwich Grove
James Barber replied to sophie_e_down's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lets hope no serious injuries. We've done lots on that junction. Added a signalled crossing there across Lordship Lane, had a full entry treatment added. Had East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane (Goose Green to Whateley Road) made 20mph. Collectively that is much more than ?200,000. We take pedestrian safety seriously. Hence why we organised a Living Streets (Pedestrian Association) report to be commissioning about Lordship Lane. -
St Francis park often closed Sunday mornings
James Barber replied to as9's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi as9, I will raise the matter. Hopefully it won't take long to fix as it is a legal agreement between saiansbrys and Southwark Council. -
Hi ZT, Yes that would be normal. A cabinet members decision can also be called in to Overview and Scurtiny Committee. But it would need a reason such as contrary to other policies, etc. Yes the report will be available at least a week in advance of the Dulwich Community Council. And I've just had confirmation that the DCC meeting will be held at Herne Hill Baptists Church, Half Moon Lane, SE24 9HU http://www.hernehillbaptistchurch.org/ Corner of Half Moon Lane with Winterbrook Road

East Dulwich Police ward panel update
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Nothing to stop people putting up signs or posters to encourage others. In East Dulwich you can get free property marking kits which do deter theft. I've just helped order 500 such kits and with a light work has been renegotiated to 610 new kits. Clubbing together for an additional non Yale style lock that isn't mortice but closes automatically. You could ask our local Police to udnertake a crime prevemtion visit and try and organise others to also be in at the same time to help drive the message home. Hopefully these ideas of some use. -
Hi ZT, The final decision for this will be taken by the Cabinet member/councillor with responsibility for Transport. I asked and it has been agreed the scheme will be presented at the 28 January Dulwich Community Council which can make recommendations which hopefully the cabinet councillor will follow. Why? Because this is the constitution for Southwark Council that the Labour party have passed. As an opposition councillor the constitution we have isn't the one I would wish for. But that debate is for another day.

More information provide at the following URL: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/4031/townley_road-_frequently_asked_questions Chris Mascord has confirmed that he is accepting email responses to the consultatino as long as they are clear they're formally responding to the consultation and state whether they are for or against. My guess is that without that clarity responses by email couldn't be incldued in the stats he'll be expected to produce for councillors.

Petition re Dulwich Hospital site
James Barber replied to samstopit's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi ed_Pete, The delay in NHS buildings going up is truly bizarre. We've tried pushing, we've organisation surveys. But NHS Property has to be one of the most backward public bodies going. It has been 22 years now of procastination. I fear they may be stalling into the 2015 elections and then start a new cycle of thinking, consultations, etc. I agree most of the hospital building would not be fit for purpose - and as single brick walls expensive to made fit for modern purposes. BUT the centra Chataeu has a large hall on the first floor and two wings. It would make a great focus for a new school and give it instant gravitas from day one. But we're a long way from detailed designs. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi jaywalker, The government grant is one aspect of the council budget but the council also raise council tax and charges fees. So the actual spending power won't reduce by that amount. Equally the council is unlikely to increase council tax and instead receives extra grant to encourage no council tax rise. With each new development the council also receives money from developers. So much that one local park friends group was asked if they wanted ?1M to spend. Each year the council has been adding ?5M into unallocated reserves. So not doing that would resolve most of this. Additionally the population of Southwark is rising and many services are a fixed cost but with more homes and council tax and central government spending with more people you can cover those costs more easily. For example the library service. Add a few percent of population every year and in real terms the cost per resident quickly goes down. a number of such services. Surprisingly with council budget cuts satisfaction with councils has been rising across the country. So although not something I'd want it isn't quite the bad news story it first appears. The bigger issue is that's as with 2010 it's clear in 2015 that whoever people vote for further cuts will come and over a number of years. When the economy was booming the prudent act would have been to reduce national debt but instead the then government went on a completely unsustainable spending spree. So we all have to help sort out that pickle and no one enjoys the hard choices that have been taking place for a number of years. Hope this answer helps allay your concerns. -
East Dulwich Police ward panel update

Sure, Henry_17. Slipped doors are yale type locks where either no deadlock present or not used. It is relatively easy to slip a door open when only a yale lock involved. Quite a few properties where a common front door to hallways but then seperate flats only have yale locks or residents don't bother using the deadlocks. -
Hi slarti B, I'm an oppiosition councillor. I disagree with the proposed scheme and think we can collectively do better. You've asked questions that as an opposition cllr I will end up being political but trying to keep neutral and get you answers: - why hasn't council actioned earlier recommendations for safety improvements. Two possiblities. Timescaels- getting money from TfL to pay for a scheme OR higher priorities with more risk being dealt with first OR they didn't have labour councillors in Village ward and it's a labour led council. - what is role of TFL in drawing up\evaluating the scheme - TfL are funding this and the 37 bus runs through this junction. So critical friend with the ultimate sanction. - has Council released all documents relating to this scheme, particularly the TfL application and the justification\rationale behind Option 7. I don't know. - what is status of Southwark Cyclists with council - campaigning group that offers ideas and suggestions. You'd be surprised at the howlers that they've helped persuade Southwark Council not to implement. My favourite was when I persuaded them to not install so much guard railing on Camberwell Road that you literally could not walk along it or cross the road for 1/2 mile. That was in 1999. - what is involvement of Southwark Cyclists in drawing up\ reviewing Option 7. As a councillor I'm no longer an active representative of Southwark Cyclsits. They will have seen the proposed scheme on the drawing board. They may have seen earlier versions. They will have critiqued it. They will have minimised their feedback. Too many asks has seen schemes shelved. The Southwark Cyclists involved are local residents as well.

Hi slartib, I should first say I'm an ex chairperson of Southwark Cyclists and still a member via the London Cycling Campaign. I'm not aware of any Southwark Planners Christmas party and certainly wasn't invited. Southwark Cyclists apparently now has over a 1,000 members living in Southwark. So it's a lot bigger than 4 people. I see no harm in sas Cycle Steering group having 4 cyclists as members - I think it's a shame they don't have a CTC member but that's different issue. Indeed it isn't a cross political party cycle steering group. One of the lessons from being a past Chair of Southwark Cycists is how fashion driven cycle facilities have been. An island is put in one year and several years later removed and then put back in. Wasting money all the time but giving the impression of action and progress. Partly by parties in power only being involved in making such decisions and not ensuring cross party support to ensure consistency over time. Suggested bad administration. Yes it could all be handled better. But most schemes don't prove contentious but are successful and if they had the level of administration suggested for this scheme they would all cost a lot more and we'd see a burgeoning council bureaucracy. Hi nunhead_man, I also doubt the 37 bus will be held up more but for different reasons. If TfL thought that likely they would object and they will have been consulted. When we were trying to get zebra crossings on Lordship Lane TfL insisted they be signal crossings to minimise impact on buses.

Anyone who uses this junction will know that the sheep pens aren't working with children walking and crossing around them. That others cross diagonally when the green pedestrian phase isn't long enough to do this. That cars turning right out of Townley Road conflict with cyclists going south and often those cars appear to jump the start of their red light phase. Southwark Council has a safety audit which says the junction isn't safe. TfL money has provided the money to upgrade this junction. The main angst is the proposal to ban the right turn. Hopefully everyone has responded to the consultation so their views can be collated. Please do also put 7-9pm 28 January in your diaries to attend the Dulwich Community Council where this scheme will be debated and questions can be asked.
