  1. HRA is largely a good thing. Don't believe the tabs. I'd get rid of whatever law it is that requires schools to have an element of religious service and education.
  2. I ran past the new school this morning. Looks rather nice!
  3. Penguin68, DaveR Good posts and entirely right. The anti-academies site is very misleading on many levels: so requirement to have a sponsor, "privatisation" (academies are charitable trusts). Most telling as you point out is the membership of the "alliance". Anything with the whiff of the SWP about it should be ignored.
  4. Dirtybox No. Alsatians are far worse than staffs. The increase in problems with bull breeds is caused by an explosion a desire to own one among people who are idiots and shouldn't own a dog. If you go visit Battersea Dogs' home about 90% of the dogs in there are "status dogs". Five years ago it was the minority.
  5. "kids have decided to try out the new equipment.... dregs of society" Bit harsh!

    Ruskin Park

Ruskin's fantastic. Brockwell and Sydenham Hills aside, best park in the area. And best playground this side of Telegraph Hill. They even land helicopters on it.
  7. I'm a little dubious about the no impact on cyclist finding. Seems counterintuitive. But then I've never had a run in with a motrcylist yet in a bus lane, so perhaps it's right. One alternative I'd wonderd about was whether motorcylclists might be restricted to the outer half of the lane only.

    Mice

Traps. Lots of them, with regularly changed bait and positioning. The longer a mouse survives, the cleverer the swine becomes. You have to get them early and be ruthless. Wherever there is pooh, stick a trap. Poison can be used too, but it won't work on its own. Head squashing traps are your infantry: they will retake and secure your territory from the vermin menace. And once they've gone, keep the traps in position as a defensive line for future attacks. Revel in your kills like a latter day Hemingway. Keep a tab, mark them up on your fridge door.
  9. Edwardes do good deals and I think their customer service is pretty good these days (I've found Brixton Cycles rather stuck up in the past). You should be able to pick up a hybrid (eg a Kona) for ?350, particulrly if it's last year's model and they're trying to clear. They have a huge choice. biggest in the area by far. Second hand bikes are overprIced in London in my experience (although you could try Bob's Bikes on John Ruskin Street, just up from Edwardes).
  10. Cate I'm sure you meant well, but: a) The Jewish vote thing is simplistic. American Jews overwhelmingly support the democrats, so how would that explain GWB's strong support for Israel? There is a large level of affinity with Israel in the US it's true, but this goes beyond ethnic or religious differences. b) "obstinate and stubborn" a "national trait"! Very thin ice indeed. Might you reconsider?
  11. Hanoi Rocks: Finnish poodle rockers. My mate's sister was their groupie briefly.
  12. Heavy makes me happy and Metal makes me mean. But I think ACDC have been very average since Bon Scott snuffed it. Whole Lotta Rosie their best. Now Motorhead, there's a band.
  13. "Fruit Smelling Balls" was a highlight.
  14. So this first and only post from Green Ranger is a rather odd and spurious rant about the lib dems and deforestation! And it's supported just over an hour later by a poster whose only posts hitherto on this forum are on an equally odd lib dems knocking thread. Poor show!
  15. It is so depressing that the state funds a school with entrance criteria like that.
  16. If the issue is a local one (so eg Melbourne Grove GPs) then you can legitimately expect a quicker reply than if the issue is one where the MP needs to write to the Minister concerned for a response (eg Digital Economy).
  17. This is the business of the PCT presumably; not really much to do with the Labour Party/Government?
  18. She was in Camberwell a couple of weeks ago. Just moved in to no 16, no heat, small child, ?10 for the key. I told her to bog off, having been scammed by a similar person in Hackney a decade ago. An impressive performance.
  19. "Why are all the alternatives on that Camberwell Community Cinema site associated with art, selling art, performing art or chatting about art over an arty latte" They're not. If you follow Eusebiovic's link you'll read the following: "This is what we are looking for. Camberwell is an area of London full of talent and desire to have something to be proud of. If this building falls into private hands and is not accessible to the community. As well as the above it could be all of the following: A place with accessible exhibition space Mixed use for performing arts / opera / theatre / dance / performance / poetry A cultural hub A space for retail arts and crafts It could provide a permanent base and shop front for several community organisations like the SE5 Forum or the Camberwell Arts Festival. There would be enormous potential for running educational programmes through the facilities. I'd even bet the library could be transferred and shops freed up on Camberwell Church Street. What do you want it to be?" Just ideas, Bizzy, to make it a space everyone can be part of and enjoy; and not one that houses a religious sect.
  20. Eusebiovic You'd have got a more engaged response had you asked about dog pooh or whether Lordship Lane needs a sushi restaurant. Best of luck with the campaign.
  21. But Camberwell's lovely. Nicest houses in the area. An art college. Good pubs. History. A MacDonalds. What is there not to like.
  22. It's very good. The Kindergarten is excellent.
  23. Thinking laterally, if the pothole was repaired recently, then there should be a record of this at LB Southwark (or if an A road TFL?). A freedom of Information request should therefore be able to pin down when the repair was made and would de facto show the pothole had existed at the time you had your accident.
  24. And Rhedd, you should declare your pecuniary interest in this issue.
