I think they run a train service from East Dulwich to London Bridge nowadays....

Thanks Dan, That's really informative, and happy to accept your first-hand account.

Give up what car? She is an opposition back-bencher - does she get a car provided for her?

Rockets - what is meant by deposition in this context? You use it quite a lot and I'm genuinely not sure what you mean by it. I Googled it and could mainly find definitions of the legal term - I think that's something different, or to depose a monarch, and there is a geological meaning... Is it just the same as 'disagree with my point of view - and I'm uncomfortable with that'?

Is local CLP very left-wing? I'm not saying it isn't, genuinely interested to know. How would that be measured/judged?

Southwark Council's services
DuncanW replied to Harmlessmischief's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You might be aware already that you can report dogs' mess to the council via their website. It's easy to do, takes no more than a couple of minutes, and they come within 48 hours to remove it. It's worth doing as it gets the mess cleared, and in my mind, the more resource the council have to allocate to clearing up other people's mess, the more likely they are to lean towards stronger enforcement. -
And I would assume that the availability of parking spaces also increases as one heads south as the houses/frontages are bigger and generally less multi-occupancy dwellings... and as you get further out towards and into LB Bromley more dwellings with their own off-street parking.
-
Agree that parking is an issue. I'm not sure that 'every' household has two cars though, or anything like that; 46% of London households do not own a car at all. https://content.tfl.gov.uk/technical-note-12-how-many-cars-are-there-in-london.pdf The population of London has risen significantly c15% over the last decade or so which obviously links to more cars on the road, even though car-ownership per capita has reduced during the same period. So, how do we ameliorate the problem? I guess we could build some more multi-story car parks... or we could work out ways to reduce unnecessary car use and ownership, but that's not always popular..

"Does anyone live on Dunstans Road who can set up a Whatsapp?" That might be a good idea if you are otherwise looking to limit the conversation on an existing thread to a specific topic separate from the OP

I think the convention is that street names do not include apostrophes. I don't think it's a hard and fast rule in this area, although I believe some local/regional councils do actually forbid their use.

How we get to that point, plus the efficacy, costs and externalities, etc of the efforts to date are all up for discussion of course.

A little too close for comfort: 2 arrests after submachine gun found in car
DuncanW replied to IlonaM's topic in The Lounge
Crossthwaite is not exactly on the route between Croydon and Lewisham, nor any two place not on that estate... so you might wonder if they didn't have some business there, or very close by. ianr Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The two arrested and charged men are reported as > having addresses in Croydon and Greenwich. > https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/camberwell-tw > o-men-charged-after-machine-gun-found-hidden-in-ca > r-speakers/ -
And on the corner of Peckham Rye and EDR by the new kid-friendly cafe. E-Scooters aren't ideal in many ways, but I think they are here to stay - although hopefully not in the parks where kids should be able to play without the fear of being hit by a motorised vehicle.

Price of a pint of Beer in the Lane

I saw that study too. I recall it also went on to assert that 100% of those fights involved individuals either already holding, or with ready access to a pool cue. I'm not sure it's within Sadiq Khan's gift to not make the cuts. There is a huge cash shortfall caused by reduction in travel due to the pandemic. He is looking for a bail-out from central govt so as not to have to make the cuts, and is spelling out what the services will look like if that money is not forthcoming.

"The Mayor was hoping for a continued influx of polluting vehicles" Cripes - that's quite a statement!!

I'm not sure how you're able to assert that the 2018 Lewisham result was a protest vote. Like so much of this thread, that seems like a flight-of-fancy to me, but if I have missed some underlying data that points to that, please feel free to share. Lewisham has long been a Labour stronghold. They went into the 2018 election holding 53/54 seats and gained one seat to take a clean sweep. They won that seat from the Greens, not Tory or LibDem. Annoying words that have cropped up in our language
DuncanW replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
You had better have a word with Otis Redding then. -
Heartblock - fair enough. The phrase did appear in your post but I must have misunderstood what you meant by it.

Here we go again - Southwark is not, by any definition, either a one-party state or a dictatorship. It's a Labour stronghold because people keep voting for them. That hasn't always been the case - not that long ago it was a Lib Dem/Tory coalition for a short while. And with local elections just around the corner, if the electorate of Southwark arent happy with them, they will vote them out. Let's see what happens in May. heartblock Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 'It's so funny - every time someone brings up a > solution that would cut traffic - people shout > 'dictatorship' yet closing roads to car drivers on > some roads but allowing people from closed roads > to drive one of their many cars on a school road > without consultation of any of the roads impacted > with extra diverted traffic is not a > 'dictatorship'. JAGS and Alleyns don't have no-drive policies. They encourage, but that's within a context of openly attracting pupils from a wide catchment area. They run school buses but clearly there are many that choose to drive. And I agree that the behaviour of some of those is pretty poor in the way you describe. The nursery won't be operating with the same wide catchment as has been discussed before. And as a new enterprise, could take a tougher approach with their new customers; eg they would have the home address and could have agreement on an acceptable travel plan before accepting new joiners. There's nowhere to park near there anyway.

Would be doing well to get up the Lake District and back for the weekend, I'd say
