Dulwich is not big, but if you?re going to be looking for work in central London you?ll want to think carefully about location because we do not have a Tube station and transport is ok, not brilliant. Some places are well served but others will require a longer commute. Check your accommodation address against a map with rail stations and bus stops on it. If you?re wanting to work within a 3-5km radius, cycling and buses will probably be ok.

Energy spent here could be better spent speaking (not emailing) the heads of all local schools to ask just what they do to support non-private vehicular transport to schools, pupils and staff. I?ve no irons in the fire (no car, no kids) other than living very close to a school, and I?ve done exactly this already. The least heads can do is keep pushing home the need to lower the number of car journeys associated with their school. Give it a try!

I?ve complained about lack of working machines and long queues in both countries and got civil replies (but not ones that changed anything, but at least I tried)!

I saw a small group of LTTs feeding on seed/suet in holders in the spring. Hopefully they?ll return. Mostly it?s house and tree sparrows since summer but I saw a blue titbit on a feeder last week.

I was replying to the OP. 🤷♂️

Does English exceptionalism also encompass complaining on forums unlikely to be seen by the offender about actions/non-actions after the event instead of there and then? I?d say yes. Even reporting it to the offender a day or so later would help.

I asked a cafe to put up signs reminding takeaway customers that face coverings were compulsory, which it did a day or so afterwards. If there?s a place not doing their utmost to remind patrons what they?re obliged to do, please ask it to put it right. The cafe manager was understanding and had already put in other measures so I?ll continue going there.

The person in charge has seen the thread and says the council is committed to planting trees on Champion Hill, and that the grass verges (I think this means the sidings) are not suitable for such planting. I replied, asking them to consider the chance of accidents especially amongst those with disabilities, pointing out the council?s obligation to take any rules or regulations in mind. I?m all for trees but don?t think these will be in the right place.

Trees were never in the centre of most footpaths, this one included. I?ll ask the Southwark trees bloke what?s happening. Trees are good, but not here, I think.
-
I saw about four squares with the word ?tree? inside spray painted on the footpath from DH station to the main road. It?s not a very wide pavement (but about 25% wider than, say, the footpaths in residential streets in SE22, eg CP Road) so is this a good idea, given the large footfall generally and peak hour crowds?

Believe me, Peckham will never be like HK. I know both places well. A twin tower of some 15-20 storeys does not make the area into the skyscraper forest that is HK. Peckham, like its neighbours, is no where near as beautiful, safe, inspiring, better managed or civic-minded as HK. Maybe if Peckham (and Camberwell and ED) became more densely populated it would force folk to be more mindful of each other. London isn?t anywhere near as courteous and humane as HK. If only it were. I don?t condone cheek-by-jowl living or towering blocks at all, but space is a premium in London. If you want good sized flats (not the small ones that developers now offer as standard) then building up could help achieve that.

People need houses more than trendy bars. Tastes change. You can?t stop the provision of housing because some people (many from outside the borough/area) like to have an overpriced Aperol spritz with view a for a few months of the year. (I?m thinking that some object to the towers because it would spoil the view from Frank?s. If I?m wrong, ignore this!) Towers of a certain height help stop sprawl. I agree that the palm trees are naff and not good for helping shade, absorbing of rain and pollution and encouraging wildlife. Deciduous native trees are best.

Please, whatever it may become, not another caf?. It?s unnecessary and clich?d. A centre used as a nature reserve or educational facility would be of use to children and adults. Sport is ok but it?s always a minority of the whole population that plays it, and when you split it into tennis/bowls/etc. it becomes even more niche.

Caravaggio! BNG - which part of Barry was it? I?m expecting it to be near the Rye. I?d love to see a bird of prey here.

Just be polite and use short sentences ? Please wear a face covering because it?s compulsory. It?s for everyone?s benefit. I?ve asked three people on buses to do so and all complied. One was unmasked due to his talking on the phone during which he said he worked at a hospital! If you?re fave caf? or shop isn?t being serious about the rules, talk to the owner, manager etc. It?s a bit awkward for some people but awkwardness isn?t a vaccine against Covid.

e-Scooter parking at North Dulwich station?!
Nigello replied to Dulwich_Dad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The trials are for hireable ones so people?s details will be traceable and insurance is provided by the hire firm. It stresses they?re to be used on roads only. This is sensible. Where you can use a trial e-scooter You may use a trial e-scooter on the road (except motorways) and in cycle lanes. You must not use an e-scooter on the pavement. -
e-Scooter parking at North Dulwich station?!
Nigello replied to Dulwich_Dad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you have to travel on the pavement, and I can see that is safer than being on the road most of the time, give way to pedestrians and give warning that you are approaching. I?ve had scooters come up behind me I had no idea were there until they passed me. A bicycle bell or shout out Excuse Me / Good Morning (probably a bell in London!) with time for the pedestrian to stand to one side if needed before you get to them will make it safer and more pleasant for all. Nice sentiment but rather too Enid Blyton for my reality. Pavements are for pedestrians and wheelchair users. Why add to some people?s sense of unease by allowing (by virtue of not ticketing) illegal use of machines that can go much faster than the average pedestrian/wheelchair user? If you?re barrelling along a pavement with no helmet and no way of others identifying you it?s unlikely you?ll chirrup a jolly hello or ring a tinkly bell to announce your presence. -

e-Scooter parking at North Dulwich station?!
Nigello replied to Dulwich_Dad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
They?re not yet legal on road or pavement. I think they?re a good idea in theory ? keeping the number of vehicles down and reducing pressure on public transport - but need to be policed. I?ve seen people waving in and out of traffic on roads and footpath and felt unsafe for the rider and those nearby. Accidents can happen and they have effects on not just the rider and the injured but their loved ones. Insurance is needed for all riders because they can go at a fair lick. -
safest masks to protect ourselves against covid??
Nigello replied to TwinkleToes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/26/non-woven-masks-better-to-stop-covid-19-says-japanese-supercomputer Remember that masks help, especially these, but all face coverings don?t magic the virus away completely. Staying away from others and washing hands (or never ever putting fingers to mouth, eyes, nostrils, ear holes) would work most effectively. Wash your face covering or mask (woven ? cotton, linen, etc.) and dispose effectively and safe,6 of the non-woven ones after a day?s use. Being in a closed, poorly ventilated space at close quarters with others, all or mostly unmasked, is a good way of increasing your chance of getting infected. I?m not a medic so I?m using common sense and the knowledge I have. -
Maybe too many drivers take too many trips that could be walked or cycled? Maybe too many people get up too late to accommodate breakfast, school bag packing and the ?school run?? Maybe too many people think common sense is for others? 🤨

Contact your councillor with details and/or report it 020 7525 2000. It?s a nuisance and sometimes dangerous and much more so if you?re visually impaired or can?t move easily out of the way (like if you use a frame or wheelchair and the branches take up lots of space on the footpath). I think councillors should be alert to this problem as they go about their business and work on clearing up the problem.

https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/UKSOUTHWARK/bulletins/29be9fd Whilst numbers are still low, there have been 49 new cases in Southwark in the last seven days. The number of new cases has nearly doubled in Southwark in the last week and numbers are rising across London. A high proportion of new cases are for people aged 18?34. We also know that most transmission is still amongst family and friends.
-
Why remove them? I?d have thought it best to let nature do its thing, unless there?s a suspicion of disease or poising gets in which cases they could be tested. Nature is messy as well as pretty.

Overcrowding at Memsaab Lordship Lane
Nigello replied to Friernlocal's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The onus is on the business owner to follow the rules. It is not optional. It is not for the customer to ?take a chance?. If is impossible to remove all hazards vis-?-vis coronavirus transmission but sticking to physical distancing rules, etc. is a help and restaurants, shops etc. must comply with the regulations.
