  1. have you seen how many empty properties there are along Lordship Lane now ? You argue that a closed route (MG) has businesses that are badly affected. You also argue that the main roads, like LL, are busier because of the closures, yet on such an extra-busy LL, businesses are closing. Please show your working out.
  2. Could you imagine a seamless and efficient UK-wide bus/train/metro/coach/ferry system with a nationwide Oyster/touch payment system? If any party said it would do that (and their pledge looked workable) it?d get my vote...
  3. The area that was mostly olive green (lower) two days ago has now gone fully sea blue (higher). It covers much of ED and up to Horniman area, roughly. https://coronavirus-staging.data.gov.uk/details/interactive-map#main-content
  4. This article which quotes a study suggests ventilation is a good way of reducing the chance of infection. If you?ve got children at school I?d suggest asking the headteacher about opening (and keeping open) windows, even if it?s chilly. I?ve not seen any windows open at a couple of schools I?ve passed today. I know fewer pupils are there as it?s the holidays but it?s still valid to want to reduce the chance of catching or passing on Covid (and flu, etc.). https://english.elpais.com/society/2020-10-28/a-room-a-bar-and-a-class-how-the-coronavirus-is-spread-through-the-air.html
  5. Such a view further supports my view that because cycling is deemed to require very visible infrastructure it registers much more in people?s minds than walking/wheelchairing. How do the authorities promote walking and pedestrian rights as successfully as they do cycling? Do they need to?
  6. I agree that mid-long distance cycle journeys are prioritised with special lanes, lights etc. (Shorter journeys on cycles will of course benefit from such infrastructure) and walking or wheelchair use for shorter journeys isn?t promoted because maybe the powers that be can?t demonstrate they?re doing good for pedestrians because, well, what needs to be done to promote and facilitate walking? There?s no road to paint or lights to install because the general road furniture (lampposts and traffic lights, zebras, etc.) is there already, mostly. So, walking is just assumed to be a default option needing little support. What to do? Pedestrian rights just doesn?t have the same ring as cyclists? rights.
  7. It?s on Melon Road (which starts opposite the Burger King). I used it and was impressed. I got an appointment easily via the website and was done and dusted within five minutes, having booked at 6am and arrived at opening time, 8am. https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/new-covid-centre-peckham-pulse/ This contains the link and phone number needed. Take a mask, ID and the QR code on your phone or printed out. I didn?t have to show photo ID even though the booking process said to. Alcohol gel is available and you?ve to use it as you leave and arrive.
  8. This new government map showing Covid cases is interesting. Parts of SE22 are lower than others in terms of recoded positive cases. Just tap in a full postcode. https://coronavirus-staging.data.gov.uk/details/interactive-map
  9. Legal - the Goodrich closure at Dunstan?s won?t go ahead, according to the council official who wrote to me. That?s despite the fact it?s right next to a school and next to a narrowed section of the road ? the other contested road closures have neither features yet were pushed through. Originally there said a closure at Dunstan?s and Upland, which was OTT.
  10. Who are ?we?? Most folk don?t care about local politics and rarely vote in local elections. If they do they sometimes use their vote to send a message to the national government. 🤷‍♂️
  11. Please write to them if you?re in favour of the closures (partly/fully) so they don?t just get the wrong idea that a highly vocal and overlapping group of people with multiple axes to grind are necessarily the majority.
  12. Mayors are not powerful enough to make any real impact. They?re another layer of administration. Why not get rid of devolved government/larger councils and give local power to local people across the UK? Powerful city/conurbation mayors could effect better change if given the powers in the right context. Khan isn?t impressive but neither was Johnson.
  13. Visors are not a good alternative to a mask. Virus particles (along with snot, saliva, etc.) go down. Don?t rely on one to protect yourself or others.
  14. Southwark is considering making it a commitment to reduce car use in the borough by 50% by 2025. So to get there they have to make using a car as painful as possible. In this context you can see why they are doing what they are doing. 👏
  15. It?s very overcrowded and those stairs/passages are like something from a sixties Soviet film. The exterior is lovely and I?m glad it?s been revamped to an extent but the immediate environs are dystopic ? makes me think of Quatermass and the Pit. It?s doubly bad if you?re disabled, infirm, with kids or dogs. I hope it?ll chsnge for the better soon.

    eco tips

All useful and good for the halo but not likely to stop climate change, even if made compulsory and everyone were compliant. Let?s not forget that as we (rightly) reuse our teabags and switch off the lights.
  17. This bit of Goodrich is different. It was narrowed by half FOR SAFETY years and years ago. Since then traffic has grown and the lorries are heavier, more frequent and more likely to come down not knowing IT?S HALF WIDTH. How?s that for SAFETY? Also, the school told the council it didn?t have the resources to manage a barrier, which I think is fair enough. Anyway, it?s in someone else?s hands now higher up than council level. Watch this space!
  18. Then you know how it is to experience congestion and house shaking due to narrowing of a road for safety. This narrowed section is and never has been suitable for the Waze and GPS-led huge lorries.
  19. James ? no school street for Goodrich despite the assertion it would be shut off (permeable) at Dunstan?s. The other roads that attract complaints are normal sized roads away from schools (certainly not on which schools are actually situated), not narrowed to 2m which is what Goodrich is near to Dunstan?s. Result ? jams, aggro and large (8 wheel) lorries squeezing past a narrowed section that doesn?t appear on TomTom, etc. as such. It?s not realistic. Can you help?

Any crumbs, stale cake, fat from meat can be chopped and fed to the birds. Boil a kettle only with enough water for your needs. Bicarbonate of soda washed down the plughole with lemon juice then boiling water will clean your pipes. Lemon juice is good as a dishwasher rinse. Turn down your heating. Freeze leftovers. All are worthy of doing (and I do do them) and there lots more but to have a real impact, stop having more than one child, eat and consume less and drive less. It?s simple but not easy and most folk will prefer to ignore the difficult stuff.
  21. At least the Daily Mail is an ally: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8859841/The-death-driving-1-000-cuts-parking-spaces-quietly-replaced-Parklets.html
  22. I think it would be reasonable to charge most Freedom pass holders a small amount each year if the alternative is having no free pass. ?20-30? Those on pension credit or who have another marker for reduced means wouldn?t pay. Likewise, how about a ?10-15 charge for young people, waived if parents are in receipt of certain amount of benefits. It?d be better if it were not chargeable but times are harder than usual.
  23. Several months ago one cafe with outside seating (I?ve forgotten) told me there were no pots of tea because of the pandemic, so I didn?t buy. A teabag in a 250ml cup with no chance of a top up of hot water for ?2 didn?t seem appealing. It?s understandable right at the start of all this when people were even putting the mail in the microwave but not now. Takeaway, of course, needs paper cups but again, nobody is forcing anyone to buy.
  24. He?s fixer my dishwasher once and washer. The first time it was a trapped lemon pip so I was glad he told me about it, thereby stopping me from needing other call outs, and depriving him of cash. Very fair
  25. Keep the rivet underground. Like it or not, a small minority of residents and visitors are actively hostile to beauty and nature, as can be witnessed with the litter and BBQ burning we have (the latter in summer only, granted). A made-to-resurface babbling brook sounds pretty (but a bit Marie Antoinette to me) though it?s bound to get abused.
